Do you plan your builds or do you come up with ideas on the spot?

Now I think all of us have had this wild idea at one point to make an amazing house or structure. But how do you even go about making it?

Some people come up with designs in a flat world before starting the main thing, while others just start placing down blocks without thinking too much about it. I personally always build on the spot since I like to see the space that I have to work with instead of estimating it in a flat world.

What about you?

I've always been someone that comes up with stuff on the spot... Which usually resulted in builds costing me a lot on the server. I start with a general concept but work out the details while building and usually make changes to make it more practical if something doesn't work out like I want it to. I also often have new ideas while building that I try to incorporate so planning out a project would be somewhat difficult for me since my builds tend to be more impulsive. Likely not the most efficient way to do it but eh, it works

On-the-spot ideas. The ONE build I wanted to make that I planned, I never got around to it.

I guess I just have to get in the rhythm if I'm ever gonna get it done, and if I start right away it's easier that way. That being said, I only have a tiny house and two pixel builds so I have a long ways to go.

If I am working on a big build, I always physically map out the layout on a sheet of paper. For instance, when I was working on both the empire state building and the world trade center on the vizzed server, I took a sheet of paper and made a grid, then I would draw what goes where and I would use different colors and such to label what goes there at the base.

An example is, I could make a grid and label that a building will have 5 block long walls, with 3 block long diagonal walls connecting the walls. I would label the diagonal walls and the corner walls as stone or black wool, and then I would label the 3 middle blocks of each wall line as glass. That would only show me the foundation and base wall material, lets say I want to change how the walls look or add something to make it look like there's a different level, then I would need to make a grid for the vertical aspect of the building, which for this building could be something like 10 or 11 by 20.

Then I just work from there.
