February will be upon us soon. For some February means a continuation of cold and snow. For some regions in the USA February can be a wild month especially in the South.

The states that mainly have wild weather in February are Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. These states are part of the southern region of the United States.

In these region February can bring winter weather. It can also bring severe thunderstorms including tornadoes. So why is February such a wild month in this area.

In the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Alabama temps start to warm in the month of February. In addition, warm air from the gulf can cause temps to be in the 60's sometimes. This is important in providing instability for severe storms.

On the other hand, cold fronts and polar vortexes can bring chilly temperatures to the region. This is when sometimes temps can drop into the teens at night. If cold air is in place moisture from the Gulf can cause snowfall in the region. What is more likely is cold air comes to place, the gulf causes warm air to be pulled into storm systems. Therefore ice storms can be a problem in the month of February.

Typically in February the jet stream starts to sag father south. This often brings storm systems right over the states I mentioned. When conditions are right it can either be severe thunderstorms including tornadoes or a winter storm.

Another danger in February is flooding. The Gulf of Mexico provides a lot of moisture. Storm systems pull up this moisture coming from the Gulf. Sometimes storm systems can dump 2-5 inches of rain at once. If the jet stream is active a few days latter another soaker might come in.

Basically the states I mentioned are a often a battle ground zones for storm systems, cold air, warm air. It is no wonder this area has wild weather for the month.

Here are some infamous weather events that have occurred in the states I mentioned above.

Upper and Mid South Flooding February 2021- An active jet pattern caused by a La Nina caused several storm systems to move over the same area. This caused flooding in a lot of places. Some locations had 8-12 inches for the month of February.

February 2020 severe weather and flooding. A storm system move up from the southwest. This storm system produced flooding in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. In addition to the heavy rain severe thunderstorms were embedded in the rain. Kentucky and TN had straight line winds from thunderstorms. Tornadoes occurred in Alabama and Georgia.

February 2015 Snowstorm- A polar Vortex pulled very cold air down in the region. A storm system developed in the southwest and moved upwards. The right Gulf moisture provided moisture. A lot of places had 4-8 inches of wet snow in the valley.

February 2014 Ice/Snow Storm- A storm system developed and moved over the region. Very cold air was in place. However, warm air was being pulled into the system from the Gulf. Most locations started off as freezing rain. Some places got 0.2-0.4 inches of ice. Eventually the colder air overtook the warm air and the freezing rain changed to snow. Most places ended up with 4-8 inches of snow on top of the ice. Several cities were shut down.

February 28th 2011- A squall line developed ahead of a cold front. The squall line stretched from Kentucky down to Mississippi. As this squall line moved eastward it intensified producing damaging winds up to 70 mph. This squall line also produced tornadoes.

February 5th/6th 2008- Super Tuesday outbreak. A powerful storm system moved into the Southern part of the USA. This storm had a lot of wind energy with it. Numerous thunderstorms developed and turned severe. Tornadoes, thunderstorm straight line wind reports and large hail were reported across the region.

February 21st 1993 Tornado Outbreak- This was a severe outbreak that impacted Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. Severe thunderstorm developed ahead of a cold front. These storms started to rotate and produce tornadoes. In my area alone a total of 5 tornadoes touched down. Also the thunderstorms did severe weather damage.

In conclusion, as you can see this region can have wild weather in February. Due to the area being a battle ground zone. Also due to the reason I mentioned.
