So, for the past few weeks, there was the new icon for Windows on the bottom of my screen, next to Flag for where issues show up. So, I got tired of seeing it, so I clicked on it, guessing that it might actually be important. It was actually a prompt to reserve my Windows 10 copy for free, since I have a Windows 8 laptop currently running 8.1 . 

So, I got an email confirming my free reservation, and it says July 29th. And, because I reserved it in advance, it will download automatically. 

I'm actually excited for this. I really want to try the hologram feature.

Although I've had a fine experience with Windows 8 and 8.1 I went ahead and opted in to the Free Win 10 upgrade. I'm interested to see how it performs overall. Especially at Launch.

thing1 : That is a false rumor. As long as you have Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 and you claim the free upgrade within a year, this is a free upgrade for life. Only business users will have to pay for the upgrade to Enterprise edition.

Jordanv78 : Actually somebody from vizzed told me that it was free for a year then you have to pay. Honestly I can't download it anyways atm.. My question to you Jordan is if I can't download it for an entire year will I have to pay for it after  the year is up? I honestly don't feel like it's worth downloading it then uninstalling it.

Once you upgrade it. You own it. There's no reason to un-install anything. It's totally free.

I've already reserved my copy. I considered getting it early via the technical preview (insider program), as I know my way around my computer enough to find things, but decided against it as I'm still not experienced enough to find things that the other hundreds of thousands of insiders wouldn't find. No point, so I stuck with 8.1.

Now that it's about to be released, though, I'm stoked. Sure, we'll lose Windows Media Player, but Microsoft has released alternatives that are just as good, imo. Making it a free upgrade restored a lot of my faith in them, they are throwing away a TON of potential income by making it free. I'm just hoping it isn't limited to the point where I HAVE to purchase the add-ons, because that would suck lol.

I reserved my copy. I'm actually kinda excited for June 29th, because Windows 7 is getting old.
There's nothing wrong with Windows 7 (in fact, it's better than Windows 8 ), but I think Windows 10 will be okay. I mean, the actual Start menu is back, so that's a step in the right direction!

I'm personally not sad to See Windows Media player go away. I've used VLC player for years because it's been 100x better for as long as I can remember anyways. Plus, VLC is free.

I went through a lot of hassle trying to get stuff to work with window 8.1 when I transferred my hard drive from my old laptop to this one. The old laptop was Win 7, and the hard drive crashed.

I fear that I will run into a lot of similar problems with Win 10 after I just now got used to Win 8.1 and got everything set up like it was with Win 7.

I, like you reserved Win 10, I am also quite excited for win 10, as you said I think it's gonna be a hybrid of win 7 and 8, now, I like win 7, and I like win 8, and mixing them together is a very good idea.

As for media player going away, I've had good times with it, but I'm not sad to see it go, there are a lot of good alternatives.

Yeah, I reserved it about a week ago. I am really looking forward to the much needed upgrade. I'm glad it will be coming in soon. I don't really care that windows media player will go away because there will be better alternatives to replace it.
