Over the past decade (maybe even before), many gamers argued about how game-y a new game is. Is it the next step in games, or just a sweet movie? I am bringing this up because the past years' video games have been pouring with cinematic emotion. Some people don't feel a thing and call it "too much like a movie". Some think that's just ignorance towards the developers that pour their heart out to make games. I think it's a never-ending fanboy battle that will leave everyone speculating for years to come.

What is considered a game?
PLEASE discuss with your own honest opinions but bring your manners and common sense along with you.

Say "games shouldn't be cinematic, it's distracting"! Say "I don't care as long as I have a controller"! Anything you want! This is something I hope to be very open to Vizzedians and be something we all have something to say about.

Well, I think if you as a player have some control over the outcome then it could be considered a game. Sure there are a lot more video cut scenes added in to games.... but I think most of the time those add something to the game that can't be done as effectively as in game visuals.

I really really enjoy the Cinematic Cuts in games.. and alot of people dont.. I like to feel part of the game and story line.. Ive allready heard complaints about FFXIII doing this, but from what ive seen its going to look beautiful on my 52 in LCD! haha so im stoked.

If you have a short attention span, or are really into the classic gaming style then cut scenes would be annoying for sure.

I like cut scenes if the game's story is a main focus, but it takes far more than cutscenes to make a great game.

I agree with geeo. If you have control over at least some part of the action, then yes, it is a game. I actually like the cinematic direction, it allows developers to create moments that normally would be impossible with the way you control your character.

If you go to blockbuster instead of gamestop that might be the reason why it's not a game. Try going in the right store first lol.

Seriously though, some games implement cuts scenes very well. For example, sonic adventure on the first level you got that huge whale chasing you that is a awesome cut scene cause its so unexpected and its very short.

Cut scenes that are long are boring. I like ones that happen during the action they build suspense. If your in control its a game, else its a movie.

Some things just need a cut scene to really be told well. The only thing I don't like about some cut scenes is having to press a button to get it to continue. I figured button pressing should be for actual game play. Anywho, I think ToS had some pretty good cut scenes. I enjoyed that story.

I think a game should have a character, either bad or good. A storyline has to be in it, it can't be random stuff thrown into it. Games should have some action into it, fightning between characters, tackling the other people in sports, or just type of a game that you press buttons with. Cutscenes also makes game, but it doesn't need to have it, just only to make the plot more understandable. Also quality graphics and music makes a game more intersesting and addicting to play.

I like the idea of cut scenes. They have to be well written of course and be good on the eyes. It really doesn't matter to me if there long or short as long as the whole game doesn't drag with long cut scenes. Doom 3 is a pure example of good short cut scenes and I think Metal Gear Solid is a good example of good long cut scenes, both are done effectively and have me sold. I like the cinematic part because it adds a story to the game, something to play for at times, and is fun to watch.

Regardless of how many cut scenes there are, if you play it, it's a game.

I like cut scenes, they add depth to the game, and it feels your really part of a story.

A game is formulated by the fact that you have to challenge yourself to do something in it, while having fun. If you can control the sequence of events in the game, it would be considered a game. Cutscenes, I find, are parts of the game, lets just say like leaves on a tree, not a foundation, but more like an extension.

A video game would just be considered a doing in anything it could be a challande like metal gear or somthing completly unchallanging like Sims. For cutscenes in a videogame would be something that made people more into a game, i like them because it gets me excited for the big battle or whatever after the cutscence. Now when a game is really just a bunch of huge high graphic cutscenes this makes the game bad, and more considered a movie. There is a bunch of things added to video games after the simple arcade games in the 1980's. Like graphics, gameplay and all other kinds of things they don't make a game but they do sometimes make a game better.

I also believe that you don't have to be playing on a TV or PC to be playing a game. Board Games and card games can fall into this category because they even have been modded into video games nowadays.

A game has to have obsticals. A game can't be too easy nor too hard. A game shoulden't rely on graphics for a selling point but how the game is played.
