firefox is totally independent of Internet Explorer.

You could remove IE.... but I wouldn't recommend it. It's not hurting anyone just sitting there doing nothing.

Actually I don't think you can remove IE safely, it's pretty much fully integrated into Windows now so if you remove it it can cause thing to not work as well.
You can't just delete IE, that will cause problems.
If you use Firefox just ignore IE, it's not like it does any harm to just leave it and ignore it.

Yeah, you can go ahead and delete the shortcuts no worries.
For shortcuts on the start menu you will want to right click them and choose "remove from this list" if it's avaiable, otherwise you can just pick delete.
