And, since they're not in the poll yet (you should probably add 'em), I won't vote... since my favorite is (apparently, by the way I structure my teams) ghost. It's pretty useful, several good moves for attacking, status, or defensive strategies... moves like Destiny Bond can even the tide of battle, while Shadow Ball can deal lots of damage in the right hands. Throw in immunity to two types, and you've got a good fighting force.

I adore grass types! They have the best healing moves: Synthesis,Leech Seed, and Ingrain. They also have awesome sp.atk! Speed is probably what they lack but overall. I will always choose grass type as my starter.

While some of those can be useful... Smeargle is really only good for breeding. But I get what you're saying: Normal types can learn very diverse attacks (usually) and are therefore good battlers, when their stats stack up right. I actually have a very good Persian that I'm training on-and-off at the moment (current focus is Umbreon for competitive battling if I ever get to).

Dragon types are just so fun to train. Especially Dragonite, which can learn so many different powerful moves like Thunder, Fire Blast, Blizzard, and Hyper Beam to name a few.
Plus they have little weaknesses, like Ice can be a little hard to find.
