Hurricane Season runs from June 1st to November 30th. Since 1990 the Atlantic Basin averages 14 named storms, 7 becoming hurricanes, and 3 becoming major hurricanes (categories 3,4, and 5). In a given year there will will be hurricanes that reach different categories. However, has there been any season that had all 5 categories in it. The answer is yes. Being a meteorologist this got me to thinking about the seasons that had all 5 categories in it. I made a blog post about this topic, but I decided I would do it here as well. Here is a list of seasons that had all 5 categories.
The 2017 season. The 2017 season had a total of 17 named storms with 10 becoming major hurricanes, and 6 became major hurricane seasons. This was a very destructive seasons.
Category 1 hurricanes: Franklin and Nate Category 2 hurricanes: Gert and Katia Category 3 hurricanes: Lee and Ophelia Category 4 hurricanes: Harvey and Jose Category 5 hurricanes: Irma and Maria
The 2005 was historic for reasons I have mentioned in other posts. This season also had all 5 categories in it. In fact it was the 3rd season in a roll to have all 5 categories.
Category 1 hurricanes: Cindy, Nate, Ophelia, Phillippe, Stan, Vince, and Epsilon Category 2 hurricanes: Irene Category 3 hurricanes: Maria and Beta Category 4 hurricanes: Dennis Category 5 hurricanes: Emily, Katrina, Rita, and Wilima
The 2004 season was very active and was the second season in a row to have all 5 categories included in it.
Category 1 hurricanes: Gaston and Lisa Category 2 hurricanes: Danielle Category 3 hurricanes: Alex and Jeanne Category 4 hurricanes: Charley, Frances, and Karl Category 5 hurricanes: Ivan
2003 season was active and started a 3 year period of seasons having all 5 categories.
Category 1 hurricanes: Claudette, Danny, and Erika Category 2 hurricanes: Juan Category 3 hurricanes: Kate Category 4 hurricanes: Fabian Category 5 hurricanes: Isabell.
The 1998 season was above average and destructive. It also had all 5 categories. Pending reanalysis of the analysis project. 1998 was the first season in 43 years to have all 5 categories.
Category 1 hurricanes: Ivan, Lisa, and Nicole Category 2 hurricanes: Danielle, Earl, Jeanne, and Karl Category 3 hurricanes: Bonnie Category 4 hurricanes: George Category 5 hurricanes: Mitch.
1955 Season
Category 1 hurricanes: Gladys Category 2 hurricanes: Diane, Edith, Flora, and Katie Category 3 hurricanes: Hilda Category 4 hurricanes: Connie, and Ione Category 5 hurricanes: Janet.
Indeed, there has only been 6 seasons in the modern era (1950-Present) to have all 5 hurricane categories in it. Thus, it is a rare event. Now, a lot of seasons have been very active and come close to having all categories. The 2020 season had a lot of different categories in it, but it did not have a category 5. 2018 had a lot of categories including a category 5 storm, but did not have a category 3. 2010 had all categories except for a category 5.
