mario102 : It's a great story that teaches girls they don't need a man to empower them and they can have relationships with other females and not be in competition with each other.  I think that's wonderful as the point of view of a father with a young daughter.

And good for the business who made all that money.  People can decide what they want to spend their money on and they chose Frozen.  That's no different than going nuts and buying all the Pokemon games over and over and over.

Don't worry about what other people enjoy.  Worry about enjoying what you enjoy.  If you don't like Frozen, don't think about it, don't watch it, don't hum the tunes.  You'd be better served by not creating a thread to talk about it.

janus :  "While some of these activities involve government regulation.."

Stop right there.  That means anarchy doesn't exist.  People bartering at a farmers' market is capitalism, not anarchy.  Just because the price change doesn't mean anarchy rules.  The dollars have a fixed value as backed by either gold or the 'good trust of the American people,' the roads constructed to get farmers to their selling locations were build by tax dollars and maintained by government entities.... I could go on and on.

Simply using currency bring government into the picture, hence "not anarchy."

Also, the market drives those surgeons to work more to get more money.  They can work 9-5 if they want but they won't pay off their student loans, usually funded by either government entities or groups working under federal regulation to loan money.  How do these institutions have the funds to pay for medical school?  Banks or other loaning vehicles, backed by federal regulations so people can all bring their money together in investment.  Hospitals, universities (public or private), and the infrastructure made possible all comes from government regulation.

True anarchy would probably lead to a small, simple agrarian society where nothing happens.  We wouldn't have the internet or any other amenities because it's not in anyone's interest to develop something like that.  How do you barter for a car?

It's all capitalism.  Nothing you mentioned was anarchy.

People age, grow old, and change.  Some people decide they want something different and they do not want their regular life.  I have been married with my wife for 9 years.  We have been in a relationship for 16 years.  We are still on the same path together and we love each other.  We are in our early 30s.

Relationships are good if people grow old and still like the same things.  Relationships are bad if people like different things.

I write this to be translated into another language.  I hope it makes sense.

If the directions are to go to the church, you go to the church.  A year and a half can change things and you may take away something new or talk to someone new or have a new experience.  You're also different compared to 1.5 years ago and maybe the experience will be different and exciting and new.

If he assigns and makes attendance mandatory, it's mandatory.  You go.  I have to go to meetings and places again and again and I don't like it but it's the directions for my job.

Go, take notes, do the thing again, and write a good paper on it.  You can even influence your grade by saying, "The last time I was there I noticed A, B, and C.  This time I saw it differently.  I saw D, E, and F."

That would bump your grade nicely.  It's always dangerous to upset a teacher.  It's always safe to pump up their egos.  It's called playing the game.

TristanTehGamer1 : I know this is important because I counted the word "atheist" eight different times in your opening statement.

Okay, you believe there is no God.  There's nothing out there but humans and probably some aliens.  And when we die, that's it.  There is nothingness and there you go.

That's fine and dandy.  You can believe what ever you want as long as you are a fundamentally good person.  There are Christians who are mean as all get out and they're not nice.  Jesus walked around and told people to love one another and many of today's Christians don't follow that too well.

I don't have any particular religion I follow aggressively.  I work at a YMCA and the "C" stands for Christian but we have atheists, Muslims, Jews, and every other religion and non-religion you can imagine.

Here's the deal.  If your friends would ostracize someone based only on their belief system, those aren't very good friends.  They're not good people.  Maybe you have to find a new group, a new way, or go it alone if your belief system is so important as to go against the grain.

It's not easy with something as important to religion.  It's not like you enjoy the color orange more than green and everyone else likes green.  Even sports aren't as serious as religious differences.

Find your way and enjoy your life.  If people ignore you or hate you because you don't believe in their God, they aren't good people.  You don't want to be around them anyway.

gokulikescheese : Since we have air conditioning and no one works the fields as much as they used to in the United States, I think having a format like this would work very well.

3 weeks of Monday through Friday school every month.  One week completely off every month.

That's a great way for kids to stay engaged in school, continue learning, but get breaks and weeks for rest throughout the year.  The real world doesn't operate the way school does and I see college kids get real jobs and totally fizz out because they are expecting to take the summer off.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way.  You still have to contribute.

The only negative would be changing how parents do their vacations and their child watch for the weeks the kids are off.  Maybe the whole United States takes over and some schools get certain weeks off, other schools get other weeks off, and people can keep working while making sure their kids are safe.

DJ2536 : Do you want to bet Viz on them overcoming the odds?

zanderlex :  I also think the Aztecs have a great inside-outside game and they'll knock out St. John's in short order.

I'm a Michigan State guy and i know they'll get by Georgia and probably get stomped by UVA.  They lost that heartbreaker against Wisconsin and they came back from losing 16 to then seeded #8 Maryland.

Izzo knows what he's doing in March.  He's Mr. March and they may get sneaky and win some more games.  But I think they lose in the second round.

Who does everyone have for their final four?

They talk about things that are possible but will never happen in sports.  I don't think a #16 seed will ever beat a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Is there anyone who thinks this will ever happen?  Or is it so outlandish we shouldn't even talk about it?

Everyone on the internet is fake to me.  It's all a game and if someone takes me seriously and maybe improves their lives, good for them.  Otherwise none of this is really real.  It's a shame.  I go outside and I see real people and there you go.

I'm in the same boat with you.

The internet can be a great place to meet people because it is a free flow of ideas and you can find people who like very specific things just the way you like very specific things.  That way you can find new things to talk about and build relationships.

It's all about the words.  I think people eventually decide to call, Skype, or meet face to face after they decide they like each other enough online.  Online allows a personality to shine through.

I don't know how to say this without bragging but I'll try.  I take a lot of pride in all my work, even as a kid, and I never got low grades.  I wasn't the best or the smartest guy in the room but I put a lot of effort into doing everything as best I could.  I have no idea what it is like to be in last place with grades.  I wasn't in the fancy advanced classes so there were always folks who didn't do as well as me.

I'm sure I'd be embarassed that I failed the teacher and I didn't do as well as I could have if I were in last place.

Or if it were a curve and I got 85% but I was last?  That's okay.

The original question asked if feminism is necessary.

Considering feminism is defined as a collection of theories, movements, and ideologies that define, establish, and achieve political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women.

Those of you who are busy saying feminists are terrible people are grouping an entire culture together.  It's like saying all Americans own guns and ride horses.  Or all Koreans are good at math.  Or all Germans are serious.

You're categorizing an entire group of people and that's not fair to them.

Secondly, if you think women don't need to be equal to men socially, economically, politically, or personally, then you're a terrible person because you think they are less important than men.

Feminism means women are treated equally to men.  It means no more and no less.  Different people have different ways to get there and some aren't doing it right or fairly.  The idea itself is to advance men and women together and find equal footing for everyone.

If any of you really feel women shouldn't be equal to men..... well, I can't fathom it.  I feel bad for your mothers, sister, girlfriends, and all the females you know.

Business?  Work?  Good for you.  I hope you're having fun and enjoying what you're doing.  Usually when people are pulled away from an online website and a community, they're doing something they really enjoy and they're learning while they're doing it.

Go out there, go make things happen, go control your destiny.

Does anyone pay attention to economics?  The Japanese are busy buying our stuff while we buy theirs.  If we stop purchasing all their stuff, we don't export.  And the U.S. exports a lot.

We also don't have perfect everything because it's too expensive.  I need a car that gets me from Point A to Point B.  I don't need plush leather interior, heated cup holders, perfect anything.  It's a tool like any other tool.  Now, what is the cost, adjusted for inflation, between those cars and these cars? Cars are lot less expensive.  We don't need the fancy stuff and we don't have to pay for it.

There is "perfect" "high value" everything out there.  If you don't like the Ford Fusion, go get a BMW.  You can also buy a $15 toothbrush with minimum torque and perfect handling.

It's options.  I have the option to buy inexpensive stuff because of my tastes and preferences.  I don't have to have a gourmet hot dog that costs $11.  I can get a pack of Ballpark Franks and pay only a few bucks.  I don't have to get a $40 steak every time I go out to eat.  I can get a burger at McDonalds for a lot less.

Cars?  Options.  Clothes? Options.  I can stay at a Hotel 6 that has a bed and a shower and no other amenities.  It's cheaper than the Hilton.

Why pay such high rates when you don't need the luxury?  Or you can't afford it.  I imagine a poor family from somewhere in the hills of Kentucky buying the best of everything.

That makes no sense.

Super Mega Man 568 :  I'll try this once and I'm not confident it will work.  Here we go.

You're a 13 year old kid and you don't yet realize the long reaching consequences of what you're doing right now.  I'm interested to see what kind of action any of the mods take with you actively threatening me.  I don't want you to get banned but you should realize saying something like this is a bad idea.  You tell enough people you are armed and you'll run into someone who actually is and they aren't afraid to shoot (or shoot back).  There is no good result from this.

Second, I was in the Marines for six years.  America is pretty good at cranking out warriors and weapons and I did that for a while in the infantry.  You may have a gun but that doesn't mean anything.  I have seen what it's like to kill people and it's the ugliest thing anyone can do to someone else.  Violence is the worst thing humans do to each other.

Third, anger is a simple emotion and a lot of people understand it.  It's also not a very manly emotion.  I assume you're male and real men control their emotions and funnel those emotions into positive behaviors to help others.  Shooting people does nothing helpful.

Maybe you'll read this and take it under consideration.  Maybe you won't.  Maybe you'll get banned.  Maybe not.  But when you walk around with such a negative attitude, of course things aren't going to fall into place.  I wonder if you're the kind of guy that blames everyone else, circumstance, and your environment for everything that goes wrong.  Those folks don't succeed in life, even if their parents are rich and they think they're smart.

I hope the best for you.  You're a kid so there's time to learn and turn this all around.

Think about it.

Super Mega Man 568 : "If one more person blah blah, I'm going to kill someone?"  Jesus, dude, you got some anger issues, huh?

The world is sexist against women.  I wrote it here and I even said it out loud in my kitchen eating breakfast.

Okay, go kill someone.  I'm waiting.

You shouldn't say things if you're not going to back them up or they're not true.

Is feminism necessary?

Yes, but it needs a different name.  The original objective of feminism is equality between men and women.  If you think men and women are equal in today's society, or if you think women are treated equally to men in social, political, and business settings, you don't do much reading.

Feminism will be rendered obsolete when sexual violence against women stops.

Feminism will be rendered obsolete when the U.S. political spectrum is more balanced.  Currently, women make up just over 51% of the population but around 21% of political offices.  That doesn't show much balance and representation.

I'll go on but I know where you guys from.  I was young once and I felt the same way.  After 30+ years experience on earth, I realize that things do suck more for women than for men.  Even in the U.S.

A massive number of feminists compound the problem.  These women are similar to Jihadists who corrupt the original message of Islam and twist it to be violent.  Some women who support feminism feel women can only gain advantage at the expense of men.  They believe it is a zero-sum game.  They are the ones who make feminism look bad.

Look past those women and educate yourselves more on what feminism should be.  Then come back and we'll talk.

Generally, solving anything with your fists is the worst, weakest, dumbest way to do things.  You have conflict and you need to resolve it?  Hit someone?

Do you think that's how things work in the real world?  You can't walk around at a job somewhere and fight someone because they disagree with you.  You should try to find other ways to deal with things.  While you're walking around punching people, you're building a real big group who doesn't like you one bit.  And you'll end up squaring off with someone bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled, and more aggressive.  Or you get jumped and beat up.

Violence isn't something to be proud of.  Show me the part in the Bible where Jesus said, "Deal with anger by hitting other people."  You sound like you're a bully when you automatically resort to fists.

So, she has some options.  If she is a self-proclaimed victim, then she has the mentality that she can never win this or be successful.  There's no sense in trying because she'll go all Eeyore (from Winnie the Pooh) on you and say, "Well, I knew nothing would work anyway."

Tell her these things:

1.  Ask her teammates on the basketball team to teach her.  Tell them they're better then she is and they can help her improve.  If she goes to them for help, there's a teacher/student relationship and they see her as a project, not someone who's dragging the team down.  If the cold-hearted chicks say no, she can leave and find a new sport.  She doesn't have to to accept attacks but she can make the switch and leave the environment.

How does she communicate?  Maybe she can start something where kids teach her signs if she speaks ASL and she can get them communicating with her.  Or do you mean "shy" when you say "mute"?

Outside the basketball thing, she can stop telling everyone in sight that she's a lesbian.  It sets her a part and invites criticism.  She can be a lesbian, that's fine, but if she's getting bullied, maybe she should keep that info to herself.

She can also start working on her fitness if she's "bulky."  I read bulky to mean fat.  She can educate herself on healthy eating and more exercise and make some changes to improve herself.

Here's the point: If you don't like something, make a change.  Have her write down what she likes about herself and what she doesn't like.  Have her focus and develop on the things she likes and either alter or quit the things she doesn't like.

Here's the trouble with all of this:  You're lumping entire groups of people together without realizing a few fundamentally important things.  The first thing you're skipping is the fact that these are all people.  They're just people, man, and all they want is to be happy and enjoy their lives, just like you.

You posted an thread (a rant?) about how all atheists are too sensitive and take offense over prayer at a meal.  Now you say all non-straight people, in whatever disgusting form they come in, are all too sensitive too.

When you lump entire groups together, you start sounding sexist, racist, homophobic, and worse.

You ask for a rational conversation but when your mind is closed to different ideas, there's no sense in even having a dialogue.  I'm pretty sure Jesus walked around a few thousand years ago and told people to love one another, not call each other names, and if you don't grasp that basic tenant of Christianity, you should reexamine yourself before you start making all these assumptions about entire populations.

There are a lot of nice people who don't consider themselves strictly heterosexual.  And they're a generally welcoming bunch.  They're nurses, firefighters, police, soldiers, and they help others.  Some are good, some are not good, but all are people.  Recognize that and maybe there's a discussion.

Most importantly, you do have the right to express your opinion and you can say things and not worry about walking on eggshells.  But ask yourself if you have to say them?  What's the importance of walking around and telling "those people" how terrible they are?

Knowledge is knowing something.

Wisdom is knowing when not to say it.

Everyone is different.  It doesn't matter if you eat before or after as long as you're eating at some point.  If you know strenuous exercise is coming up, most folks eat about 2 hours before and nothing heavy.  Drink water and stay hydrated.  That's the important part.  The food thing doesn't come in unless you're really doing some heavy work, like running seven miles or more or doing 90 minutes of heavy cardio or weight lifting.

Most work outs won't require refueling between or immediately after exercise.  Just have some water.  You'll be fine and that'll do most of the work for you.  If you experiment, you'll figure out what you like the most.
