This should probly be in Computer discussion. For the most part I use Windows XP. Its Stable and runs all my games yet its a resource hog.

I really think I prefer Linux for regular use like surfing the net, and chatting with people. I also prefer a Gnome desktop to a windows one.

Isn't Bill Gates the majority stock holder of Mac? If so it simply doesn't matter anyway.

Mac needs to get its head out of its ass. I think the only reason Schools ever buy it anymore is that they think Mac=education and windows=business. I would really like to learn about the other operating systems though.

If Bill Gates was the majority stock holder of Mac that would mean he basically owns the company. So I highly doubt it.

Im primarily a Windows user, theres loads of crap I dont like about windows, but I deal with it. I have been exploring a bit into Linux/GNU, and of course theres things I like and dont like about that.

When I used Fedora Core 3 and had everything working it was very enjoyable. Gnome is superior to the Windows GUI. I dont really think there is a superior OS, no one OS can do everything.

Mac is currently (as of OSX) fully-unix-based, so a vote for Mac is a vote for Unix. However, since it is financially funded by the bigwigs at Microsoft, it's also a vote for Windows. Irony, ain't it?

I choose Linux. I haven't found a linux I can agree with. Lindows has the default configuration right, Mandrake has the User-friendliness right, Gentoo has the evolving feature-set right, and Ubuntu has the community-aspect right. If all Linux variants got together and chose just the best things to present, Linux would be the one OS that could and would do it all. Until then, I will still plot and plan my 3dWindowmanager idea, which will put EVEN GNOME to shame, though I do like Gnome the best out of all shells. And maybe Enlightenment. But you can't beat KDE's ease-of-use, and Explorer's Drag-and-drop menus.

I just want the best of all OS's! And free like linux. And why can't I have it? If there are 15 different programs that all have a little bit right, why can't there eventually be one that does it all right?

I know its a hardcore commitment but one day I would like to get into OS design. Right now I have neither the knowledge nor the years of experienced programming required.

You don't need years of experience to write an OS, as you can learn the true lessons from others that have had years of experience, either through interviewing them when you buy them lunch, or from reading online interviews.

That being said, the internet has a lot of online knowledge that you'd be interested in. If you want to make an OS that boots from the hard drive or floppy or whatever, you'll want to learn ASM (Assembly Language). Especially; assembly language specific to Intel/AMD processors, and how to capture control from the bootloader. If you want to make more than just a text-based OS, however, you might consider learning C++, and a graphics library as well.

To polish off your OS, make a compiler program that runs atop your os, and code simple programs with it that support popular formats, like TXT, DOC, WAV, MP3... Include the compiler so other people can code more advanced programs.

For gaming, Windows or Linux, either or.

Not Macs for gaming but they are good for picture editing/distortion. I hate Steve Jobs though he's sort of an a**h***.

Ubuntu is very neat, its easy to use and maintain. Although I think Linux as a whole isn't very good for commercial gaming.

Majority of games are only written to use Direct X and Windows API's thus making them non-compatible with GNU/Linux systems.
