Yes, I'm interested in reading the opinions of other users. The title speaks for itself. Nowadays, it's more common than ever for a game with an anime style to be rated M (PEGI 16/18 and CERO D or Z in the case of Europe and Japan), there are many examples of that. Catherine (and Catherine: Full Body), Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed (I can't believe I'll play that game soon...), most Senran Kagura games, most Shin Megami Tensei games, AI: The Somnium Files, Punch Line, Root Letter (and Root Letter: Last Answer), the Death end re;Quest games, Gun Gun Pixies, some Corpse Party games, Date A Live: Rio-Reincarnation, and many, many more...

These games, even more so than games with ''realistic'' graphics apparently, can be very ''controversial'', somehow, putting that aside, most games I play nowadays don't have realistic graphics, and so, I play a lot of games with cartoony graphics or an anime art style. As I said, nowadays it's very common for these games to be rated M, more than ever, so, if other users on Vizzed have played at least one or two of those games (I'm sure that's the case), I'd like to know which one is considered the best among those games.

If you ask me, my favorite anime style game rated M is probably a tie between the Gal*Gun games, the Senran Kagura games (especially the ones of the musou and beat-em-up genre), and Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. All those games are a blast to play, they can be very funny, and have a lot of content to make you come back for more, I'm not saying that Mary Skelter 2 and the Death end re;Quest games aren't enjoyable to play, for example, it's just that, in my opinion, those games are even more fun to play than other games with the same age rating and similar art style/graphics. Gal*Gun, the Senran Kagura games, and of course, Danganronpa Another Episode, are amazing in my opinion. I know for sure that people love the modern Persona games, and many people really like Persona 5, however, I haven't played Persona 5 (and I won't play it), I played Persona 4 from beginning to end several years ago, and it was okay...it's one of my least favorite turn-based RPGs...

So, what is you favorite anime style game with an M-rating...?

lolid23 :

Most anime games end up with a T rating, but Shin Megami Tensei is my crème de la crème.

If you didn't like Persona 4 because it lacked substance,
you would probably like the original SNES games more.
Shin Megami Tensei 1, 2, if..., Strange Journey, as well as Digital Devil Story 1 and 2.

Or if you find them too difficult, you might want to play the Persona games
before the series was tainted by the mainstream.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is a two-part series.
Innocent Sin is the best Persona.

M4g1cW4rr10r : It is true that most anime games end up with a T and 12 rating in America and Europe respectively, when I say America, I'm always talking about the continent of course, it's well known that I'm Mexican, but anyway, even though most anime games are rated T and PEGI 12, nowadays it's more common than ever for these games to be rated M and whatnot, as I said.

In the case of Shin Megami Tensei, I've been interested in the games before, I haven't played Shin Megami Tensei IV for example, but I've wanted to play that game, it's a 3DS exclusive after all, and I'm a person of exclusives, so...maybe someday, who knows.

For me it would probably be all the Persona games, especially Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal. It's easily interchangeable as my favorite game franchise ever. I'm not too big a fan of most anime-esque games though because most take the fighting game route or are visual novels without much actual gameplay.

zanderlex : What about the many anime rpgs that are M-rated for example? It's not just Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. Mary Skelter, the Death end re;Quest games, Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, The Caligula Effect: Overdose, the Conception games, Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2...there are many anime-esque games that got an M rating by the ESRB and aren't fighting games or visual novels, yes, many of these games belong in the visual novel genre, but there are many anime games for adults that actually have a lot of gameplay and content, sometimes, the game in question can be of another genre, not just an RPG or visual novel. Senran Kagura: Peach Ball is a pinball game, Gun Gun Pixies is some kind of third person shooter, Catherine is a puzzle game, Code Vein is similar to Dark Souls...the list goes on. An anime game with an M rating can be...a lot of things.

If you haven't played those games, or aren't interested in the games I mentioned, that's fine, I mean...to be fair, I...haven't played every game I just mentioned, but yeah, games with an anime art style can be varied when it comes to genre or gameplay, even more so than games with realistic graphics at times. Personally, I recommend the Mary Skelter games, the Death end re;Quest games, the Senran Kagura games including Senran Kagura: Peach Ball, and of course, the Gal*Gun games and Danganronpa Another Episode. The rest are games I don't recommend that much, I guess.

cid789 : Lol, a lot of those games aren't anime games, but good post, I'll consider it a joke post, for the most part. Just one thing, when you said ''desert of roses'', I think you meant ''Rumble Roses'', those wrestling games published by Konami many years ago.

I know Persona has already been brought up but my favorite game of all time is Persona 5 Royal so well I guess that's my answer I just can't see any game ever challenging it's spot for my favorite game so in that sense it also can't be challenged for my favorite anime game with an M rating.

SonicOlmstead : A lot of people love Persona 5 Royal, so, that's not a bad answer. The original Persona 5 is already a loved game by many and it's considered an amazing turn-based RPG, and most people say that Persona 5 Royal is even better. With new content including a new playable character (Kasumi Yoshizawa) and a few improvements, Persona 5 Royal is seen as the definite Edition of a game that was already fantastic. I don't think it's outrageous if you see Persona 5 Royal as one of your favorite games of all time, I'm sure some people will have that opinion, Persona 5 Royal is that amazing for a lot people after all...

Happy new year!
