I wanted to post a thread about how little calories sit-ups burn, but while doing research, I found two very conflicting statements.

issaonline says "According to Harvard Health Publications, sit-ups can be very hard on the spine and potentially damaging."

https://www.issaonline.com/blog/index.cfm/2016/are-sit-ups-bad-for-you-the-us-military-seems-to-think-so

But Healthine says this. "They promote good posture by working your lower back and gluteal muscles. With a larger range of motion, situps target more muscles than crunches and static core exercises."

https://www.healthline.com/health/sit-ups benefits

I mean, should I do them or not? My spine already sucks. The world is an insane place. I'm sure there's way more info, but not enough time for me to type something comprehensive about it.

There are lots of places that will say that every exercise, including push ups and even jumping jacks are harmful for a number of reasons so you need to take everything with a grain of salt.

I think it would probably also depend on how much you do them at a time since too much of anything is never usually a good thing, since you may end up with cramps or worse but usually if you do your warm up and cool down exercises you don't have much to worry about.

Most of these studies are most likely accounting for things that would happen over time, and when constantly doing it. If you take breaks every now and then, you should be fine.

The problem is that sit-ups are VERY EASY to do wrong.

You absolutely should do sit-ups. But you should also do them correctly. Healthline actually has a good article on this here, and it contrasts sit-ups and crunches (which are different, yes!) well.

Just exercise with caution. The benefits significantly outweigh the risks. Just watch your form, and put more emphasis on doing 10 good ones than doing 100 bad ones.

Sit-ups should definitely be done at least once in a while. I probably won't do them much at all because I usually can't do them well. But whatever kinds of exercises people can do, that's great!
