So sometimes you start playing a game and find yourself really enjoying it. You keep playing it to see where it'll go next and then you get to a certain part or segment... That makes you want to throw the game out the window.  Often painstakingly getting through because you've otherwise enjoyed the game and you convince yourself it'll get better. An infamous example of this for many is the water temple in Ocarina of Time (or really most zelda games). What examples of this have you encountered in games you otherwise enjoyed or at least enjoyed up until that point? Did you get through it or did it cause you to quit playing the game?

Zlinqxthecooluser™ :

Well, I think for me it would be from Ocarina of time. Not the Water Temple though, I could handle that without getting frustrated. What I hated was. . . the forced great fairy fountain visits.

No, really, the game is rated E 10+, and then. . . you find these, near naked giant ladies with magical powers covered in nothing but vines. . . and really small leaves.

Ugh, the less I think about that the better.

Best part? They look so blockey and the makeup on their eye make them look SO Ugly, that it doesn't really trigger you. . . it's just. . . . really terribly awkward. . . and probably a good thing to keep your mom from seeing.

Thanks dad for not panicking and actually playing the game with us. Good times.

Another example would be Flurrie from Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. I was creeped out by her and never used her unless necessary. The scene where she drowns Mario in kisses is particularly hideous, but it's not the only kiss scene in the game that get's a little. . .

o_0

At any rate it's mostly bad writing or just plain stupid character choices that get me irked. I don't complain about games that much and generally love a challenge. X-COM had me raging for a while though. Why is RNG so prominent in thinking and tactical games? I should probably play RTS games instead. I wish I knew more good ones I could enjoy.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

There was this specific track in GT6 which is horrible, both in layout and for what it represents, so I totally disliked having to do an endurance challenge there. However, as you say, better things could be under way, and it turned out to be that way.

In Trackmania Turbo, I've also had to deal with stupid track configurations or sections where mistakes were costly. One of the reasons why I took a break from that game is because of a certain event that was totally stupid: countless turbo pads and ALL of them immediately followed either by a very tight turn or an "engine-off" zone, which totally destroys the point of having a turbo pad to begin with.

Project CARS isn't free of unenjoyable moments. Beyond the glitches, is the disproportioned amount of championships and events happening in UK circuits only instead of the whole world. There are world tracks which I still have to touch while I've raced +30 times in UK tracks. Why adding so many circuits if in the end you're mainly using five?

Hm...Well, one for me was certainly in this game called Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. Despite being low budget, the game was actually really enjoyable, and then came this one mission where they introduced a boss. You see, a big part of the game were these enemies called 'drones,' which took half damage and did alot of it, and eventually you get your own two drones. The next mission, you face this 'Mega Drone,' which had every weapon imaginable and a ridiculous amount of HP. That, along with the ungodly number of enemies around it, made that mission painstakingly difficult.

Funny enough, my best other example (besides the aforementioned water temple, gah. I hated that place in Ocarina of Time), would have to be in Minecraft. I had made myself a really, really, really nice looking village with a massive clearing in the middle where I planned to build my castle. Once I started (and it was a big castle), I finished like one wall before each window became a grind to complete. At that point, I decided to take a break and build other stuff, but I always saw that castle wall and felt like I was procrastinating, until at some point the world actually crashed and I lost everything.

I was pretty upset about it, since it's the second time that's happened to one of my worlds, but I wasn't going to finish that thing any time soon, so...yeah.

The random encounters in Final Fantasy Tactics for the PlayStation get really, really old after a while, especially when you're trying to get side missions done and there's no way to flee or otherwise avoid the fight. It's partially why I haven't played it in so long.

Sword legion : I actually had an idea (but will likely never have the skill) to start a fan project to do a complete rebuild of Ocarina of Time from the ground up for the Dreamcast and make the graphics a whole lot better. I wanted to take each of the Great Fairies and make them a little more human-like and womanly. Still suggestive, but not overly revealing, and I wanted to have a certain level of individuality among each of them, similar to that of Din, Nayru and Farore.

Protecting the helpless dude missions in general really tick me off, but those missions in Transformers Devastation are really annoying!
You have to protect Wheeljack from waves of enemies, but since you can only hit one at a time, they'll just ignore you and go straight for him.And there are always at least five at a time and he has a tiny amount of health. So, yeah not fun.

Another one would be the cannon section in Vortex's stage in Fall of cybertron.I've gotten pretty good at it now, but on your first time, or at higher difficulties, it
will bomb the heck out of you. That, and the Megatron arena brawl. Those of you who've played it will know what I mean.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was almost a perfect game. One of the best in the series. The 2 problems I had with it though, the incredibly long load/install times and the forced vehicle sections. If I wanted to play a rail shooter, I woulda played one.I dunno why they decided to add those...

EX Palen :
Project Cars was the only game I ever got refunded on steam. It wasn't fun at all to me because it seemed like the simulation aspects only applied to the player(s). The AI was able to do anything it wanted and always drove in a set drive line, regardless of what was in its way. In less than 2 hours of play, there are countless times I was pushed off the track and got a "track cut" penalty.

Big one for me is grinding on pretty much any RPG ever (besides Undertale). I try to avoid grinding, but if I feel underleveled, then yeah I go back and grind some more.

I don't know if this counts but I am going to give it a shot of what I have to say. I think final fantasy x-2. Correct me if I am wrong about this. But what killed it for me was the Cactuar Nation sidequest anyone who remembers well. Knows that to have a 100% ending for the game you had to do everything, and that kind of put me off. Because there were most annoying parts to that, and there was other things I can't remember. But in the game you had to do all in order to fit that in to get all the good ending parts. :/

The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorer Games are fantastic. It had great gameplay and one hell of a story which made me cry a lot at the ending, and that's so far been one of a select few to make me actually cry at anything, an impressive feat and deservedly so. The characters were well written, the plot twists were surprising and unexpected the first time and replaying it still gives me a sense of joy. The music too is also incredible with a number of excellent soundtracks.

HOWEVER, there is one moment that absolutely infuriates every Explorers player and that is the Perfect Apples Incident. Even bringing this up will result in face palms from everyone around because of how frustrating it is, especially with one of the characters involved. Chatot is annoying, loud and more or less abuses his position with a smug grin on his face but in this moment he is just intolerable to the point where you want to break something (preferably his beak).

Spoilers below for the story if anyone wants to read it.

Spoiler:
It involves getting an item called the Perfect Apple for the Guildmaster Wigglytuff, who is a bit cuckoo but easily one of the nicest characters in the game (unless he's going to cry by using Hyper Voice). They are found in Apple Woods but at the end of it you face the antagonistic Team Skull who planned this and have eaten every Perfect Apple at the end. So after a cutscene with them they knock you out.

The worst part of it is what happens afterwards though, you report back to the guild and Chatot flies into a rage but also provokes the Guildmaster and laughs at him, naturally Wigglytuff begins crying and Chatot says that he is going to shout really loud (use Hyper Voice). And then Team Skull intervene and present a Perfect Apple to stop him just as he's about to explode. Not only is it horrible because of the fact you don't get to explain why you weren't able to get any (which would have made things A LOT easier), but did I forget to mention that an expedition was coming up shortly as well? Chatot doesn't apparently find it convenient that Team Skull showed up with exactly one Perfect Apple.

Vanelan : Yeah, that's annoying as well. It's specially troublesome in open-wheel races, because accidents and broken suspensions are so easy to happen with that mindset of theirs. They aren't shown blue flags to let the player pass in qualifying either, while the player can get a severe punishment for ignoring them.

I understand how an average player would get rid of that game, but I'm above average and I've found the two secrets around it. The first one is the inconsistency of the AI at scoring points, so all you need is to qualify well, keep calm during the race and try overtaking when it's fully safe. The second is the settings of the car, it isn't that hard to make a superior car even at high difficulty levels (I easily won at 99 just with a change in top speed).

I really wish the so-leaked sequel is finally done so they can solve these issues. Knowing how much they care about player's opinion, I'm sure they will hear us out.

I got really far in Vanquish one day until there was a fight against some robot that used parts around it as a sort of armor.  When you shot all of the parts off of it, it was just two robotic legs with a red orb on top running around.  Eventually I was able to kill it and enjoyed the game for a bit longer.  Then they decided to make me fight two of those stupid things at once.  I never finished Vanquish after that.

There's always "that one boss" in pretty much every RPG, but Megaman X Command Mission's Rafflesian and the tails clan are just impossible.

With the Tails clan it's find of understandable since they're the bonus end-game bosses, but Rafflesian is not only a normal in-game secret boss, but she has to be beaten to unlock one of the two secret armors, so you pretty much have to get the other one to have a chance against her.So, it's not fun.Not very fun at all.

There was a part in Final Fantasy X when you had to watch a lengthy cutscene to get to a battle against the green-colored dude who was set to marry Yuna. Guido or something like that. I'm too lazy to go and actually look it up and I'm certain someone will come in and reply with the correct name. Here's your chance for another post for Tour de Vizzed!

Anyway, that game never had the "Skip Cut Scene" option in it and I remember having to sit there for almost five minutes to take a crack at that guy.

Was it Seymour? Yeah, Seymour! I remembered.

And it was a tough battle. I don't think I respected him enough to be really built up and ready to go so I died on a few occasions. Each time I went after him again, I died, I got frustrated, and I had to watch that stupid cut scene. I never was impressed with him as a bad guy so it wasn't even a good scene to watch over and over.

Otherwise that game, Final Fantasy X, was brilliant. I enjoyed every minute.

Ghostbear1111 : Final Fantasy X was my first Final Fantasy game and it really was great the first time I played it, but I haven't been able to force myself to play it since because of all the scenes... After having gone through the game once and watched my little brother do the same, it's really, really painfully boring to sit through them all again. I mean, I have the same issue with the first Kingdom Hearts game. At least they had enough sense to let people skip scenes in each of the KH games after.

And yeah, Seymour Guado is really uninteresting as a bad guy.

EDIT: Actually, I just remembered that I had borrowed Final Fantasy XII years before owning X, so X was the first one I owned.

For me, that dull boring wish it weren't there gaming thing is to be pre-gym one in Pokemon handhelds. I know, gotta start somewhere, but when I see all those 2-3 level rattatas, and pidgey like pokemon, I hate it. MOAR MEWTWOS PLZ.

I could list so many...

First off I'll say Take 2. While it wasn't actually a good game, it was decent enough I suppose. However there was no excuse for that final boss. I hated it with a passion.

Shadow Dancer - an amazing Genesis game, and I still love it, but the final boss, yes once again the final boss is absolutely ridiculous. An insane difficulty spike that has flat out stupid design choices.

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. I actually really enjoyed this game until it started dragging each chapter on to ridiculous lengths. The problem being that you would play for sometimes three or four in-game years while NOTHING changed (including dialogue) just to get to the next chapter. I did the math once, and if you slept for eight hours a day (which is nearly impossible unless your character is dead on his feet when you go to bed) it'll take over 230 hours I think to finish a single game. As you might imagine, it's hard to focus THAT long on a farming game when nothing changes for fifty+ hours at a time. For this reason I now list this as the worst Harvest Moon I've ever played, and the only one I actually dislike .

I'll list more later, I don't want to yammer on any longer in this post.
