Missed E3? Never Fear, You're Covered!

Ladies and gentlemen, I have just returned from four days of watching Video game trailers, hardware reveals, and service announcements for eight to twelve hours a day. Was it worth it? Technically no because that's roughly forty five hours of my life that I'll never get back, and those hours were spent unproductively...however, I say yes! Yes it was worth every seemingly wasted second because I have no life and I love Video Games far more than is healthy (not really).

And so it is that if you have any questions regarding PlayStation at E3, XBox Press conference, or Nintendo's digital event or closing night events, I have answers. This article will attempt to talk about all of E3 2015's shining moments, but the possibility of covering everything worth mentioning is low because there was just so much.

First Up: Microsoft

As always, MS stepped up to bat first of the three big companies (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo), and this year they spent their big reveal time on a blend of Hardware and Software. Below I'll recount most of the things they revealed, however not everything listed is necessarily XBox exclusive, and the same is true for the lists you'll find here for Sony and Nintendo.

Hardware
MS revealed backward compatibility for the XBox One, which I must say surprised me. This is a great idea to finally bring around. It's easy to imagine how happy this announcement must make fans, and it's certainly something I hope more developers do. We need to bring back backwards compatibility, so here's to hoping this is just the beginning of a chain reaction.

Next up, Hololens.
Microsoft's other big reveal was the Hololens: a headset that looks a lot like a VR headset but instead lets you play games in hologram form. I couldn't really explain this properly, you just need to see it yourself to understand. Go ahead, look it up: I'll be here when you get back. Well I won't be, but this article will anyway.

Software spotlight
Recore
Record is a game made by Keji Inafune. The game is set in a world where robots rule, and humans are scarce. While many robots want to eradicate humans, it seems that some sympathize with the humans and will lend a hand throughout the game.

The best looking feature of this game that we've seen so far is the ability to remove a robot's core (a small glowing orb) and put it inside an inactive robot and thus transfer the robot's "soul" to the new machine. In this way no robot must die, but instead may live on inside a new machine, despite it's first form being destroyed. The trailer demonstrated this beautifully.

In my opinion, this was the best game in Microsoft's presentation.

Cuphead
Cuphead is a side scrolled that is designed as a 1930s (or maybe 1940s) cartoon. We saw precious little of this one, but it merits the attention of mentioning here. The game's visuals are extremely appealing, and the developers should be credited with a good concept here, and one that looks like it is being pulled off well.

Plants VS. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
Those pesky zombies are at it again. I guess a garden of trigger happy plants just can't live in peace these days. What has vegetation come to?

PvZ is back, and this time it looks to up the action with insane new weapons and levels. I can't say for sure, but I think I may have seen a zombie in a mech in that trailer....

Rise of The Tomb Raider
Lara is back in her newest adventure. Sadly not much could be derived from the trailer and gameplay footage we were shown, other than she has mad climbing skills and a partner who can't pronounce her name right... again.

Rare Replay
Rare Replay takes us back to the days of Battletoads (and even earlier) and leads us through several years of Rare classics, such as Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Jet Force Gemeni, Perfect Dark, and more. A compilation for the hardcore Rare fan, this one includes thirty games throughout the team's history.

Microsoft's remaining software show in a nutshell
Halo 5
Fallout 4
Forza Motorsport 6
Dark Souls 3
Gigantic

I'll spare to explain what all of these are, but feel free to look them up and see what exactly you XBox owners have to look forward to. Again, you can find XBox' E3 showings on http://www.twitch.tv . Just find their page and pull up their archived videos.

Now it's Sony's Turn

Sony's first software reveal
You always save the best for last, right? Well not according to Sony, who chose to rock the gaming community by opening with what else but The Last Guardian.

Yes, you read that right. The game that was announced in 2009 with a target release of 2011, the one that everyone was so excited for but it disappeared, yes, THAT The Last Guardian. Sony opened with that one. Talk about a bombshell.

Shenmue III
This was quickly followed by Shenmue III's Kickstarter announcement.

Shenmue III.

Seriously, after all these years, the Shenmue trilogy can finally be brought to a proper close (the $2,000,000 goal was met within twelve hours).

Final Fantasy VII Remake
Seriously Sony, how many more bombs are you going to drop on us tonight?

It was at this point that we began to see grown men crying, while others were jumping up and down in the aisles and screaming at the top of their lungs. Yes, it was that big of a deal.

But you can come out of your bomb shelter now, because Sony was finally done after this. They proceeded to show us some more truly great looking games, but no shockers like the three mentioned above.

No Man's Sky
And on that note we saw more info on the highly anticipated No Man's Sky.
This time the guys from Hello Games demonstrated some gameplay for us, and it certainly looked like the sandbox/adventure gamer's dream come true. Unfortunately no release date was given.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
This one was incredible. Metal dinosaurs? Hunting said Dinos with Bows and other cool weapons? Action RPG? A redheaded protagonist who quotes old Irish songs ("The Storm is coming, and I will be ready")? Stunning visuals? Interesting post apocalyptic stories of people so far removed from modern life that they don't even know who we were? Fluid gameplay? Seriously, aside from the 2016 release goal, what's not to love? Let's hope Guerilla Games keeps this one at least partly clean. Well, I'll hope for it anyway, because after that trailer, I need some Horizon in my life.

Dreams
Ever had one of those weird dreams where everything is so real yet unreal? You know the kind; maybe you're walking through the hallway when suddenly the floor disappears and you fall into the ocean and you're suddenly swimming with the fish and riding dolphins. Well...maybe normal people don't dream like that, but you get the picture. These kinds of "Lucid Dreaming" moments are what Dreams is about.

With Dreams you make your own dreams by hand, creating everything from the environment to the characters in the dreams, you then make the dreams unfold and animate character movements. Once you're finished making your dream you can upload it for other users.

Sound weird? Well it is. To understand it you'll probably have to watch it's E3 trailer, and maybe be a member of the development team that is making it. At this point it isn't even clear if this is something you play or just develop dreamlike movie sequences with. In other words, we don't know if these dreams are like levels that can be played, or if the dream making is[ the gameplay. At any rate, it's certainly a very unique game, and it should prove interesting seeing what it ends up being.

Sony's remaining software show in a nutshell
Uncharted 4
Hitman
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
Batman Arkham Knight

Also shown was a reel of various Indie games as well as a reel of various PS Vita games.

Hardware
While Sony did fail to unveil the Slim PS4 as well as the 1TB PS4 (both of which they've filed with the FCC over, we're told), they didn't exactly come up empty by way of hardware announcements.

Morpheus, anyone?
Sony announced more on Morpheus Monday, and even showed us some trailers for Morpheus games meant for core gamers (Rigs looked sweet by the way).

Services
Sony mentioned updates to Vue and their Spotify app in passing, though not much information was given. One thing we do know about Vue is that it will now support programming choices à la carte. This means that Sony will be the first television programming provider ever to allow you to customize your "cable" package as it were. The end result: you only pay for the channels you actually want, rather than being forced into buying a pre-made package of channels.

Nintendo Steps Into The Ring

Nintendo's turn to try their hand at impressing us with upcoming games. As expected, their lineup was heavy on 3ds titles, leaving the Wii U a little less represented than it probably should have been. In the end though, games are what matters here. Besides, it isn't like the Wii U was entirely ignored. It got a few good chances to shine.

Starfox Zero
Nintendo showed up in a big way, opening with the announcement of Star Fox Zero. This one has been too long in the making, but at least it looks as though the wait has ended with a truly good looking game. This one finally gave me a reason to want a Wii U...eventually.

Xenoblade Chronicles X
This one sneaked up on me personally, as I had no knowledge of the series beforehand (aside from the name), but it was easily one of Nintendo's best looking shows this year. Sadly I didn't catch any information on it, so I would suggest looking it up.

Yoshi's Wooly World
Though the approach to it could have been much better, it was nice to see a new Yoshi game in action.

Whether you like it's take on Yoshi games or not, one thing Yoshi's Wooly World cannot be accused of is failing to live on in the true spirit of Yoshi games. This one definitely looks and plays like a true Yoshi game, and with multiplayer support for the main game, it has to be a blast for fans of the series like myself.

Hyrule Warriors: Legends
Yes the hit game(?) Hyrule Warriors has now received a 3ds "reimagining" (man Nintendo liked that word this year). It's Hyrule Warriors all over again, this time with some Wind Waker characters and levels thrown in, along with all of the DLC characters made for the original Hyrule Warriors.

It looks as though Nintendo could be accused now of being guilty of the opposite of what Sony is accused of with the Vita: QC Porting. It's said that Sony cannot stand to let the PS Vita get a good exclusive. That when this happens, they rush to port it or it's sequel to the PS4.
Well now we see Nintendo porting the few big Wii U hits (and their sequels --or "reimaginings") to the 3DS. Coincidence? I highly doubt it. Sony and Nintendo are both being sure to get their more popular games onto their most popular platform in order to maximize sales I think. That isn't to say we won't see a Hyrule Warriors 2 on the Wii U, because knowing the tenacity and insistence of KOEI Tecmo to release several versions of each "Warriors" game they make, we will see it.

Super Mario Maker
Finally, you can legally make your own Mario games! Well...mostly. You can make your own levels, but there doesn't seem to be a way to make a story for your work, and that's probably for the best.

So what is Super Mario Maker anyway? According to Shigeru Miyamoto Super Mario Maker is basically the engine they use to build Super Mario games faster and with more ease. He says that they began enjoying making these games so much that they felt the players would enjoy it as well, so they decided to release it as a game.

So there you have it: the Super Mario engine is more or less being made open to the public, minus the ability to code or produce any external files (again: legally). And while I'm sure they aren't giving us everything that their engine uses for game design, we essentially have a user friendly version of their level editor at our fingertips. Pretty interesting when you look at it that way.

Another point of interest among fans was the ability to upload levels for the public to play that were literally impossible to beat. Nintendo has accounted for this possibility and designed a pretty clever way to avoid it.
Here's how it works: When you design a level, you can make it as insanely difficult as you wish, but you must first beat the level yourself before you can upload it for others.

Nice little trick there, Nintendo. A very clever move that keeps people from trolling us with impossible designs as well as rewarding more expert players with the ability to upload more difficult levels. So literally the difficulty level cap of your next submission is determined by your own skills...and perhaps a dash of luck, unless of course you have someone in your house who plays better than you do that you can pass the controller to. Regardless, you can click on the next user submitted level with confidence that it will be entirely possible to win.

Finally, the levels that are uploaded will be sorted by difficulty, which will be determined by how many people have succeeded in conquering the level. And there will be a section for users who are new to level submissions called "Up and Coming". And in regards to dying, when you die you will see little Xs on the screen marking where others have died in that same area...if they have.

The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes
Fire Emblem: Fates
Animal Crossing: Happy Home
Yo Kai Watch
Mario & Luigi Paper Jam
Mario Tennis: Power Smash

And Now For The Rest Of The Games

This list comprises most of the games shown at E3, but it does miss a few. Again, it could be worth your time dropping in on http://www.twitch.tv/twitch or http://www.twitch.tv/IGN or even http://twitch.tv/PlayStation. I'm unsure if the IGN or PlayStation URLs I listed are correct or not, as I used a mobile app to watch, but they should work.
Once you click one of those links simply pull up their archived videos and find some E3 2015 action.

The Division
The game that turned heads at E3 2013 and still hasn't released returned for it's third straight E3 showing. If you ask me this is getting a little ridiculous, and they also showcased some very unimpressive footage of the multiplayer mode. All of this combines to make me feel far less excited about the game, well that and the fact that it's made by Ubisoft.

Still, it looks like we'll be getting The Division next year, assuming they can follow through with the release date this time, and I suspect they will be able to after this last year long delay. And the delays are understandable, as Video Game development can be tricky.

In this game a weaponized virus has been unleashed and civilization has been brought to it's knees. You are a part of an elite group known as The Division who must handle this chaos and somehow put an end to it.

For Honor
Well now here's a game that easily lands a spot in the top ten best looking games of E3 2015 in my book, and probably lands in the top five with considerable ease.

For Honor is a war game set back in the days of sword combat. You can play as one of three groups: Knights, Vikings, and Samurais. Each appears to be set in their own proper timeline, and they all seem to offer the same basic abilities, though likely the latter won't be the case with the finished product.

In the game we finally get the taste of the war gameplay that VG sword fighting enthusiasts like myself have always wanted: realistic one on one sword to sword combat. There are no shields and there appears to be no other weapons besides swords, leaving this one of the first true sword dueling games.

But no shield? How does that work?
As the head of development said "Your weapon is your shield". You use one stick to move your character and one stick to wield your blade. You use your sword to attack but you must also use it to defend against attacks and knock your foe's sword away as it swings near you. In this we have a true strategic fight rather than another "warriors" style game where we mash buttons until our enemy is dead. This is the Dynasty Warriors meets Bushido Blade game that I've been waiting for years for, and it certainly doesn't look like it'll disappoint. A gameplay demo of 4v4 multiplayer was shown off, and this one looks sharp. Definitely one of the most anticipated upcoming games in my book.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5
Well who saw this one coming? Activision has finally given us another THPS after about a decade of waiting. I thought this series was dead, but I was delighted to see that I was wrong.

Not only will we see classic THPS action in this installment, we'll also see some nice new features such as allowing several players (I think it was eighteen) in the same skate arena via online multiplayer modes, as well as a few other cool things that I'll spare mentioning here for the sake of not rambling too much.

Starwars Battlefront
Another good looking game, Battlefront showed us a decent amount of footage and actually managed to intrigue me with the first person shooter scenes despite my dislike of FPS and lack of interest in Starwars in general. I wouldn't be too surprised to have this one in my own library eventually, so fans should be especially intrigued.

Everybody's Gone To The Rapture
An odd title, but an interesting game for thinkers and explorers. In this one you play as what appears to be the last person on Earth. Your mission is simple: figure out where everyone went. Did the world end, or was it something else? Whatever the answer, you have plenty of time to find it as there's no one else around and nothing else to do but look for clues.

The game is set in a large open world with many small stories of individuals for you to follow, and in the end hopefully understand what has happened.

One feature that I find to be a wonderful idea is the lack of gating. Literally every single area of the game that can be explored is open to you at the start of the game. In fact, you can walk straight to the ending if you want. The developer's thoughts on this are simple: They want to make games that make you want to play not force you to. A great concept and hopefully one that we can see properly implemented in future games as well. We all get tired of being force fed gameplay portions at times, and this mechanic does away with that entirely, allowing the player to play the game as they choose.

Rocket League
Ever dreamed of playing Soccer with a giant ball...in a giant arena....in vehicles propelled by rockets? No? Me neither, but Rocket League is still taking us there.

An interesting looking game that looks like a lot of fun, especially in couch multiplayer (though thankfully it doesn't try to force that on you), Rocket League is a game I plan to try at some point. An extra feature that we saw in a few games at E3 2015 is the ability to have multiplayer matches with PC players as well as PS4 players, and said ability is present in Rocket League. Pretty sweet, I would say.

And the list goes on and on, insomuch that it really would be too exhausting to write or read an exhaustive (see what I did there?) rundown of them all. And so it is that we shall leave off here, and follow with a list of names of other video games that were shown off which we have not covered here yet. My apologies for not being able to describe them all.

Make no mistake, indeed there were more shown off, but to find and list every last one of them would be quite the daunting task. The intention of this article is simply to show the majority of what was on show at E3. If you wish to see more, feel free to look it up while you still can.

That does it for this E3 overview article. Hopefully you saw a few games that appealed to you; I know I sure did. What games --if any -- appealed to you this year? Let us know!

That does it for this E3 overview article. Hopefully you saw a few games that appealed to you; I know I sure did. What games --if any -- appealed to you this year? Let us know!

Eirinn : Thank you Eirinn for the E3 cover up of all systems. I can't wait for that "Final Fantasy 7 remake" . I would be one of those people crying in the stands for true beauty in a game has finally come back lol. At least I never saw the game remake yet, but just remembering the nostalgic days of playing the PS1 version, they probably did some really good improvements if I were to guess by people crying in the stands. But anyways, I thought they already made a "Plants and Zombies Garden Warfare 2". I know they made that game on the 3DS, but I'm not sure if it is a sequel or just a remake of the original game. Then I also can't wait for that game called "Yokoi Watch" because it looks like a cool spin from Shin Megami Tensei games from Atlus like the Shin Megami Tensei 4. There was on game that I thought you missed from the Nintendo or 3DS section of E3 and I think that was "Paper Mario Bros. Paper Jam". It looks like a promising RPG of the paper Mario franchise, but hopefully I get the money to buy it by the time it comes out because I love Paper Mario games especially the "Paper Mario 1", "Paper Mario 2", and "Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door" (I think that is what they are called).

I'm really excited at the new Need for Speed, finally it returns to its roots after years of trying something else. Can't wait until November, maybe I may have my birthday present just there ^^.

I'm also surprised Bandai-Namco said nothing about Tekken 7. We already have trailers, new characters revealed... And still, Tekken 7 is nowhere to be found in the most important convention about videogames. Very disappointing.

Really looking forward to that chain reaction Microsoft may have initiated with the Xbox ONE being backward compatible. Thinking back to how the Wii started a chain reaction to play in a different way which inspired the Playstation Move and Kinect, I hope this chain reaction also becomes a reality, and if possible in less time than it took them to imitate/surpass the Wii.

I would have loved to see something for Saint Seiya: Soldier's Soul, even if it was a release date more accurate than late 2015. Nothing about SoulCalibur either, but seeing how Bandai-Namco treated Tekken, I'm not surprised by this. And thank god, no Gran Turismo 7 whatsoever. Or is it bad we didn't see anything?

Oh, and I just checked my mailbox and Playstation is bragging about it's 1 TB Playstation 4. Hell, you didn't even make a proper presentation of it and you're filling mailboxes all over the world?

happiness7 : Of course! How could I have forgotten Paper Jam??? That one caused quite a stir at my house when it came on, so I'm shocked that it slipped my mind like that. I'll add it to the list. Thanks for reminding me.

Yo Kai Watch reminded me of Pokémon, but then I've never seen Shen Megami Tensei.

As for the FF Remake, I'm not a Final Fantasy fan, but I am looking forward to seeing this one in action. It was a huge game when I was a kid and seeing it back and with current gen graphics will really be something. Also have to wonder about UI changes etc. I hope they modernized that as well.

Personally my main picks from E3 this year were:
-No Man's Sky (for the second year in a row)
-Salt And Sanctuary
-Everybody's Gone To The Rapture
-Horizon: Zero Dawn
-For Honor

I wanted more like Fire watch and Rocket League, but that list shows my top picks, but not in that order. I just hope all of those fall into my gaming guidelines as I can be pretty strict on a game's content.

Anyway, thanks for reading, liking, and replying!

EX Palen : Thank you for checking out the article and replying as well.

It was odd that Tekken 7 was ignored, especially when Bandai-Namco was there revealing games anyway. Maybe it was there and I missed it, but I doubt it would be possible to miss that one. lol It seems like it would make a big splash.

Also I saw Need For Speed but didn't list it because I wasn't sure if there was anything else to the name or if it was just Need For Speed. lol I didn't see it in action, just the name. I'll add it to the list now.

Well Sony actually had the Eye Toy back during the PS2 days before the Wii, but the idea didn't catch on for some reason. I think the Wii kind of popularized it and gave them the push to try it again with Move. No doubt the Wii was when the idea caught on. I just wish Sony had kept backwards compatibility all along. Unfortunately Andrew House has said they aren't considering Backwards compatibility as of now because of the difficulty due to the extreme hardware changes between the PS3 and PS4, and indeed they did a lot more than just make PS4 more powerful. They completely changed the programming structure for the system. Kind of like how Nintendo is changing structure between the Wii U and the "NX". I'm still going to hope they either make it or allow us to put a PS3 game in our PS4 and get the digital version for free from PSN.

Yeah, I don't think either of us were surprised (or unhappy) about GT7 not being there. lol Sony completely blew away everything that everyone was saying they would do. It's pretty funny actually since everyone was saying they would talk about how many millions of systems they'd sold and how they would pass over the PS Vita and all this stuff, and they ended up showcasing the Vita and completely ignoring sales totals despite their continual climb. Basically they weren't arrogant jerks like everyone predicted.

I'm still confused about the lack of a 1TB PS4 announcement. Maybe they just figured they should stick with more relevant things that affected people who already owned a PS4/Vita? Who knows.

Overall I was really happy with the way Sony played E3 both during their press conference and during their PlayStation Livecast for days 0-3. They put in their stuff plus have Indies a chance to shine on several occasions. They just showed some great games, really.

As Eirinn will recall, I once said I would sacrifice a child if The Last Guardian were released, and two great things happened, The Last Guardian was shown at E3 and the police haven't yet shown up at my door. I was quite disappointed though. Team Ico have two games they can really draw inspiration from, and they decided to draw it from the one that wasn't as good as the other. It seems to take after Ico like a child taking after it's abusive father, and I don't think that is all that good. Ico was fine, but The Last Guardian just looks boring. It's beautiful, yes, but calling a Team Ico game pretty is like reiterating that Donald Trump is ugly, everybody knew that before going in. They didn't show off any interesting new mechanics besides that giant-dog-griffin thing, but everything shown in the trailer looked incredibly choreographed, so I don't see any opportunity for unique experiences. No epic music, no cool boss battles to justify me being excited over the game, just a giant-dog-griffin that will inevitably used to make me cry like a big baby later on in the game, because team ico treat companions like flies, they swat them the second they get comfortable.

As for the Final Fantasy 7 remake, I'm watching it like a tiger petting zoo, I'm very intrigued but I see many ways it could end badly. Square have changed a lot over the years, mostly for the worse, sorry,
entirely for the worse, and I worry about the effect they'll have on this new remake.

And I like to imagine you left Dark Souls 3 just for me like tossing a slab of meat into the Rancor Pit so it can be torn apart. Here's my problem with it: THE TRAILER WAS BASICALLY THEM TALKING ABOUT DARK SOULS 1! You are walking through the remains of a once great civilization? Yeah, I'm basically a tour guide of once great civilizations, I've been walking around in them since Dark Souls 1. The problem with the cycles device they have written for themselves is that they are basically going to advertise the same game over and over again. Seriously, if  I didn't know any better I would think they were talking about a Dark Souls remake.

That said, I see opportunity in Dark Souls 3 like I see opportunity in the rifle at the end of Old Yeller. Let this be the final bullet in the skull of my beloved franchise, let it ascend to heaven as a reminder of how not to make sequels.

Game looks alright, though.

And for honor looks pretty cool.

yoshirulez! : They showed KH3 and I missed it? Must have been on the Square Enix channel. I didn't see any of it, just a highlight list. I'll add it to the list now.

ender44 : Pretty cool?? That game looks amazing. lol I didn't see the hype over The Last Guardian, but I've never played Shadow of The Colossus nor Ico, so that might explain it. Still, it looked like it had potential if they would take it in the right direction. Hopefully they do.

galechild : If you could tell me which games you want release dates on, I'll definitely try to get the dates for you.
yoshirulez! : They showed KH3 and I missed it? Must have been on the Square Enix channel. I didn't see any of it, just a highlight list. I'll add it to the list now.

There was 2 Wii U titles you forgot to mention: Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash and Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. Other than that, I think you pretty much covered everything.

As far as what I'm excited about, I'm looking forward to Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem and of course Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I'm now thinking about buying a PS4 just so I can buy that game.
