Welcome to the (very late) March 2015 edition of the VSM, your destination for an overview of all things Sony. Each month we bring you a brief look at several of the most recent Console War coverage* As always we're going to first cover the progress of the console war over the past month. Again, remember that console war coverage stays two to three weeks behind the VSM release date. As a final note, I ran across an error in last month's console war coverage, and as a result this month's will begin a week earlier, making it appear that the same week that ended last month's coverage begins this one. This is not the case however, and I apologize for any confusion it caused. Now off to war! January 4th - 10th PS4 - 188,089 ( -51%) XBox One - 89,206 ( -55%) Wii U - 49,543 -65% PS3 - 51,813 ( -55%) XBox 360 - 25,231 ( -58%) Wii - 5,178 ( -53%) Vita - 50,473 ( -57%) The PS4 leads with over half (approximately 57.5%) of all console sales this week, while the XBox One nabs just over twenty-seven percent of console sales, and Wii U places last of the big three with only around fifteen percent of all console sales this week. Meanwhile in last gen console sales, the PS3 claims just over sixty-three percent of sales, while XBox 360 takes away roughly thirty percent of sales and the Wii makes up for around six percent of last gen console sales on the week. January 11th - 17th PS4 - 149,663 ( -20%) XBox One - 71,885 ( -19%) Wii U - 41,969 ( -15%) PS3 - 43,445 ( -16%) XBox 360 - 21,260 ( -16%) Wii - 3,464 ( -33%) Vita - 37,922 ( -25%) This week sees the PS4 dropping in sales, losing a fifth of their sales totals from last week, and while it still passes the XBox One by a large amount (literally over twice as many sales as the XBox One), the XBox One lost fewer sales this week than the PS4 did, dropping by one percent less (-19%) than did the PS4, thus gaining some ground. However the total losses between the two weeks covered so far balance out to the PS4 losing around three percent less than the XBox One, putting the XBox One ever so slightly behind so far on the month. These numbers change rather drastically without warning however, so they mean next to nothing unless substantial changes happen consistently. Finally the Wii U places third with approximately thirty-six percent fewer sales than the XBox One, but loses less ground in weekly sales percentages than both the PS4 and XBox One, with a drop of only fifteen percent. Last Gen consoles have the PS3 leading with well over twice as many sales as the XBox 360, and the Wii having around a seventh of the sales that the 360 enjoyed. The Vita drops by another quarter (1/4) in sales this week. January 18th - 24th PS4 - 137,345 ( -8%) XBox One - 72,808 ( +1%) Wii U - 35,960 ( -14%) PS3 - 47,143 ( +9%) XBox 360 - 20,647 ( -3%) Wii - 3,213 ( -7%) Vita - 32,693 ( -14%) This week the PS4 drops another eight percent in weekly sales but still outsells the XBox One (which incidentally was the only new-gen system --console or handheld-- to increase in sales over the past week) by approximately sixty-five percent, while the XBox One gains one percent over it's sales on the previous week and moves over twice as many units as the third place contender, the Wii U. And in last gen system wars, the PS3 crushes the competition, winning roughly sixty-six percent of last gen console sales on the week, and becomes the only system of any generation this week (aside from the XBox One) to gain in sales in week-over-week comparison, moving a healthy 47,143 units and passing it's sales last week by a nice nine percent. Meanwhile the 360 this week passes the Wii by approximately 17,000 units. The Vita drops another fourteen percent in week-on-week sales. January 25th - 31st PS4 - 149,987 ( +9%) XBox One - 78,788 ( +8%) Wii U - 37,239 ( +4%) PS3 - 45,241 ( -4%) XBox 360 - 23,176 ( +12%) Wii - 3,055 ( -5%) Vita - 27,715 ( -15%) PS4 jumps a nice bit in week-on-week sales this week (9%), claiming just over fifty-five percent of the New-gen console sales, while the XBox One jumps an equally impressive eight percent in sales moving just over twice as many units as the Wii U. In the last gen market, the PS3 doubles sales of it's leading competitor despite dropping four percent in sales this week, meanwhile the XBox 360 jumps twelve percent in sales, putting out over 20,000 more systems than the Wii. The Vita loses a devestating fiften percent this week in week-on-week sales. February 1st - 7th PS4 - 158,107 ( +5%) XBox One - 82,604 ( +5%) Wii U - 44,183 ( +19%) PS3 - 44,161 ( -3%) XBox 360 - 26,138 ( +13%) Wii - 3,267 ( +7%) Vita - 25,760 ( -7%) In our final week the PS4 gains another five percent, posting just under twice the amount of console sales as the XBox One, while the Wii U falls behind with just over half of the sales of the XBox One. Last gen sales see the PS3 still leading as it claims roughly sixty percent of last gen console sales, while the 360 moves nearly seven times as many units as the Wii. Finally the Vita drops another seven perrcent in weekly sales. *Hardware sales numbers do not include used systems Software Sales* Here We'll track total game sales on each console of the past two generations, as well as the Vita. PS3 leads the way this week in last gen systems with nearly 300,000 more game sales than XBox 360, and Wii walks away with over 500,000 fewer game sales than the 360. The Vita lost 21% of it's game sales in comparison to the previous week. January 18th - 24th PS4 Games - 960,912 XBox One Games - 498,482 Wii U Games - 294,354 PS3 Games - 1,417,460 XBox 360 Games - 802,355 Wii Games - 344,256 Vita Games - 191,246 The PS4 gains 2% this week in game sales, while the XBox One gains 2% as well, and the Wii U drops 8%. The PS3 gains an impressive 20% this week in software sales, while the 360 and Wii both drop by 10%. The Vita finally enjoying an up week as it were, gains 1% in game sales on the week. A small victory for the struggling handheld. January 25th - 31st PS4 Games - 1,206,251 XBox One Games - 605,522 Wii U Games - 265,347 PS3 Games - 1,119,917 XBox 360 Games - 760,931 Wii Games - 329,758 Vita Games - 174,092 This week the PS4 takes first (and even outsells the PS3 in software for once this month), more than doubling the sales of the second place XBox One, while the XBox One sales lead over the Wii U mirrors those statistics. The PS3 outsells second place by over 350,000 games, while the 360 moves over 7.5 thousand titles, and the Wii posts just over 300,000 game sales. The Vita loses it's gained ground with around a nine percent drop. The Vita again dropping just over eight percent in game sales this week continues to struggle on. *Software sales totals do not include used game sales Upcoming PS3 Games Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty : You're working one day doing the same old thing as always. Rated: T Developer:Just Add Water Developments Publisher:Just Add Water Developments Battlefield Hardline : The latest entry in the Battlefield series, Hardline focuses on the battle between law enforcement and criminals. It's cops and robbers like you used to play, on the next level. Only this time with guns, blood, violence,...crime...okay, maybe it's nothing like that at all... My thoughts: The only game shown during the first half of E3 2015 that looked interesting to me, Hardline promises a lot of fun by way of multiplayer modes, and boasts some impressive visual moments. As first person shooters go, this one looks like one of the best I've seen in a while. I'm not into First Person Shooters though, so my opinion there doesn't mean much really. Battlefield Hardline is set to release on March 17th Rated: M Developer: Visceral Games Publisher: Electronic Arts Bladestorm: Nightmare : Bladestorm is revisited, this time including not only the original game's content, but also online multiplayer, and the new Nightmare campaign. My thoughts : I think it's fair to assume that we all know that I'm opposed to games like this one, but I will praise one thing here: the fact that this game's "Definitive edition" actually adds in enough significant Devil May Cry -- Definitive Edition is set to release on the 17th. How about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel? Well now you can get them both bundled into one when you pick up your copy of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. My thoughts : This is just sad. Releasing a game, then shortly thereafter re-releasing it and the one before it as a set? Now remakes I can understand, but making a new game and maybe a year later releasing it again makes it seem like you're milking the fans. But if the fans are okay with it, who am I to judge? Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is set to release on the 24th. Rated: M Developer: Gearbox Software Publisher: 2K Games Bloodborne : Find your way to the answers behind all of the madness around you as you work your way through the streets of Yharnam, a city ravaged with a quickly spreading illness. Developer: Omega Force Publisher: Tecmo Koei Axiom Verge : Being hailed as "PlayStation's own Metroid", Axiom Verge is a retro style 2D action game and places a heavy focus on maze navigation and exploration. My thoughts : I've yet to check this one out, but being called PlayStation's Metroid is a pretty big compliment (and threat to Nintendo if accurate). If indeed this is anywhere near an accurate descr Axiom Verge is set to release on the 31st. MLB 15: The Show: See MLB 15: The Show under Upcoming PS3 Games. Upcoming Vita Games Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo : An Action-RPG, Damascus Gear puts you in the role of a Mech operator, fighting the enemy with high-tech equipment, and saving the world or something else that's important probably. My thoughts : Finally a good looking mech game. I love a good Action RPG as well as the idea of Mech games, and to see this one releasing as a Vita exclusive is just the icing on the cake. If it manages to deliver what it's trying to, we'll have a great Vita exclusive, and one that could go a long way toward justifying the purchase of the handheld for those who are on the fence about it. Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo is set to release on the 24th. Rated: T Developer: A+ Games Publisher: Arc System Works Lego Ninjago: Shadow Of Ronin : Enter the world of Lego's Ninjago and use your blocky lego ninja abilities and dragons and mechs, Oh my! For more information, see this entry in the PlayStation Blog All quotes are taken from the PlayStation blog Project Morpheus You probably remember the big news about Project Morpheus, Sony's VR endeavor, from last year. We now have a release goal: first quarter 2016, or one year from now. Sony certainly knows how to keep us looking forward for the next big moment in PlayStation gaming, don't they? As soon as we finally get the thing they've kept us waiting for, they suddenly have another steak dangling in front of us with yet another "not until next year!" label on it. Not only do we get a release goal, we also get a look into just how Morpheus is shaping up. And while I'm slow to buy into the hype for three reasons, namely that the hype comes from Sony employees (it's easy to hype and be hyped about your own products), the fact that hype almost always makes a product sound far better than it is, and the fact that I typically hate VR, I still can't help but feel far more hopeful about Morpheus than I was last year. However, I approach this one with caution, and I reccomend you do the same. After all, we've seen several attempts at this tech before, and all of them have failed. And even if one or more of these new VR tech attempts succeed, it will likely be a long while before we see any large games that play well. Still, at the right price, I might actually try this out if it's reviews claim it to be half as good as these guys make it sound. New images of Morpheus: Side View It's definitely more compact and sporting a sleeker, more comfortable looking design And finally, how it looks in action PlayStation Rumor Mill -PS4 Slim to be announced this E3 and released later this year Rumors that Sony plans to reveal the PS4 Slim and give us a release date of late 2015 or early 2016 abound thanks to the gigantic rumor mill that is the internet. These rumors are supported by the fact that every Sony console since the PSX has recieved a miniature, or "slim" version. They are further supported by the fact that the gap between these slim console launches has steadily been shrinking, and with the Vita we saw a slim version only two years after it's launch. If the pattern holds true, then we should indeed see the PS4 slim announced in June, and released between September and Mid-November. This new model is rumored to possibly bolster the current PS4 specs as well, allowing for more 1080p titles. Likelihood : I'm giving this one a 90% chance of being true. And I'll go as far as to say that if the rumored spec As for the specs boost, I'm iffy on that. It could be accurate, but it could also just be fan hype. I won't hold my breath on it, though it does seem that they would improve at least some of the specs a little, and Sony themselves have confirmed that it will indeed include some new features (though to my knowledge they have not confirmed anything concerning when it will be revealed or released). Hopefully this will result in a standard PS4 price reduction along with it. -Titanfall 2 to be released on the PS4 Okay, so this one isn't a rumor, more like a fact. The developers of Titanfall have announced that Titanfall 2 will release on both XBox and Sony systems. The reason for the drop of exclusivity was reportedly the lost sales on the first Titanfall due to the overwhelming success of the PS4. -PS4 price reduction This one goes hand in hand with the Slim rumor most likely, but it has been rumored that Sony will drop the PS4 price by around ten percent. Whether there is anything to back these rumors up or not, I have no idea. Likelihood : I'm going to put out another 90% chance on this one for a few reasons: 1. I think the slim version of the PS4 will be released this year, and as such it only makes sense that the standard PS4 price would be lowered somewhat. 2. The start of year three is a typical and safe time to start lowering the prices on healthy consoles. 3. Finally, since the XBox One's price was lowered to $329 late last year in an effort to fight back against Sony's record setting sales, it stands to reason that Sony --though obviously not intimidated (nor affected) by the XBox price drop-- will follow suit this year. -The Vita will begin selling better in 2015 Part rumor, part prediction, rumors of new AAA titles releasing on the Vita as well as talk of some price reductions, has resulted in predictions that the Sony handheld has yet to see it's best days. Likelihood : I'm not too confident in this one sadly. It seems too farfetched to me to assume that some miracle game will spark interest in the Vita enough to significantly improve it's yearly sales. I'll put this one at around a 20% chance of happening, though I wish I could honestly give it a much more optimistic rating. I do think that the Vita will continue to move around the same number of units that it has been so far this year, but no more. Fin! That does it for this month's VSM. See you next month (hopefully on time), when we'll have: -More Console War Coverage (of course) -Sales info* -A new sub-article* -The return of MSRP listings on upcoming games* and more! Until then, Keep on gaming, and keep it Sony. *Content subject to availability Console War coverage* As always we're going to first cover the progress of the console war over the past month. Releasing a game, then shortly thereafter re-releasing it and the one before it as a set? Now remakes I can understand, but making a new game and maybe a year later releasing it again makes it seem like you're milking the fans. But if the fans are okay with it, who am I to judge? My thoughts : Finally a good looking mech game. I love a good Action RPG as well as the idea of Mech games, and to see this one releasing as a Vita exclusive is just the icing on the cake. If it manages to deliver what it's trying to, we'll have a great Vita exclusive, and one that could go a long way toward justifying the purchase of the handheld for those who are on the fence about it. *Content subject to availability |
