A lot of the new "metal" is awful. Slipknot is a joke of a band.... "omg we wear masks...we're scary!"...

Sirenia, Epica, Deathstars are all good goth metal

The only avant-garde metal band that I know of is Stolen Babies, but they're my favorite band. They also fall under Dark Carabet, which is a slightly newer genre with a dark circus or carnival vibe to it.

Anyways, Mastodon, Gojira, Baroness, As I Lay Dying, Amon Amarth, Pantera, Slayer, System of a Down, Lamb of God, Disturbed, Black Label Society... Stuff like that :]

I also like bands that mix up genres, so on their CD's it doesn't just sound the same. Like some bands have some Death Metal songs and some more groovy metal songs or melodic songs, like Dethklok... lol even though they aren't real, but Brenden Small has made some amazingly heavy songs.
