Hello all! This is a small social experiment. I was home-schooled and I live in one of the southern states. I was taught The Civil War was fought mainly over the freedom of black slaves. I was talking to someone I grew up with recently who was in public school who said that he was taught The Civil War was fought for taxation and nothing was said about slavery. I want to know if you're from thew U.S. what were you taught about the U.S. Civil War and where were you taught it? These answers are always all over the place.

I was also home schooled and was taught it was over freedom of black slaves. Interesting that people different places are being taught different things, which speaking of I was taught from like 4th to 8th grade that World War 1 was between the US and I think Germany? So for the longest time I had no idea why it was called World War and I only found out in 9th grade more about it when they finally started teaching us more accurate which was really confusing after hearing it one way so long.

I was public-schooled in Minnesota, and we were also taught the civil war was fought over slavery (mostly in middle school, I think?), although I have heard from some people who are more interested in history that it was over a multiplicity of things. I think some of the issue is that so much of our economy at the time was reliant on slave labor (NOT condoning it, btw), so maybe that's where some of the taxation issues come in? I wish I knew more about history, but it's just one of those subjects for me...
