Finish this Network + Certification. Become Cisco CCNA certified; Microsoft MCSA certified; start re-learning and self studying math up to algebra II / trig / pre-calc. Im moving to NY to live with the in-laws. Hopefully get a helpdesk or support (jr IT role) job. Plan is to get situated first. I need 12 consecutive months as a NY resident for any decent financial aid for starting school again -going for undergrad.

I have recently taken an interest in looking at different setups on various technology, & I.T. -related websites of people running their own Data/Network Cabling in their own homes/ living spaces. There are many ways to set it up like a structured wiring closet or home networking closet. There are wall-mounted box enclosures with Ventilation or traditional mounted racks for wiring, cable management and also patch panels. Essentially you run a data cable (Ethernet Cat5a-Cat6)out to each room where you'd like an ethernet port in the wall of each bedroom, etc.

I am wondering if anyone has ever done a home project and ran there own cables be it for Internet/Ethernet, or Coaxial cable for TV's, or even audio cables. I'd like to ideally run CAt6 statndard cables since provide fastest through-put, and have majority of my devices in my home connected to internet via hard-wired ethernet cables to the wall/ into Switch or Routers. Since wired is more reliable and provides a solid transmission medium vs WiFi. I'd still have WiFi Access Points, or a SOHO router, maybe even a Wifi Repeater/ Range extender depending on the type of materials in the walls, or size. Wifi would only be for Mobile devices, laptops, tablets, phones, or guest WiFi.

Anybody have any experience, thoughts, or ideas?

Greetings everyone. I am writing this today because I have undergone a mission this year to become certified to improve my knowledge base, but also to better position for prospective employment. As of March 2017 I have become CompTIA Security + certified, and as of Sept.2017 I am now A+ certified!!! Purpose of this thread is to share your experiences, study habits and discuss if you have pursued any of the various CompTIA certifications in the field of I.T.

The Network+ is what I am going for next, not sure if I'll meet my self proposed deadline of sitting for the Net+ exam by the end of Dec2017, but it is a broad umbrella of material that doesn't go into to much depth due to being an entry level cert.

I have recently looked into study groups and it directed me to Discord. What my original interest was an all in one place to be able to talk to other people and have groups where you can update and share work, ask Questions, things of that sort. Some major Online Collaboration Software has really been trending in tech circles online (more so for programmers) like Slack, Asana, HipChat. I have only ever tried Slack and now Discord because of studying for a certification and that's what they chose to you. I like the ability to easily group and team message people (pretty much just like IRC / instant messengers) but with added features and file sharing / support.

Anyone have any experience or comments?

I am wondering if anyone has any experience using Game Creation Software. Like Dark Basic Pro, Game Guru, RPG Maker, GameMaker, or even UnrealEngine or Unity?
I have only ever attempted to try my hand with DarkBasic Pro, and Game Guru. I have on my computer UnrealEngine, RPG Maker VX Ace (from Steam) and Game Maker but have note yet messed around with it.

Feel free to describe your experience, or even areas of shortcomings, like how slow or issues with interface, tools, or any projects you have worked on.

Was that for PS4? I know you had the PS3 before. I still haven't gotten a new console. There is a lot of nice remakes, and new games, in addition to some older game series seeing new entries. Mass effect is one I have long been a fan of the story, and the world they thought of. good story line, well thought out.

[This won't be as thought out as I intended it to be until further editing]

I have recently taken interest in building a home computer / server setup for learning purposes and tinkering. I mean I already setup my own SOHO router / modem from my ISP and we have 2 computers. My next intention is to build a more powerful dedicated rig for gaming/ VM labs. Or a dedicated Home server with a Server OS. My question is what sort of experience do you have in a Home setup for computers, servers, networking or something as simple as a dedicated PC for media sharing & streaming? I want to pick up an older/ secondhand newer Lenovo thinkpad as a dedicated Linux PC client for messing around as well. I'm running Windows 10 Pro on my MSI laptop.

-Other things I have read people have is either a Media Server PC, or a Server/ Pc dedicated to storage for the whole home / files (i.e. Music, Games, Movies, etc). Please share what you have as a setup!

Wow congratulations! That's really motivating. All it takes is some inner will power to make a step in a different direction. As long you're taking a step a day, you can't go wrong since you will eventually get to your destination! (goal) I am actually going to share this sentiment with my wife. She is really self-conscious, and I try to always lift her mood and be positive, changes don't happen overnight
