No, I'm fairly certain Xbox 360s are designed to play DVDs in addition to games. I know I've done it on my Xbox 360, though I'm not sure if it depends on the version of the 360 that you have. I don't think Blu Ray DVDs will work, but it won't damage the DVD or the console if you try.

hellno163 : With most disc based consoles, putting another disc shouldn't damage the disc unless there is a hardware fault with the actual reader itself. Worst case scenario it simply won't read the disc, though the Xbox 360 should be able to, even the Original XBOX was capable of it if you had a dongle or hacked the console to use the DVD mode without the dongle.

I've never tried inserting a DVD into an Xbox 360, but if my experience with a PS3 is anything to go by, its competitor should be able to handle DVDs well enough, too.
