Ok, well i think Linux should do something about it... Isn't ActiveX free? Linux could use it. Couldn't it?

Active X

ActiveX is a browser technology developed by Microsoft so in short its probly not free for others to use and wouldn't be able to be used for games as it is.

There are Windows API emulators(If a Linux guru saw me call it an emulator he would give me hell) that let you use windows applications and games, but all the quality ones ive seen aren't freeware.

Linux isn't one company either, Linux is free open source code that can be viewed and edited by anyone, so if you wanted too you could make your own distrobution and sell it to make profit or give it away for free.

Alot of FPS games Doom 3,Quakes games etc always have Linux versions.

Well it makes sense that they would. Those sort of companies want to target everyone they can and thats why MAC always gets a version of Microsoft office and stuff. I thought Active X would be free as it comes with most of the games that you purchase these days anyway. Like i just bought a game and it game with Active X Ver 9... I think itwas Active X...

If u want a gaming computer, get Windows XP (With out SP2)

If you want a gaming console, get a chiped Xbox with emulators for everything.

If you want a computer to do stuff like data editing eg programing and databases, i'd use linux.

I want dual boot with XP and Ubuntu on my next computer, and chip in my Xbox

A mod chipped or Software modded xbox is wonderful for a small low priced media center, you can do a hell of alot with it. I plan on painting and adding LED's to my xbox as well as a DVD window and side fan.

If you never game or or very seldomly do try a GNU/Linux operating System, it should meet all your needs.

Bob: software moddng is a good solution if you dont want to open your xbox and solder wires from the chip to the board risking your xboxes life.

OK! I have always used windows and Have been satisfied. BUT, I think xp takes up way too much system resources. A computer with 256MB of ram is pretty darn slow. And I've been reading about how evil microsoft is. The evilest thing they did was making win. 95. But there was a catch. ALl the early win 95 didin't even work without a fix-it program. And they were making the fix it before they came out with 95. SO they were selling an OS that didn't do what it was supposed too. And it didn't say you needed the Fix it to run it. But anyways.

I have an inspioron 5100. P4 256 MG RAM, 32MG videocard. Dvd/cdrw. 30 GIG hardrive.

Well I didn't have it for long (Bought it from a coworker for 200) and my little niece knocked it off the table. THEN it stopped reading the hardrive. Like there is no hardrive in there. I didin't get the comp with any cd's or anything. But then after a I fiddled around with it it started registering a hard drive. It just couldn't find an OS to boot. (The system setup must come off of you mother board right?) Soo I started looking into free OS, that I can boot from a CD. Just for the purpose of seeing if my haredrive is totally f***ed. I found a real interesting one called Dyne Bolic. I doubt its good to run games on... BUT its fast, easy to use, basically a media powerhouse. But one cool thing it has. It can synch with other comps to handle a workload. Like you could synch it with an X box and when your pc achieved its workload then it would send the process's over to wherever. SO your comps can help each other out. So if you had 5 x-boxs hooked up to a comp, theoretically you'd have more processing power than a dualcore athlon. NOW, I might start using a Lunix OS all the time. But I have some questions.

1. What is the Best?

2. What would run Commercial games the best? I'm sure some can run direct X.

3. The only thing microsoft got sued for is making internet explorer free... And that is pretty gay.

1. What is the Best? Depends what you want it for.

2. What would run Commercial games the best? - Windows, by a long shot.

3. The only thing microsoft got sued for is making internet explorer free... And that is pretty gay. - This isnt even a question.. Firefox is good, but uses alot of ram on a slow machine.

NO, I'm asking what the best Linux OS is to run commercial games on, media etc. etc. LIke somthing that mmrezz was talking about. Somthing that would emulate windows. I"m sure active x doesn't have very many verification process's to see if its running on windows. I'm sure its been done before, and if you could get direct X, then you could prob get most of the commercial games to run on your system.
