So about two weeks ago I started a new job at Amazon in distribution. It lured me in by saying that there's no resume needed and no interview but applying was a pain because even though they're always hiring, each job is gone minutes after it's posted.

When I first applied, it kept saying there's no shifts available with my filters. I literally had all the filters on "whatever" such as any number of hours, any location, etc. Took two months before I sawna shift posted and whenever I would click on one it would say it was already taken.

Then I finally got one and a few days after the background check was my first day.

It's literally the most laid back job ever. The minimum to keep the job is four hours a month, and the uniform is street clothes so that other workers and customers think you're just a random person.

I work out of a Whole Foods, and whenever someone buys food, household supplies, cleaning supplies, medications, books, etc, we go around the store and pick everything up so we can give it to drivers.

When I'm on the store floor getting items, I don't see any of our bosses for hours at a time and we can listen to music and eat/drink while shopping. So it's a very "left to your own devices" kind of job.

I'm probably going to work at least 12 hours a week until school starts and then buy a ton of video games or drugs or whatever.

That sounds really rough, I am really sorry to hear that. I hope you hang in there though although I am glad that it seems rather laid back for the most part, all the more to you.

I liked it and it was fun but I haven't gone in 2 months because it's impossible to pick up shifts.

Oof that's a shame ( Although I am really glad that you liked it and found it fun, you don't normally hear people saying good things about work usually I feel although it is also completely understandable why too.

Working here during the pandemic has been pretty nice. Got a $2/hr raise plus randomly if too many workers call out for a shift, that shift gets an extra $5/hr to lure people to work. Plus since there's nobody coming into actual stores to shop or to pick stuff up, the work itself is a lot easier.

As a result, I've been trying to do 8-12 hours a week. The only downside right now is that it's right in the middle of NYC.

I mean it sucks that it’s in the middle of New York but the pay though, that’s pretty decent. Been working a lot more of is it still difficult to get a shift at times?

becerra95 : Being in the middle of NY sucks, but so far NY is still a ghost town. Once I get off the train it's an 8 block walk and I pass maybe 10 people total. Normally there's 15-20 people per block when it isn't busy.

It's been a lot easier to get shifts for the last month because a lot of workers are afraid and don't claim shifts. Plus they added a new closing shift and not a lot of people like closing so I take that when I get a chance.

The only problem is that the hours for my main job were changed from 9AM to 1PM. So if go to Amazon after, I'd have a 5 hour break and I would get home so late that I'd only get 4 hours of sleep before my next shift.

zanderlex : Wow, yeah. It must be quite rough to be in the middle of New York. It's good that you're helping Amazon out since I'm sure way more people are ordering stuff from it now.

People have been ordering stuff online less. Since it's mostly food, lots of people have been starting to lose trust in other people handling their food and have started shifting towards going to supermarkets/Target/Wal-Mart/etc so that they can inspect and handle everything themselves. Nearly two weeks ago there was a day when the last order closed three hours before our shift ended.

zanderlex : Oh OK. That makes sense since people are trying to be as safe as possible.

Well, I was fired a couple days, though they technically called it a voluntary termination. It was because I wasn't able to keep the minimum of 12 hours worked in a month because of stuff that kept coming up. It's a bit disappointed and if they were to give me another chance I definitely would be taking more shifts.

It's a bit weird though because I still get an email every day with shifts that are available.
