Mega Man IV Featured Review

Mega Man IV Review by: tornadocam - 9.5/10

A fantastic Mega Man Game (MM IV review)
Mega Man is back once again in this new adventure to take down the forces of Dr. Wily and restore the world into an orderly state. So here we go.

Story: 8
Before I begin this is your typical Mega Man game. Dr. Wily is at it again and is trying to take over the world. In Mega Man IV the way he goes about it is different as in most Mega Man games. It is a peaceful day in the large city or world.  A Robot Master exposition is being held. Dr. Light sends Mega Man there just to keep an eye on things. Suddenly, Dr. Wily appears in his flying saucer and sends a radio transmission to the Robot Masters. The transmission activates them and they go into a rampage. Mega Man is immune to the transmissions so he is not effected. Mega Man goes to stop Dr. Wily and bring the robot masters back under control. However, Mega Man is soon greeted by Dr. Wily's new Mega Man killer named Ballade, who is one of the more powerful Mega Man killers Mega Man has faced. Okay that is a good plot and it was creative. After all, the fake bad guys had been used to death such as in Mega Man 4, 5 and 6. So Capcom went back to the basics in this game. I really like the story  despite it being nothing new the plot was creative. But there is just one confusing thing. Most people tend to not read the plot in the books so they often start playing the game right away. In the intro of the game Dr. Wily seems to release 4 robot masters onto the city. You do not see him send out a transmission. So to most players it would cause one to think that Dr. Wily already had the robot Masters. In the intro of the game he dispatches Pharaoh Man, Ring Man, Bright Man and Toad Man onto the city. The intro does show Dr. Wily sending Ballade out to get Mega Man. So while the plot was good and very creative it did not match the intro part of the game. Thus, I give the plot a good 8 out of 10. The plot would have had a 9 or a 10 rating if it matched the intro of the stage. Why did Capcom not have the story in the manual and in the intro of the game not match is beyond me. Oh well still a good story line though.

Graphics: 9
The graphics are your standard 8 bit game and since this is a game boy game there is no color. However unlike the past Game Boy games the graphics really improved in Mega Man IV. The sprints are so much better in this game than its Game Boy precursors. Some of the sprints in those games were awful. If you want to know what I mean go play Mega Man II for gameboy and you will see what I am talking about. I really like despite there being no color how the  backgrounds still glow. Pharaoh Man's desert stage still has that glow in the background. I can tell they are stars. Ring Man's background is a spaced theme and it is real good. I also like how Crystal Man stage glows despite there being no color. Napalms's man stage is also good especially the way the fire has a flame to it. So this game is what really made the Game Boy shine concerning Mega Man. Also as I stated the sprints are so good in this game it is hard to tell they are on 8 bit game system. The only major lag and it is so minor is the Dr. Wily space cut-scene but that is very minor it is barely noticeable. The controls in this game are very good. In fact, the controls are so smooth I had to keep reminding myself that this was an 8 bit game on a Game Boy. So aside from the lag this game had very good graphics. It is like Capcom fixed all of the first two Game Boy game's problems. In those games the sprints, graphics and controls were not very good. So this was how the first two Game Boy games should have been.

Sound: 10
Mega Man IV had some awesome sounds to it. The first sound that is noticeable is Mega Man's recoil and buster sound. Mega Man's Buster is a lot like Mega Man 5's on the regular Nintendo. In Mega Man 5 Mega Man had a very powerful buster that sounded nice. Capcom used the same sound in Mega Man IV. The way Mega Man moves when he fires it is a nice touch. I like the intro part of the game too most games have so-so intro music but not this game it rocked. Mega Man IV was the first game to have a store were you can buy power ups and the store theme sounded great. Now getting back to the sound track this game had awesome music.Pharaoh Man's music sounds just like his Mega Man 4 theme. Crystal Man, Napalm Man, Stone Man and Charge Man are my favorite tracks in this game. I also like it how the first 4 set of robot masters while fighting them has a different track than the second group of 4, that was a nice touch. Crystal Man, Napalm Man, Charge Man and Stone man battle music is the theme to Mega Man 5. It is not to often you find games that change boss battle music like this one does. Come to think of it I can't even think of another Mega Man game that does that, which makes this one unique. Ballade theme is also nicely done. The only other Mega Man Game Boy game that had just slightly better music was Mega Man V. Thus, Mega Man IV gets a perfect score on sound and music.

Addictiveness and Depth: 10
Mega Man IV really shines on its replay value and depth. The first two Game Boy games did not have good replay value. Mega Man III had much better replay value is considered the turning point in the Mega Man Game Boy collection.  Mega Man IV due to the awesome graphics, and sound is very fun to play again. I have played this game several times since I first played it. Mega Man IV also has a lot of depth there is a lot going on in this game. First of all, the player can pick up p c hips to use as currency. Mega Man IV was the first Mega Man game to have a store were you can buy power ups and items that you need to progress in the game. The item store would be seen in Mega Man V, 7, 8 and Mega Man & Bass. But this was the first game to do that and it introduced something new to the series. Also they are letters to collect in this game. The letters can be used to unlock a weapon the later ones are used for a power up. Mega Man IV shares letter collecting with Mega Man 5, 6, and 7. They are also secrets in this game. Another thing that adds depth is a power up for the Mega Man Buster can be unlocked in this game. Also this game is quite long the robot master stages are very long. The Wily stages are also long and have a lot going on in them. So this game is one that is going to take a while to beat. I really like games were you have to collect stuff to progress in the game or get power ups it just makes it more challenging. I also like how the items are well hidden a few are right in front of the player but some will require revisiting stages as they require special weapons to get.. In the second half of the Robot Masters some of them require creativity to get. So yeah this game has a lot of depth.

Difficulty: 9
This game was difficult when I first played it and guess what it still is difficult. The first thing that makes it difficult is the Mega Buster. The buster in this game is really powerful it has a recoil. The buster does a lot of damage, but if you are on the edge of a platform it can knock you off into the pits. So when you fire the Mega Man Buster allow yourself some room due to the recoil. Okay, the first two Mega Man games were difficult but in a different way. The first two Game Boy Mega Man games were difficult because of the bad graphics especially in the first game. Mega Man II was not difficult but the lag in the game and again not so great graphics made it not so fun. Mega Man III started to add difficulty. This along with Mega Man V is the most difficult ones in the Game Boy game. But it is the kind of difficult that makes beating the game rewarding as it requires skill to master. A great game should have that type of difficulty in it. The first 4 robot masters are not that difficult. Pharaoh Man is the one in the first 4 that is difficult.  Bright Man is also difficult but that is because of his cheap shots. The second group of 4 their stages want to make you scream esp Crystal Man's stage. In the Crystal Man's stage you have to deal with the falling Crystals, the collapsing walls & Ceiling and enemies as well as Crystal Man himself. In the Napalm Man's Stage there are killer drills and death fire to deal with than their is Napalm man himself. Stone Man's stage is just so long. Ballade is a nightmare he is fast and has a lot of attacks. Of all Mega Man Game Boy games that had Mega Man killers in them. Ballade was the one that gave me the most trouble, I guess that is also what makes him my favorite Mega Man killer, plus what he does at the end of the game is touching. The Wily stages I have also found to be difficult. The thing that bumps up the difficulty is the enemy placement. A lot of the stages have a lot of enemies that want to distract you, force you to charge and fall to your doom, knock you into the pits or spikes, and not to mention a lot of them just want to gang up on you. The only thing that keeps Mega Man IV from getting a perfect rating on difficulty is the fact that the first set of robot masters (not including Pharaoh Man oh and Bright Man) are not difficult to beat. The other group of 4, ballade and Dr. Wily make this a tough game. Thus, I give the difficulty of this game a solid and hard 9 out of 10.

Overall: 9.5
Mega Man Iv is a great game it plays a lot like Mega Man 4 and 5 for the NES. I really enjoyed this game it is one of my all time favorites along with Mega Man V, 7, 3 and 4. I have played this game several times and I never get tired of it. It is nice having good graphics for a Game Boy game, the sound is awesome and the difficulty and depth are also good in this game. I like it how this is the first game players can use p chips to buy powerful items. Mega Man III for Game Boy was a good game but had just a few things missing. Mega Man IV set the bar for Game Boy games. Thankfully Capcom made one last Game Boy Game as good as this one in the Mega Man line and that was Mega Man V.  The only thing is I wish this one could have been done in color with a Super Game Boy just like Mega Man 5 could have been done. The graphics would have been beyond perfect if that was the case. I highly recommend Mega Man IV. If this is your first time playing a Mega Man game on the Game Boy do not start with I and II. I think III is a good starter for Game Boy Mega Man players, who are playing Mega Man for the first time to go with III. But if you want to be blown away with a great Game Boy game than pick up Mega Man IV or V. Overall I give Mega Man IV a good rating of 9.5. The only other Mega Man game for game boy that is slightly better is Mega Man V. So to sum it up, Mega Man IV is a great game, it is fun to play has great graphics, sound, depth and difficulty. Pick up this game and have fun you will not regret it. Excuse me while I get back to playing this great game
