For most of 2025 and parts of 2026, I had been considering the idea of abandoning my very long-standing preference for PC, and starting to fully immerse myself into the PlayStation environment. I have owned all generations of PlayStation consoles (though I don't pick up mid-generation versions), and all their portables, as Sony is by far my #1 pick for playing games that weren't initially playable for PC. But these days, more games are getting native PC ports on day 1 (the quality of these ports is another topic... but alas), and if you're relatively caught up on gaming news, you can kind of see how all of these console manufacturers are starting to implode on themselves with repeated bad PR decisions. Honestly, it's some twisted timeline we're in when Nintendo is looking like the good guy right now, and that's a generous interpretation. And so I'm thinking to myself... well shoot, I guess I'm sticking to PC for a bit longer... if only RAM sticks weren't 800 dollars! Some of the parts in my rig are legitimately coming up on 13-14 years old and I kinda figured it was about that time to just get a whole fresh new setup (besides my SSDs which I'd transfer). But computer part prices are just astronomical now... I'm no stranger to spending the kind of money that a mid-end PC goes for these days, but I'm still struggling to justify the cost in my head, knowing what the costs were not even a year ago. How about you guys? If you're planning on buying any tech, are you waiting it out to see if prices go down, or are you just going to brute force your way through now? It'll probably be the switch 2 for the foreseeable future as it's my primary console to play on. I've never seen the industry in a more peril state as the Series X is gonna go up in August and the switch 2 up in price in September. Sony is also doubling down on their decision to focus on live service slop heading into the PS6 generation so....all in all I'm probably not gonna pickup any new gaming systems anytime soon I've never seen the industry in a more peril state as the Series X is gonna go up in August and the switch 2 up in price in September. I'm resigned to the fact that I don't ever plan to play high end games because no matter how much I want to I won't ever own a PC that can handle it and I'd prefer to go through and play older games that I know will be good than hope a new game is good only to be disappointed. Most of the AAA games that have come out have almost zero appeal to me. I want single player games. If I have to play online with others then I'm not buying the game. I'm okay with that. It means I can keep stringing along the laptop I have and play the games I enjoy rather than worrying about upgrading or replacing. I recently replayed the original StarCraft and really enjoyed it. I intend to beat the expansion and then probably replay Warcraft 2 and/or 3. Just because I can. It's been so long since I've played either one that I won't remember them so well that the levels are boring or too easy or anything. I almost feel bad for people trying to play new games on new tech but then I remember that no one is forced to do that so then I go back to my old school or emulated games and enjoy my peaceful gaming life. Tech is ridiculously overpriced, and it doesn't seem like it'll get better. After the switch, I abandoned console entirely to do PC gaming, and I still have not bought a console. I was thinking of getting a PS5/XBSX for GTA 6, but the price and likely difficulty playing GTA 6 made me think otherwise. I bought a brand new top of the line PC back in December since Costco had a ridiculous deal on it, and thank god I did. My computer was getting old and an upgrade was coming, but if I didn't get a new PC I wouldn't have enough money to upgrade these days, especially RAM. I do buy sim racing tech, but honestly the prices of all of those had stayed pretty similar since their components aren't getting boosted as much. They've actually gone down in price for mid level stuff, which is kind of nice for the hobby. I also don't buy games like I used to, since $70-$80 is steep for something I don't want really bad. I bought a new PC just last year, around October I think. I already saw the immense costs for mid-end PCs so when I saw one which basically costed the same as my old one did back in 2016 I immediately got it. Not sure if it was brand new or whatever, it's an upgrade for me and that's everything I need. Technology has just become a luxury thing nowadays. The price of games is no longer a guarantee of quality, RAM is scarce because of the AI scam that some companies are awakening from... We can no longer afford to get top-end machinery for our leisure time, and even if we could we're not always guaranteed a decent product. Day-one patches followed by apologies from the devs, the issues with Microsoft 11 and other PR decisions like OP said are the usual thing nowadays. I won't get any new tech probably ever again. I've had an interest for a couple Switch games or even older-generation games, but the state of the current industry lessens the appeal and so I always end up going to my old friends. Not like I care, my gaming days are behind me due to free time and focusing on other things like board games, which by the way are much cheaper and appealing right now. I saw a news piece recently that Nvidia GPUs are about to hike in price sometimes soon, and I'm sure AMD will follow not long after. It's really increasing the pressure on me to purchase soon and worry about regretting it later. Like I said before, it certainly won't put me into debt or anything but I do still feel obligated to make sure I'm making intelligent decisions with my money. I saw a post from a guy who's selling a computer that basically has my ideal specs (5070Ti as a GPU, not gonna bother listing the rest) for $1600, which is a FANTASTIC deal. I'm trying to get in talks with him but he hasn't responded in a few days... not sure if communication fell through, sold it to someone else, or if he's just a busy man. Hoping for the latter!
