April 21st Results

Tampa Bay 1 Detroit 0 - I had this series going 7 in the Lightnings favor. Turns out it only took them 5. I'm impressed by Tampa Bay that they managed what they did without Stamkos and Stralman. I don't know if either of those guys comes back before the next round but it would be helpeful. I think Stralman has the better chance.

Pittsbrugh 5 New York 0 - WOW. I didn't see this coming. The Pens took it to the Rangers tonight. And Malkin finally showed up. That is dangerous for the Rangers. I don't see this going past 5 personally but you never know.

Anaheim 4 Nashville 1 - this series just evened up and all games won on the road. Strange! Still, now the series is going back to Anaheim and I expect Anaheim will not mess up at home again.

Chicago 3 St. Louis 3 - I'm watching this right now and it's going into overtime. Super exciting 3rd period and waiting to see what happens. I'll update when something happens.

Update to the previous nights results....

Chicago 4 St. Louis 3. Chicago won in double overtime on a wrap around goal by Patrick Kane. The entire play was offside before this happened but because it was a goal that won the game in OT during the playoffs there was no coaches challenge. That's okay. St. Louis still has 2 more chances to beat the Hawks (though honestly I don't see that happening).

April 22nd Results

Philadelphia 2 Washington 0 - Philly manages 2 straight wins after losing 3 straight. This series is definitely getting interesting. Neuvirth has really made a difference since starting game 4. I still think Washington is going to win this series but I am glad that Philly has kept it interesting. I'm also glad that Washington didn't sweep so they aren't as rested and healthy going into the next round.

Islanders 2 Panthers 1 - this game was exciting. The double OT was tense the entire time. The game winning goal was awesome as was the celebration. Islanders are up 3-2 in this series and going home for game 6. Good chance they could go on to the next round now.

Wild 5 Stars 4 - I was surprised that Minnesota was able to win this game. It was a very back and forth game with each team holding the lead for a while but Minnesota won in the end in overtime. They are still down 3-2 but going home for game 6 means they have a good chance to push this to 7. And who knows, if they can make it to the next round they might get Vanek and/or Parise back which would help a ton.

San Jose 6 LA 3 - This game was a game of 3's. San Jose went up by 3 early and then the Kings tied it with 3 straight. Then in the 3rd San Jose scored 3 again to win the series. Glad they were able to beat LA to get over what happened last year. Also, San Jose has had a solid or great team nearly every year for the last decade but have never been able to get to the finals.

Pittsburgh 6 New York Rangers 3 - well, this series ended earlier than I expected though I'm happy about the result. Penguins have lost the last 2 series against the Rangers so it was probably really nice for them to finally beat them and get out of the first round this year.

Anaheim 5 Nashville 2 - 3 wins in a row for Anaheim is not a huge surprise. Hopefully Nashville can win game 6 to push this to a 7th game but considering how these last 3 games have been I'm not too hopeful.

Chicago 6 St. Louis 3 - and this series is going to a 7th game. I'm sad for St. Louis because it would have been nice for them to end this earlier but if you lose 3 in a row you don't deserve to go to the finals. You've got to be able to finsih other teams off. I'm looking forward to game 7 though!

What a day! 3 series come to an end.

Washington 1 Philly 0 - Not a surprise that this series ended but I was hoping for 1 more game. Still, Washington advances on a game where goalies controlled the game. Only 1 goal made the difference in the end.

Dallas 5 Minnesota 4 - this game was a shock. Dallas up 4-0 to start the third and then Minnesota starts a rally and get within 1 goal, and what looked like 1 inch, from sending the game to overtime. Too bad really because that would have made an unreal 3rd period to talk about. Still, Minnesota played above what I expected they would and without 2 of their best players. Kudos to them for that.

Islanders 2 Panthers 1 - I was hopeful for this but not expecting it. Islanders advance to the 2nd round off of 2 goals from Tavares. I've watched the replay of the 2nd goal in overtime a few times now because I love the crowd reaction for game and series winning goals like this. There isn't much like it for the home crowd. Too bad for Florida but they are going to have a good team for a few years going forward. I'm not worried about them.

So, Anaheim Nashville and St. Louis Chicago are the only 2 series left to finish. Hopefully both of those wrap up Monday so the next round can get started right away

Nashville 3 Anaheim 1 - I didn't get to watch this game but I'm happy Nashville gets a chance to move on to the next round. I still think Anaheim will win this one but hopefully they put forth a good effort.

St. Louis 3 Chicago 2 - this one went 7 games and the wrong team won based on my predictions. Still, I got to watch the third period of this game and it was intense! I'm happy St. Louis won. It's like when Chicago finally beat Vancouver (or maybe that was LA) and then went on to win the cup. This might be St. Louis' moment.

April 27th Results

Islanders 5 Lightning 3 - sounds like the Islanders handled the Lightning pretty handily. They got the lead and never looked back. Interesting start to the series for sure.

Nashville 2 Anaheim 1 - I'm really glad Nashville won. They've had good teams for a few years now but seem to get stuck losing early on. They are in a market that needs more games like this in order to stay successful.

Round 2 Predictions

Islanders Vs Lightning - If both teams were healthy I would be picking the Lightning for sure but with Stamkos and Stralman out and with how the Islanders played last round I'm going to pick them. I don't think it'll be easy though. Islanders 4-2

Washington Vs Pittsburgh - this is (hopefully) going to be an awesome series. These 2 teams have been linked every since Crosby and Ovechkin came into the league. And it has been a while since they faced each other in the playoffs. I'm hoping to see as many of these games as possible because I see both teams really pushing for it. Washington 4-3

Dallas Vs St. Louis - this is another tough one to call. Seguin is out with a lingering injury and may not play the entire series depending on how he heals up. That's a big x-factor for this series. With Seguin I would pick Dallas but without it's a toss up. I think St. Louis is going to win this series. They overcame the Blackhawks in the first round and to me are poised to make a good run in the playoffs. I don't think Dallas is as strong top to bottom as Chicago was. St. Louis 4-3

San Jose Vs Nashville - this is a strange match-up because I don't think I've ever seen these 2 teams play each other in the regular season or playoffs. Still, I think Nashville is more likely to win the series than San Jose but San Jose had an easier series against the Kings than Nashville had. They will likely be playing in 2 days from now while San Jose has had a week off to rest and recoup. I'm going to go with San Jose 4-2.

I LOVED the Islanders game last night. I was at a baseball game watching the hockey game on the scoreboard, we were able to watch like 40 minutes of the match in total. I was pretty down when the Lightning first scored but then things got crazy for the Islanders starting right before the end of the first period.

zanderlex : yeah, I didn't get to see the game but once they got going the Islanders really took it to the Lightning. I doubt things will go that way next game but for now it is a great start for the Islanders. First time out of the 1st round in 23 years or something like that. That's crazy to me!

April 28th results...

Washington 4 Pittsburgh 3 - this series has not disappointed so far. Hat trick from Oshie was awesome. Ovechkin and Crosby were not major factors yet in the series but that won't last. Each one will has his time to shine. I feel like Pittsburgh has more balanced lines than Washington does right now. I think Pittsburgh has 3 lines that can score readily while Washington has 2 that they will rely on more heavily. It'll be interesting to see if that plays out like it did last night. Pittsburgh had balanced scoring and Washington got most of it's scoring from 1 line (and 1 guy).

Dallas 2 St. Louis 1 - This one didn't start out quite like I was hoping but I wouldn't count out St. Louis yet. This was a close game that could have gone either way in the end. I can easily see St. Louis winning one in Dallas.

San Jose 5 Nashville 2 - It took San Jose 2 periods to really get going but once they did they put in 5 goals in a single period. I don't see San Jose dominating like that every game but it was a solid start for a team that was off for a week before playing Nashville. Nashville could have used an extra day to rest that they didn't get because it took 7 games to beat Anaheim. Still, pretty even for the first 2 periods. Maybe Nashville will have more success going forward.

Welp, I said I would try to do it and I did, I'll be going to the game on Tuesday. It was a bit expensive, and the seats aren't that great but who cares because it's a big event.

I got 2 tickets for myself and one of the people I live with, who helped pay.

As for today's game, it starts in an hour and I'll make sure to watch the entire thing, I'm at my old school right now and they're going to be having a viewing party for it.

zanderlex : that is not a bad price for a playoff game. I don't think playoff tickets go for less than $100 each in Calgary. You're lucky in that way I guess. If I could go to a playoff game for that much I would definitely be there.

geeogree : Well, I did go to Vivid seats for them. Most ways that playoff tickets are sold is that you can't buy single game tickets, the people who get first dibs have to buy strips for the entire playoffs, even if their team doesn't get past the first round, in which case the rest is put towards next season's season tickets.

So not everybody will go to all the games, so the ones they don't, they are pretty much forced to give them or sell them, so most of them will go for cheap with tickets that are part of strips.

If I went to the islanders website or the arena for official leftover tickets, only a handful of even the limited view seats would be under $120

So, the draft lottery happened and is anyone surprised at who got the first pick? Here is a rundown of the pick order and then I'll complain....

2016 NHL Draft order:

1. Toronto Maple Leafs

2. Winnipeg Jets

3. Columbus Blue Jackets

4. Edmonton Oilers

5. Vancouver Canucks

6. Calgary Flames

7. Arizona Coyotes

8. Buffalo Sabres

9. Montreal Canadiens

10. Colorado Avalanche

11. New Jersey Devils

12. Ottawa Senators

13. Carolina Hurricanes

14. Boston Bruins

Of course, the Maple Leafs get the top pick when they finally are the worst team. At least it wasn't Edmonton again. Still, Austin Matthews won't save that franchise on his own. Edmonton has gotten 4 1st round picks and they are still a terrible team. Only time will tell though if this pick can help fix the team or not.

April 30th Results

Tampa Bay 4 Islanders 1 - this is more what I was expecting from this series. Bishop holding the fort and the Lightning offense making the Islanders pay. Glad to see the series even up after the Islanders came out and stole the first game from Tampa Bay. Tied 1-1 going to New York will keep things interesting.

Pittsburgh 2 Washington 1 - Ovechkin and Crosby still not major point factors in this series. Crosby has no points and Ovechkin has 1 assist. Not exactly anything to write home about. Still, Pittsburgh has got to be happy about splitting the series in Washington. Gives them a great chance to put pressure on Washington if they can take a 2-1 or even 3-1 lead while at home. Also nice to see Matt Murray only let in 1 goal. That should help his confidence going forward against Washington.

Well, I got the Islanders and Lightning totally wrong. Lightning won in 5 games and I had the Islanders winning in 6. Turns out when Tavares doesn't score the Islanders don't win. Pretty tough statistic to fight against for the Islanders.

I wonder if Stralman or Stamkos manage to come back during the conference finals. They'll have another 4 or 5 days to wait before the Pittsburgh Washington series is over I imagine so who knows what could happen by then. Even just getting Stralman back would help a lot. The Lightning haven't faced a team as good as Pittsburgh or Washington so far in the playoffs and beating them would be a real challenge.

So I've missed this thread for a while now.... I'm not going to update much but I'll post where things are now.

Pittsburgh is up 2-1 over the Lightning and have dominated the last 2 games. Outshooting the Lightning 2-1 in each game. Stralman has come back but hasn't been as impactful as he would be had he been around and in game shape at the start of the series.

St. Louis vs San Jose are tied 1-1 so far. This series is definitely leaning in San Jose's favor so far. I haven't felt like St. Louis has ever really been in control. I expect San Jose will end up winning this series.

I don't know what other people would say, but the penguins are dominating.

Who they are only up by 1 game, just watching the games, they have more puck control and have better defense. They aren't allowing San Jose to get the puck down the ice and to the goal.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I'm for San Jose as its their first time in the Stanley cup.

Barathemos : yeah, Pittsburgh has been strong ever since they changed coaches. It has made a big difference.

I'm torn about who I want to see win. San Jose getting here for the first time would make for a great story but I've been a Pittsburgh fan for a long time now and I'd be okay if they won as well.

I do think Pittsburgh has the better game plan going so far. I'm excited to watch the rest of the series because I think it's going to be a good one. San Jose will have a better time at home when they can line match better.

YES YES YES! Pittsburgh won 3-1 and is now up 3-1 in the series. I do not see San Jose coming back from this. Pittsburgh has outplayed San Jose this entire series. The series could be over if San Jose hadn't gotten a lucky break in O/T on Monday. Still, I bet it would be fun to win at home.
