The 1960's was revolutionary concerning Hurricanes. In 1960 the first weather satellite was launched. Every year the weather satellites got more advanced. These satellites could detect developing tropical systems. In 1965 weather satellites had been around for only 5 years and they were already getting more advanced. Also the 1965 Atlantic Hurricane Season was 60 years ago.

The 1965 season was slightly below average with 10 named storms, 4 became hurricanes, and 1 became a major hurricane category 3, 4, and 5. The main reason for below average activity was the La Nina that allowed the previous season (1964) to be above average faded in the spring of 1965. ENSO conditions rapidly developed into El Nino. El Nino was established by the peak of the hurricane season. This is why the season was slightly below average.

Here is all the storms from 1965. * Beside a hurricanes name means the hurricane was a major hurricane. The pressure is the lowest pressure observed in the storm and the wins are the highest winds observed.

Tropical Storm One (6/13-6/20) pressure 1005 millibars winds 60 mph. Tropical Storm One developed in the Gulf. It made landfall in Florida at peak intensity doing minor damage mostly from tornadoes.

Hurricane Anna (8/21-8/26) pressure 976 millibars 105 mph winds category 2. Hurricane Anna developed in the Central Atlantic. It reached its peak as a category 2 hurricane and did not impact any land.

*Hurricane Betsy (8/27-9/13) pressure 942 millibars winds 140 mph category 4. I made a thread about Hurricane Betsy. Betsy made landfall in Florida as a category 3 and Louisiana as a category 4 hurricane. Betsy was the first hurricane to cause at least $1 Billion dollars worth of damage to the United States. Betsy caused $1.5 Billion dollars worth of damage and over 80 deaths.

Tropical Storm Four (9/4-9/11) Pressure 991 millibars winds 60 mph. A tropical Storm that developed in the North Central Atlantic with no impacts.

Hurricane Carol (9/15-10/1) pressure 974 millibars, 90 mph category 1 hurricane. Hurricane Carol formed in the far Atlantic. The hurricane stayed out to sea and did not impact any land.

Tropical Storm Debbie (9/24-9/30) pressure 1000 millibars winds 60 mph. Debbie made landfall in Mississippi bringing flooding to an area that had been battered by Betsy a month earlier. Debbie caused $25 million dollars in flooding.

Tropical Storm Seven (9/29-10/3) pressure 993 millibars, winds 60 mph. Tropical Storm that formed in the Central Atlantic and stayed out to sea with no impacts.

Hurricane Elena (10/13-10/20) pressure 977 millibars winds 110 mph category 2. Elena formed in the far Atlantic and quickly moved into the central Atlantic were the storm reaches its peak with no impacts.

Tropical Storm 9 (10/16-10/19) pressure 1004 millibars winds 65 mph. The storm made landfall in Southeast Florida but impacts were unknown.

Tropical Storm 10 (11/26-12/2) pressure 999 millibars winds 50 mph. Developed in the Central Atlantic and did not impact any land.

Originally there was thought to be only 6 named storms that developed in this year. However, during the reanalysis project by the National Hurricane Center it was determined there was 4 unknown tropical storms. The 4 tropical storms were added to bring the total to 10 named storms.

Overall, the 1965 season caused $1.52 Billion in damages and 86 deaths. Most of the damage was done by Hurricane Betsy. The 1965 season proved it only takes one hurricane to make it a bad year. Even though, 1965 was 60 years ago Hurricane Betsy is still talked about to this day. Also the 1965 season is infamous for Betsy. The season was influenced by an El Nino that rapidly developed.

The El Nino for the most part surpressed hurricane activity by providing dry air and wind shear. Since 1965 was still in the active phase and the ASO was positive water temperatures were still very warm.

After the 1965 season Hurricane Betsy was retired and will not be used for an Atlantic hurricane again. Hurricane Carol was retired not for this hurricane but for the 1954 Hurricane Carol. Therefore, Betsy is the only named considered retired from this year. 1965 was 60 years ago, but it was infamous and historic as technology continued to advanced.
