I'm sure everyone here has bombed a quiz or a test or some assignment at least once in their school "career". If it was a big test, you probably wanted to take it again to get a better grade, but you might have been denied another chance to take it. Even though I'm only 15 and stuff, I still have had a lot of experience with retests and not being able to retest or seeing my friends have the same problem.

I have a little mixed view on this. On one hand, retests basically give no value to all of the kids who did well on the assignment the first time. It's basically telling them "we're not going to reward you for (maybe) studying harder than the other kids". Second chances are also not as prevalent in the workforce, so it kinda "prepares" you for life beyond school.

With that being said, I lean towards the other side in this argument. I think retesting (provided there is some sort of redemption or remediation) is good. I think that learning the material is more important than the score you get. I feel like the number that you get from your grade is more valuable than the actual knowledge you take in, which is dumb, in my opinion. You go to school and take classes to learn the material, not to worry about a number value attached to it. Don't get me wrong, grades are important, to an extent, but learning the material should be prioritized. The more times you do something, the better the chances of it actually sticking in your brain.

What's your opinion on this? Do you think second chances on assignments are good or bad?

At my school you can basically take a test or quiz as many times as you need until you pass it. It's pretty great xp.

Their way of thinking is that they're trying to have you learn the material- if you understand it, then they're benefiting from it. And maybe you just had a bad day or were absent for a few days, so that's why you bombed it. And the quiz/test grade improving is one way of testing whether you learned the material or not.

As for the argument against it, I don't see what's unfair about it if anyone can retake it. Maybe the smart kid wants to do a little better to give them an edge in the class so they retake the quiz too.

So I guess I'm for it.

Redemption and a second chance is not for everyone.

Only the humble, and the representative of heart. Or at least those who are willing to try better. Some people on the other hand don't deserve a second chance or otherwise.

I don't know. . . I'll be honest with you. I don't think School is all that great. You have to want to have it to be good at it, and for it to have any long lasting benefit. Otherwise, you'll find yourself on the popular game show "Are you smarter than a fifth greater" Struggling to remember the 14th king of France cause it has almost no bearing on your every day to day life.

However, I do think that education has a place, but it's better passed down in the form of stories, non fictitious books or even learning things as you choose your career. I have a lot of gripes with the education system, more than I can count.

But when it comes to the question of second chances, I will tell you this.

On the worksite, I've found you can get plenty of second chances- in fact. You will make PLENTY of mistakes as you're learning a trade (Again, a trade your school taught you NOTHING about) and if your boss has a short temper, you're probably going to make him angry.

But.

Everyone under (And often times above!) the age of 30 is going to be like that, and Bosses KNOW it. There are so many things you have to learn in construction, roofing (my most longstanding occupations) That you're there so much to work as you are to learn.

Learn valuable skills for the rest of your life and keeping you and your family fed.

You will make mistakes, and so long they weren't out of utter stupidity, you will probably be kept around. Some bosses are more merciful than others. . . Some are less. It's pretty straightforward.

As for tests, the way I see school? In the end, you'll only remember what's important to you. I had a taste for academic abilities and knowledge. I loved my science. I loved my history. I loved my reading. . . till the made me write, because. . . well, I found the writing of articles boring. (Which is strange, look at me now!)

But that was BEFORE I was reading many good stories and had watched some of the cleaner animes. From video games, a big imagination and lots of historical, religious and political head knowledge. My new hobby grew and that's how I got here today.

In the end school is worthless without a zeal for it. If you don't care, you won't remember it. It'll be gone by the time you're twenty three. That's why it's hard for me to comment on how effective something is. . . when it's not exactly effective to begin with. That's all I have to say.

Just remember in life that you will make a ton of SMALL mistakes. That's okay. And you will need to be patient when teaching anyone anything new. The big thing is to not be an idiot, do what's right, don't get too hasty and avoid the BIG mistakes. Then you should be easy to deal with and well on your way. That's my take on it.

I think its good if it helps out the person that needs to redo work. I think grades are important, but not as much as the learning see I prefer to take in the knowledge of learning what I need to do right. When you do that the more you know the more things you learn. You might not even know if you gained enough knowledge of something you do the work,  and end up passing without even trying. There are some fail because they don't take the time to learn what they need, or forgot to do what needs to be done. Not everyone has to agree with something as this. But, as long as the other understands their point, then good. Because that's what matters more.

Oh, boy do I have an opinion on this. I'm not very fond of tests in the traditional sense at all. They can act as a divide between people who worked hard and got less and people who worked hard and got more. It acts as a sort of mirror to the kind of selfish economy we have here in America. If you asked me if I believe in Communism, I say yes! But not the kind of Communism that is commonly thought about. My idea of a perfect society is everyone willingly pitching in in the service of equality. No force of government. No individualistic tendencies. Every person serves the whole, and everyone is amply rewarded. Everyone grows.

Instead, here we have an economy that works. But it works to preserve a perverted order. Not everyone prospers equally under the arm of the law. Rich people are free to stash away their wealth and use it selfishly. Even great sums and great quantities of food can be held back without the law doing anything or little about it. There's allowing someone to become rich, then there's allowing someone to walk away with tons of benefits that should go to someone else. That is what the law allows right now. It's not right. It's fine for someone to become rich, but they should be seeking that for others, too. I know in many regards in this, I've failed. But I certainly believe in second chances. I suppose in this sense, the law succeeds. But the law is what we make of it. And too few people are making the best of it. In this sense, I believe in second chances for everyone. But fourth chances? Four hundred and ninety oneth chances? Depends on the circumstance. Some people need to have what they have taken away so that they can become humble. Even me sometimes.

I only had to retest once and it saved my butt and taught me a valuable lesson: take tests and school seriously.

I'm in favor of them under certain conditions: I think they should be given if you meet certain criteria such as studying the failed content all over again. And though I do see why you might feel cheated if you passed the first time, I still think it's best to give everyone a chance and instead of saying "oh you failed. Too bad." to say "Hey, get up and try again. Don't give up, just try harder". Redemption is something we need more of in the world I think.

So yeah retests are good but I think they should be punative in the sense of not just handing the test back and giving a retry, but by making you study all over again so you can learn to pay more attention.

I don't go to school, but I will say that it's more important about learning than doing well on a test. Yes, I know that people use tests as a way to tell how much you've learned, but frankly I don't really care. If you fail the test, I do think you should have to retake it until you can do it right. Like I said, it's about knowledge and it's smart to ensure your knowledge regardless of circumstances.

Well... I think being able to receive second chances for something really depends on the situation. What level of school are we talking about and would the assignment kill someone if we botched it? If this is about grade school or high school, then yes, I think giving second chances occasionally might help, as long as people are learning not to mess up again. However, once you get to college or university level, you are essentially preparing for the workforce. If you don't prepare in advance or don't know what you're doing by the time you get to the operating table, there's a chance someone could lose their life because for some serious matters like that, sometimes there are no second chances.

Well,if you know you have a test, then you must prepare. But the actual learning and being able to put the material into practice counts more. I would think that offering a retest is only good if the majority of the class did not do well. If you did not do well, then you are at fault here. But if more than half the class fails, then something needs to be done.

If one cannot use what they have learned into practice, they will have a tough time in school and in life.

Some schools may make you repeat your grade if you bomb a lot of tests but the best part is, if you saw the correct answers, you can memorize them and use them for the next year if it's the same. And this will make post numeral 100 for the day.

I've always thought of school as something meant to teach us how to handle certain things in life, and not so much the material, despite doubting that outcome was actually intentional.

What I mean is, school teaches us how to handle others in social situations, how to prepare and be ready for evaluations of our performance in various aspects, and what kind of a person we want to be / what kind of people to surround ourselves with. Outside of the most basic English (or your own nation's language) and Math, hardly anything taught up through High School is actually used practically in our daily lives. I graduated about 6-7 years ago, and I can honestly say about 90% of the material holds no value to me at this point.

So, what I'm getting at is, kids actually shouldn't get a second chance to take tests or do assignments. Once school is over, life isn't that forgiving, be it work, paying bills, etc. Letting them try and try again is teaching them it's ok to fail, because they could always just do better later on. Now, I'm all for giving kids another chance under certain circumstances, but that's for obvious reasons. I just think we should teach them to be responsible early on, and not wait until they're full grown adults to develop the habits of being prepared for things like this. The younger you are, the easier it is to pick up new things and develop habits. I'm not saying it should be evenly harsh for all ages, but it should definitely increase expectations as the kids grow older. Once in High School, kids shouldn't be allowed to just try and try again until they get it right, that's not how life works, and we shouldn't be teaching them that it works that way.

I'm not trying to sound like a grumpy old man or anything, I just think this would be better for the kids overall

I think allowing second chances with these is a good thing. Think of it this way. No matter what happens in the moment, you will move on, if you can't retake a test now and fail the class and have to take the class again, you will basically take the test again but you wouldn't study again for a whole year. Giving a second chance is also a second chance to study right now.
