The original System Shock was one of the first games to be classified as first person role playing game when it was released on PC in 1994. Developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems it was set in a very Cyberpunk 2072. It was about the player, a nameless hacker on board a space station who is trying to stop the evil plans of the AI "SHODAN". It stood out for its deep gameplay mechanics but was also largely about exploration and very much had a horror atmosphere to it. In many ways it was a very revolutionary game and popularized the idea of using Audio Logs as a way of helping tell a story. It as well as the sequel System Shock 2 are both critically acclaimed games that are now considered cult classics and have held on to a small but dedicated fan base.

A kickstarter was planned to allow a remake of the original System Shock and it has now finally launched:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1598858095/system-shock

It will be a re imagining of the first game to be developed by Night Dive featuring modern visuals which is intended to help bring the game closer to the feel they were originally going for with the first game but was hard to achieve at the time because of technical limitations. A feeling of alienation. The re imaging is being developed in Unity and was cited by the director of business development at Night Dive as being influenced by the game Dead Space during an interview with Polygon. Some interesting stretch goals also include additional content in the form of new audio logs, a "true" RPG leveling progression system, a new scenario and a mystery ending stretch goal. The developers will look to satisfy both the small but dedicated fan base as well as introduce many more to the franchise. It will be be available on both PC and Xbox One (RIP PS4 owners :'c).

A playable demo is already on steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/482400/ which I personally think is looking very interesting. We can also see on the Steam page that the game seems to be set for release "Holiday 2017" though it is possible that it could be a placeholder given how early into development this is.

Having nearly just launched the amount pledged has already made it past 400000 USD of the 900000 USD needed with 29 days left to go. So it seems very likely that the project will be funded. While I personally would advocate caution when it comes to backing kickstarter projects with how it's a very huge risk, this seems to have had a lot planning gone in to it, especially with there already being a demo. I have to admit this does leave me excited.

This is in addition to System Shock 3 that was announced late last year and is being developed by Otherside Entertainment. It has famed video game designer Warren Spector and Looking Glass co founder Paul Neurath behind it who worked on System Shock and System Shock 2 respectively. In summary there seems to be a ton for System Shock fans to be excited for, as well of fans of the genre.

So did you play any of the original games? Regardless, does this have you excited? Tell me what you think!

EEEEEEEEEE!!!!! This looks so cool!

I hope that this comes out looking as good as what they've shown. I am a fan of the series, although I need to get back into playing SS2. I hope they actually deliver on a decent final product...If they do, that would be awesome! Although System Shock Remastered is a fairly recent game, so we're getting another one, but better?

I want a System Shock 2 in 2019. COME ON, CUE THE SONG AND DANCE, LET'S DO THIS!

I am glad that there seems to be a series of remakes and revivals of old games, and old staff coming together to make new games. Can we make vidya great again? Will they save us from this DLC infested nightmare? I dunno. But I want to play this so bad.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

The originals were okay games. I don't think I am in the diehard fan category for this game though.

I just hope Night Dive doesn't just retexure this and actually fixes/improves this... unlike their other releases (read- "ports")

Saw post about this like a week or so before the kickstarter launched, saying was gonna have one and that would get to see just how much they've changed from 94 release. Yes you can tell they have put thought and effort from project when see the trailer as well as the playable demo having already been released even though project hasn't been 100% funded yet. Know I am gonna back this even though may be worrisome to do so. (but already kind of pissed at what happened with amazon order that don't care xD)

This game ooh boy if it still sticks to the roots of the classic and keeps this new horror feeling alive. Ohhhhh boy is it gonna have my people turning their eyes/head towards them. The best way I can describe the games are...the first one is very similar to doom, yet more deadly in a sense of words. Alongside sharing similarities with Bioshock...yet FAR more gruesome in its
difficulty in comparison. Finally just like with half-life/dead space...every corner you turn around you never know when you'll be perfectly safe in one spot. System shock 1 was more action based though while System Shock 2 was even MORE so a driven horror, though seems with trailer they did add that second games charm to this remake if trailer is accurate to gameplay.

Know it may not appeal to everyone as Vanelan said; but if you "were/are" heavy fans of Bioshock or games of that type/setting...then you'll enjoy this most likely. It's great to see something so loved come back into fruition and like you said Zlinqx there's third game planned as well which just means. More fear to set into our life . Main thing I wonder now is if they'll try and redo SS2 just like this version of SS1 if successful? Just gotta hope that Warren Spector and the other still have their systemy kicks from the 2 decades past of System Shock. (94' - 99') Would say is absolutely gonna be good now that some originals are back...but don'ttttt wanna open mouth before see it in fruition...not that there's any example of that. *stares at Mighty No. 9 delay and sham*
