Sword of Mana

Sword of Mana review
Graphics-9/10

Let’s begin with the positives, Sword of Mana has some the
most immersive and gorgeous visuals of GBA system. The color palette is shear beauty,
a mix between lush vibrant tones, soft muted pastels and dark rich colors. I
also love the changing appearance of the backgrounds during the different times
of day. I found myself walking in and out of areas to see how the color palette
changed from dawn-dusk. But I do take into account that for some this game is
too bright given the storyline, though I disagree   When I first started drafting this review I realized that it
wasn’t just the colors that made this game beautiful, but the fine detail that
is every where and on every thing. Nothing was left untouched, from the
background to the sprites everything is done in a way that it looks organic; it
looks like a complete world. The touches I like the most are the small things,
the glittering sands in Jadd, waving leaves and flickering candle light. These
small touches, once again, make the world feel organic. The sprites are also
beautiful, of course, but not just the main characters but the enemies as well.

Now on to the negative, the character portraits, I hate
them. It’s not because they are poorly done in anyway, they’re not, it’s
because they’re static. Let me explain, the point of character portraits in
games are not only to show use how the characters look, but to further carry
the emotions of the provided text. Likewise the sprites interaction in cinematic scenes
is really rigid; some very moving moments were spoiled because the portraits
never change and the sprites stand around like lead blocks. When the text and
music is emotionally charged and the physically personification of this emotion
is passive at best, it’s visually off putting.
