Are the Eragon books actually good?

As a kid, my mother had me read these things. But I actually don't remember a ton about them. I watched the sub par movie, but I'm sure the books are better. Heck, they're not all called Eragon are they? At the same time, I think I've heard some lackluster stuff about them. Do you have any insight you could share?

I doubt I'll get back into them. I just thought about this on a whim. I'm also curious about Artemis Fowl. Now that was a pretty cool book.
