In other posts I have talked a lot about category 5 hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin and for good reason. Category 5 hurricanes are nature's most powerful storm. Melissa as I stated in an earlier post made history yesterday as it was a category 5 hurricane at landfall. A lot of Atlantic Category 5 hurricanes have made landfall. However, a lot of them made landfall at other categories. Several of them still being major hurricanes categories 3, and 5. Some have made landfall at category 5 strength. In this post I'm dedicating this post to the category 5 hurricanes that made landfall at category 5 strength. I will be focusing on category 5 hurricanes in the modern era 1950-Present. I will also being referencing hurricanes before the modern era in a separate category. Category 5 Hurricanes that made landfall at Category 5 intensity 1950-Present. 2025's Hurricane Melissa- As stated Melissa made landfall as a category 5 hurricane with a pressure of 892 millibars and winds up to 185 mph. Damage is unknown at this time but what is known is the damage is severe as several towns have been decimated 2019's Hurricane Dorian- Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas as a category 5 hurricane with winds up to 185 mph which was the storm's peak. In the Bahamas Dorian killed 80 people and caused $4 Billion in damages. Dorian would make another landfall in North Carolina but as a category 2 hurricane. 2018's Hurricane Michael- Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle as a category 5 hurricane with winds up to 160 mph, which was the storm's peak. Michael killed 74 people and caused $26 Billion in damages. 2017's Hurricane Maria- Maria made landfall in the country of Dominica as a 170 mph category 5 hurricane. In Dominica Maria caused $2 Billion in damages. Maria would strike the US territory of Puerto Rico as a high end category 4 hurricane. 2017's Hurricane Irma- Irma made several landfalls at category 5 strength. Irma made landfalls in Saba, St. Martin, St. Marteen, and later Cuba as a category 5 hurricane. In these countries Irma caused $10 Billion in damages. Irma would later make landfall in Florida as a category 4 hurricane, and again as a category 3 hurricane. 2007's Hurricane Felix- Felix made landfall in Nicaragua as a category 5 hurricane with winds 165-175 mph which was the storms's peak. Felix killed 130 people and caused $750 Million in damages. 2007's Hurricane Dean- Dean made landfall in the Yucatan area of Mexico as a category 5 hurricane. In fact Dean was at peak with 175 mph winds when it came ashore. Dean previously made landfall in Jamaica as a high end category 3 hurricane. In Mexico Dean caused $1.9 Billion in damages and over 40 deaths. 1992's Hurricane Andrew- Andrew made landfall in the southern tip of Florida as a category 5 hurricane with winds estimated to be 165-175 mph. Andrew would also go onto to make a final landfall in Louisiana as a category 3 hurricane. Andrew caused over 65 deaths and over $26.50 Billion in damages. 1988's Hurricane Gilbert- Gilbert made landfall in Mexico's Yucatan area as a category 5 hurricane with winds 170 mph at landfall. Previously Gilbert made landfall in Jamaica as a 130-135 mph category 4 hurricane. Gilbert caused over 300 deaths and over $3 Billion in damages to Mexico. 1979's Hurricane David- David made several landfalls, but it was its Dominican Republic landfall that was at category 5 strength. David made landfall as a 175 mph hurricane which was the storm's peak. In the Dominican Republic David caused $1.3 Billion in damages and over 2,000 deaths. 1977's Hurricane Anita- Anita made landfall in Mexico at peak strength with winds 175 mph. 1971's Hurricane Edith- Edith made multiple landfalls but in Nicaragua it was a category 5 at landfall. Edith caused over 30 deaths and $25 million in damages. 1969's Hurricane Camille- Camille made landfall in Mississippi as a category 5 hurricane. In fact, the storm was at its peak with 175 mph winds. Camille caused 250 or more deaths and $1.52 Billion in damages. 1966's Hurricane Inez- Inez made several landfalls but it was its Dominican Republic landfall that was at category 5 strength. Inez made landfall as a 165 mph category 5 hurricane which was the storm's peak. 1955's Hurricane Janet- Janet made landfall in the Yucatan area of Mexico at peak strength with winds 175 mph which made it a category 5. In Mexico Janet killed 1,000 people and caused $60 million in damages. Now here are known category 5 hurricanes at landfall before the Modern Era 1935 Labor Day- This Hurricane made landfall in the Florida Keys as a 180 mph category 5 hurricane. This Hurricane killed 423 people and caused over $100 million in damages. 1933 Cuba and Bahamas- This hurricane made landfall in the Bahamas a as a category 5 hurricane. 1932 Bahamas- This hurricane made landfall in the Bahamas as a category 5 hurricane. This hurricane killed 35 people. 1928 Puerto Rico- This hurricane made landfall in the US Territory of Puerto Rico as a 160 mph category 5 hurricane. It would strike Florida as a category 4 hurricane. Overall, this hurricane killed over 4,000 people and caused over $300 million in damages. 1924 Cuba- This hurricane made landfall in Cuba as a 165 mph category 5 hurricane.
