Why does everyone hate the Isekai genre in anime? I don't really understand all the hate because Isekai is personally my favorite. I basically grew up with media that's essentially the precursor to Isekai like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson so I spent most of my life enjoying the concept, even before I started watching anime. Then, many of the Isekai anime I watched seemed to follow very similar formulas to what I grew up with so I didn't really have any issues.

I can understand that a lot of the time, the protagonist is bland and boring but even in those cases, the world, other characters, or humor usually make up for it.

But why does everyone else hate the genre and what are your thoughts?

I don't think everyone hates isekai, I think people just hate the fact that the wide majority of isekai are rather mediocre and usually outside of having maybe one or two gimmicks like being isekai'd while having a cell phone or being isekai'd but this time you are just really overpowered with little effort because god accidentally summoned truck-kun and they get a harem by simply breathing. Honestly, I do think the genre can be tons of fun. Like with most things, there is both good and bad to be found, I guess your enjoyment can also depend on which you decide to focus on.

I don't think Isekai is bad nor do I "hate" it but yeah I do feel like it's rarely that interesting, compared to the media that it borrows from. Like the post above me mentions, they typically all roll out the same exact way and so it starts feeling like once you've seen one, you've kinda seen them all. Of course there are some exceptions though. I almost feel like the genre honestly executes better as a concept to a video game rather than an anime...
