Finding things to make small replies to isn't really in the spirit of trying to make this forum more active, so I'm going to slap this down. General chat seemed like the most applicable.

I do a lot of D&D and Pathfinder, and with covid projected to be still a thing this time 2021 people may be turning to this kind of thing as substitute socializing. Since that's the case...

Tip one: beware the player who is never in doubt. This is 90% likelihood to be the Dunning-Kruger effect, not competence. This is what caused one player, the same player in every case, to try to kick down a door until he was lightning bolted through it, stand right where he could take 90% of his health in damage in a single round, stand where a swarm could instantly blind him and nearly kill him before less confident characters forced the swarm away, threw a grenade at a much too distant target and kill an ally and finally jump what he assumed to be an easy distance right off an airship.

Tip two: But My Character Would Do It is not an excuse. Don't let it be. Let me clarify that, if you're in an evil group and slaughter the friar because it was evil to do then nobody in the group is going to mind that act or the fact you're now being assaulted by the town guard. That's a natural consequence to your actions. But My Character is what you hear when someone wants to insist that being racist, dishonest or just plain nasty is something that they should be allowed without repercussions. It's just like real life; if you don't like how someone is acting then you don't shrug it off when told that that's just how they are. So if they claim that you tell them that they can learn to rein it in or stop being in the group.

Tip three: remember that if you are playing one of these it is collaborative, not competitive. You don't have to fight the Game Master (unless he's triggering tip two). If you don't want to go to the dungeon then you do not have to be obnoxious about it; say why and work with them instead of behaving like a customer who was just told they can't get the Wednesday special on Tuesday.
