This is a poem I wrote after having a terrible time in my fall semester this year. I look back at this poem and am amazed at how strikingly relevant it is to what me and millions and others are going through right now.

“Something New”

I’m amazed at how one period of time
can change us so quickly.
New situations force us to adapt and rethink
what we thought we had figured out.
It turns out there’s much more we didn’t know.

Thankfully the changes in circumstances
led me to change for the better.
I know that for some, it got to be too much
and they cracked under the pressure.
I feel bad for them because they weren’t ready.

But instead of mourning for them
I want to reach out to them and explain
that even when we walk carefully, we fall,
and we can’t know when that will happen,
but we shouldn’t be afraid of something new.

This is profound. It highlights the inevitability of failure, and the growth one finds in it. Failure is what makes people hesitant to try things, so the last line and poems name are fitting. I have been through a ton of uncertainty, and I've always grown from it. I think trying things is the only way to get anywhere in most circumstances, unless you've already got what you want/need.

pennylessz : I appreciate your comments on this poem! Yeah, I had a lot of failure that led up to writing this. But like you said, growth can be found in failure. I have grown a lot from this school year and most of that wouldn't have happened without big risks and misses.
