The Hoenn region can almost be split into two parts. The big area to the West, which houses the first give gyms, and the smaller area + ocean to the East which is home to the remaining 3. After beating Norman, you get access to Surf, allowing you to finally head east. It's pretty clear by the vegetation that this area of Hoenn is more tropical, with big trees, rivers, etc. There's a route with permanent rainfall, really simulating the tropical nature of eastern Hoenn.

Once you make it past this long route, you arrive in a small village hidden in the trees, Fortree City. It's here that you'll find that coveted 6th badge, guarded by Fortree City Gym Leader Winona, the flying type expert. I would think the woods isn't the ideal spot to fly around, but I digress.

Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire

Winona can be challenged after the player obtains the Devon's Scope and removes the hidden Kecleon in front of the gym. She's another gym leader that just stands on her mat until some kid walks in the door. To be fair to her, there was a Kecleon blocking the path so she couldn't exactly leave either. Then again, she literally uses flying Pokemon and can leave that way.

Anyway, in battle Winona uses 4 Pokemon. She leads with a Swellow, the regional bird Pokemon of Hoenn and evolution of Taillow. She also uses a Pelipper, a newly introduced Water/Flying type, and a Skarmory. For the longest time I thought Skarmory was a Hoenn Pokemon as well. It's featured a lot in the region, while it was never really seen in Johto. Her first three Pokemon aren't too scary. Her signature Pokemon, however, can be terrifying. Altaria is a Dragon/Flying Pokemon from Hoenn. Dragons are always threatening, but this one in particular can destroy you if you're not careful. It knows the powerful setup move Dragon Dance, giving itself an Attack and Speed raise every time it uses it. It knows the Flying move Aerial Ace to deal damage. Thought you could use an Electric, Rock, or Steel type Pokemon to counter it? Wrong. Her last move is Earthquake. Yes, you read that right. Of all gym leaders to use this move, it's the Flying type one that does. Flying + Ground is unstoppable coverage, so you need to deal with this thing quickly.

In Emerald, she ditches Swellow and instead uses a Swablu (pre-evolution of Altaria) and a Tropius. Tropius is a Grass/Flying type that tries to set up the Sun and hit you with Solar Beams.

Beating Winona grants players the Feather Badge.

Also in Emerald, Winona can be rematched at various points in the game. Her team will gradually get stronger, eventually becoming a full team of 6. She has gym Pokemon minus Swablu, and adds a Noctowl and a Dragonite. Not an easy fight!

Pokemon Black 2, White 2

Winona returns alongside her fellow Hoenn leaders for the Pokemon World Tournament. She can be fought in the Hoenn Leaders and Type Expert challenges, as well as the Legendary Challenge!

In the first two, she uses her entire gym team, on top of some additions such as Honchkrow, Gyarados, and Sigilyph.

In the legendary challenge, Winona is the proud owner of the ultimate Flying type Pokemon: Pidgey!!! I meant Rayquaza, oops. Yes, she uses the Legendary Pokemon on the box art of Emerald. That's kind of insane.

---

Winona is a fairly uninteresting character. She is very reserved, only really being interested in Pokemon battles and flying. She adds nothing to the story and really only is notable due to her infamous Altaria, which is a known threat to experienced players. At least her outfit is cool!

I do hope eventually she might get some interesting backstory, but I think that ship has sailed, or plane has taken off, for Winona.
