Its hard to believe that 2014 was 10 years ago. 2014 was full of historic weather events ranging from blizzards, floods and tornadoes. Thankfully the 2014 hurricane season was below average and a majority of the storms stayed out to sea. Conditions in the ENSO region of the Equatorial Pacific started off as Neutral. However, by Summer an El Nino had developed. This El Nino would be a very strong one and last from Summer 2014 to the end of 2015. As a meteorologist I'm going to be taking a look back 10 years ago and list some of the historic weather events.

January 3rd-2014 A Nor'Easter rapidly developed off the Eastern US Coastline. This Nor'Easter brought blizzard conditions to New England. Boston was the hardest hit as some locations near Boston received 20 inches of snow and winds over 50 mph. Other places in New England were also hit hard with dangerously cold temperatures, and snow. Overall, 16 people died and $2 billion was caused in damages.

January 11th 2014- Severe thunderstorms developed across the south producing 60-70 mph damaging winds. 4 tornadoes also occurred.

January 21st 2014- Another Nor'Easter type system brought significant snow to Southeast New York and Connecticut. Some places around New York City saw 12-16 inches of snow.

January 25th 2014- A tornado outbreak occurred in Great Britain. 11 tornadoes occurred in England. In addition, the rains also caused flooding.

January 30th 2014- A rare southern snowstorm impacted the southern states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. While these states can get ice storms significant snowstorms are rare in the valley areas. The winter storm started off as ice and some locations saw 0.3-0.4 inches of ice. Then as the freezing rain changed to snow a lot of places got 4-6 inches of snow. A total of 13 people died mostly due to car crashes.

February 14th-17th 2014 Another winter storm impacted the southern United States bringing more ice and snow. Some locations saw another 4-6 inches of snow. After impacting the South. The Storm system moved off the Carolina coastline were it would intensify into a powerful Nor'Easter. The Nor'Easter would impact the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States. In the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast 15-25 inches of snow was reported. This storm system claimed 22 lives and cost $800 million in damages.

February 21st 2014- Shortly after the winter storm from the 14th-17th. A squall line developed from Illinois to the Gulf Coast. This squall line produced widespread wind damage from thunderstorms and tornadoes. A total of 43 tornadoes occurred from this line of severe thunderstorms.

March 25th-29th- A slow moving storm system produced flooding rains in California and even a few tornadoes. The storm system would produce a squall line that would start in Missouri to Louisiana. This line moved eastward producing more tornadoes. A total of 14 tornadoes occurred.

April 25th 2014-An outbreak of destructive tornadoes occurred in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. A total of 11 tornadoes occurred. A lot of these tornadoes were EF2 or higher type tornadoes.

April 26th-29th 2014- One of the worst tornado outbreaks of the year occurred in Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. A powerful storm system moved into Texas and Oklahoma. The storm system intensified and started to produce tornadoes. April 28th was the worst day as a lot of tornadoes that were EF2 or higher occurred. Overall, 82 tornadoes occurred, 30 of those were EF2 or higher, 38 people died and $1.1 billion dollars of damage was done.

May 10th-12th 2014- A tornado outbreak occurred in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska. A total of 42 tornadoes occurred.

June 16th-18th 2014- Another long duration tornado event unfolded. This tornado outbreak produced tornadoes in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. This outbreak produced 5 EF4 type tornadoes and several long tracked EF2 or higher tornadoes. Overall 76 tornadoes were confirmed, 3 people died and $125 million was done in damages. Unlike the April 28th tornado outbreak this one mostly impacted rural areas.

June 30th-July 1st 2014- A series of Derecho events struck the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. These Derecho produced thunderstorm wind damage 80-90 mph in some of the stronger storms. Also several brief tornadoes also occurred. A total of 44 tornadoes occurred.

July 8th- 2014 A total of 14 tornadoes occurred in New York and Pennsylvania. Several severe thunderstorms developed producing damaging winds and tornadoes.

July 15th 2014- A tornado outbreak occurred in Western Australia. One of the more destructive tornadoes touched down in Perth Australia.

August 29th 2014- A tornado outbreak occurred in Western Russia as severe storms developed. These storms produced large hail and 5 tornadoes.

September 29th 2014 Severe Thunderstorms strike Wyoming and Colorado. These storms produced large hailstones. Denver Colorado reported hail stones up to 2 inch in diameter. Overall the hail storms caused $250 million in damages with 200 of that occurring in the Denver Metro area.

October 14th 2014- A severe thunderstorm outbreak occurred in Eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Western Tennessee, and parts of Mississippi. A total of 47 tornadoes occurred.

November 18th-20th 2014- Two winter storms impacted western New York. These storms were enhanced by lake effect snow. Buffalo New York saw 6-7 feet of snow from these two storm systems. Buffalo NY set several snowfall records.

November 30th 2014- Hurricane Season ends with a below average season. Only 8 named storms developed, 6 became hurricanes and 2 became major hurricanes. Most of the storms stayed out to sea.

December 24th 2014- A small but destructive tornado outbreak occurred on the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. A total of 10 tornadoes occurred and over 100 million dollars worth of damage was done. Farther North heavy rain produced flash flooding.

In summary, the year 2014 had a lot of wild weather. The biggest events were destructive winter storms in the South, Mid Atlantic and Northeast part of the United States. Destructive tornado outbreaks plagued the South and Midwest. While the Rocky Mountain front range had a huge hailstorm.
