Earlier today, Alex Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky's record for most NHL regular season goals when he scored his 895th career goal against the New York Islanders.

Remarkably, Ovechkin was able to maintain a slightly higher goal scoring rate than Gretkzy en route to this record, despite Gretzky playing in a higher-scoring era. Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 games played. Ovechkin scored his 895th goal today in the 1,487th game of his career.

I saw this earlier today and it was great to see. Some records are unbreakable and this one seemed to be for a long time.

It has made the last couple weeks pretty fun to pay attention to in the NHL while we wait for playoffs.

I’ve never been his biggest fan, especially since they beat Vegas for the cup a few years ago.

With that said, it is an incredible accomplishment to beat a record many people said couldn’t be broken. He’s an old man now by sports standards, but he’s still scoring well.

I was at the Mets game yesterday, which started at 1:40 PM, so they were showing clips from that game every now and then until it happened. I'm excited to see where he finishes since he has another year left on his contract.

Ovi is old as hell, and from what I've seen since Washington and the NHL started tracking this possible broken record, he's usually been up near the blue line hitting one timers. Even people in D.C. (I live 15 minutes away, and work less than a 10 minute walk from the main train station) think that he won't stay, especially if he hits 900 before the season is over, which I think he will.

I read this and was shocked, I had no clue anybody was even close to Gretzsky. I always assumed that record was just unheard of and something always out of reach, like Usain's 100m or something.

Good for him! I still think Gretzsky is the goat, especially when you include assist totals in the picture, but fair play to Ovechkin for setting his name in the history books.
