Hello all. I know this one is going to get your gears turning mentally. I hope to see some interesting answers to this. Ok, so on with the subject and enough rambling. We all have had different things we believed in as a child, whether they were true or not, that we learned as adults or growing up was not the case. Such as one I had when I was young that girls got pregnant by kissing guys. I know funny and nowhere near the truth but there you have an example of childhood beliefs.
What I want to know is what were yours and what was your reaction to finding out they were true or untrue ?

One of my childhood beliefs, and I'm sure most others shared this experience with me. Is the belief that Santa Clause is real. I found out the truth when I was about 12 years old. I was kind of late, I know. However, it didn't really affect me all that much.

When I was a child I believe that the clouds are raining because they are sad and lonely, I think that they have emotions like us. Then I knew that I was wrong and shocked that the cloud rains because it undergo a process of science well science can explain almost everything that is why I believe in science more than myself and other people says. Now I know that.

During my childhood, I had the most common belief for kids who live in my country (United States): Santa Claus. I found out when I was 11 that he didn't exist, but I'd thought so already. I'd already thought he didn't exist because of one of my other beliefs being proven false, which I'll describe below.

I also believed in the tooth fairy, but one night I got a note supposedly from the tooth fairy that made me suspicious. It was TYPED, and there was a spelling mistake on it. I showed this to my parents and told them I don't believe in the tooth fairy anymore. My parents confessed that Dad typed it and the tooth fairy wasn't real.

I had two beliefs when I was a Child.

The first one was when I was about 3 or 4 I used to think thunder was caused by clouds bumping each other. When I was 6 I found that thunder is caused by lightning strikes. It did not effect me as I was into meteorology at the age of 3 it just fascinated my love for Weather.

The second was believing that Santa Claus was real. At age 8 I learned the truth. It did not effect me that much as to me I learned the true meaning of Christmas. 3 years later at the age of 11 I would accept Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior

Yeah I have would have to say as a kid I also had the belief in Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, and the monster under the bed as well I lost the Santa Claus and Tooth Fairy belief after catching my parents putting the presents under the tree and also because older kids were telling me he didn't exist ). I remember being told heaven was up in the sky by my parents at a funeral we went to and I asked very loudly, " Mommy how do they stay up there and not go splat on the ground ? " This was laughed at but for quite awhile after that I would look up for falling people a lot when I went outside for any reason. I also remember believing that if a person held a fart in too long they would explode ( got that from something my grandfather once said ). Last one I can think of would be that if you ate any kind of seeds ( like an apple seed or a walnut ) that you would eventually have a tree grow in your belly. That last one scared me a lot for awhile and took a long time for my parents to convince me that it was not true.

Things I believed in when I was younger?

a lot of things...

I used to believe that the moon was a large stone floating above me, that's one of the stranger things I believed in

I always used to believe that trees came alive at night and just spoke to each other.

buses used to scare me because I believed they where explosives.

my reactions to the first few ones made me feel stupid and the bus one just made me happy.

that's all I can remember right now... I will edit this if I remember anything else.

Aside from believing in the common things like Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, Easter bunny, etc., I thought that thunder was caused by the angels in heaven playing bowling....pretty strange, I know.

I also used to think that teachers actually lived at school, and that gunpoint, as in "being held at gunpoint" was a place. I'm sure there are a few other silly little things I used to believe in that I just can't remember at the moment....

I stopped believing in the majority of these things when I was about 6 or 7 or so.

Interesting topic by the way, this brings back many childhood memories.

I once saw a picture of Madonna surrounded by Black men with the caption "Madonna breaks all taboos". I though taboo refereed to the men...

Also, I used to believe that what we saw on TV was completely fake; the people didn't exist in real life.

This might be missing the point entirely, and might get pretty dark, but as a kid, I believed in "justice" and I believed in "authority".

When I was younger, I thought the general idea, was that bad people would get bad things done to them, and that good people would get good things done to them. It was a childish notion, as I'm sure we're all aware.

I obviously no longer believe in those things, and justice and authority have given way to corruption and greed.

On a lighter note, I also once believed the moon was made of cheese. So it wasn't all depressing.

legacyme3 : I feel you my brother, back then the world didn't seem so dark and depressing as it does now.

Apart from thinking that things were black and white, that there was right and wrong and that eventually the ones in the wrong would lose I guess I had the same beliefs as most kids, the easter bunny, santa, tooth fairy.

Hey all. No wrong answer to the question. Seeing a lot of good replies and seems a lot was the same for us all. I thought of some others I had to come in and add. I used to believe that color copiers had little people in them with paint brushes. That every bad person you heard about on the news ( except for ones they described ) were all the same people. I also remembering being convinced that the mailman was the Easter Bunny. My logic for this was because he was the only person who was always coming to our house earlier every morning and the fact that he was always delivering things. Last and the one my family found the funniest was that if you fed a cat dog food or vice versa they would turn into those animals. So I was always sneaking little bits of dog food from our neighbors dog bowl to feed my mom's cats. lol

Hmmm, reading this thread has shown to be pretty interesting. I'm a little bit baffled actually that so many have believed in tooth fairy and/or easter bunny, but maybe that's an american thing. People here in Finland don't usually make their kids believe in those two. Believing in santa claus as a kid is a pretty common thing here though, and some crazy stuff that a child's imagination can make up when he doesn't know how things really are.
I myself didn't really have any weird childhood beliefs, not even santa claus. My mother says she didn't wanna lie to me about that. I can't think of anything (except the thing I wrote about below) weird that I made up by myself either... I guess I was always the kind of kid who'd wanna find out how things are, instead of just making stuff up.
The only thing I can think about is that I didn't realize that meat is muscles as a kid, I thought meat just hanged out somewhere between muscles and bones and didn't serve any biological purpose besides being eaten by me. Well... I also had religious beliefs as a child, but those don't really classify as "childhood beliefs" I guess.

Okay, this one takes a little bit of imagination since I can't/won't post pictures of a place I used to live in. Nor do I even have any to post, otherwise.

Off and on through my childhood me, my mother, and my sister would have to live with my grandparents on about four acres of good 'ol country land. My grandfather had one hell of an imagination, too, he was the cool grandpa people talk about with all the cool stories about literally everything. Anyway, little 6-7 year old me had a bit of an exploration streak in me and I would constantly walk too far away from the house and generally venture down towards the main road.

So my grandfather, in an effort to keep me from being turned into roadkill, decided to concoct this story that there was a mysterious creature known as 'The Wombat' who lived under this bridge that the gravel road leading to the street. Anytime he would hurt himself by accident while working in his shop or doing anything else, he would show me the scar/scrape/cut/whathaveyou and tell me he was attacked by this mythical creature.

Since my grandfather was one hell of a man (he's in his late 60's now and I still wouldn't go toe-to-toe with him if I had to) the fact that there was a monster that could hurt my grandfather scared the bejeezus out of me, and it definitely confined me to the 'front yard' of their house.

Years later I naturally grew out of it, realizing that it was fake, and as it turned out a wombat was actually a real animal which my grandfather nor I actually realized at the time.

Years later I naturally grew out of it, realizing that it was fake, and as it turned out a wombat was actually a real animal which my grandfather nor I actually realized at the time.

mikecr :

After mom told me that Santa Claus is not real and that many of the local Santas were actually local firemen, for the next two years I had this weird mix up that the fire department is some kind of CIA of Santa.

And I also thought that all the people in the world speak Finnish. It is just that we cant hear them properly. That is why when they talk it all sounds as gibberish. Same with Russian and Greek writing. It is in Finnish. It just that way because they are foreigners and not like us.

Thing that comes to my mind the most about the childhood beliefs is.... sigh....

As a 4-5 year old kid, I went through the bookshelf, picked out a Dr. Seuss book, the one about the pants. That book scared me, still does. So creepy.... anyways, that made me believe all long pants were alive and walked on their own and killed people. I couldn't wear long pants for months..... shorts though, perfectly innocent. I have since learned that ALL long pants weren't evil. Sweat pants are okay, but jeans and that stuff, still evil.

Oh, and I used to think Metroid was lame. Never got to play the games at that time though XD
Eggman: Get a load of this!

I was convinced that Russia was located on the moon, because of some russian cartoon that I can't remember and didn't really understand that I watched as a kid, that somehow gave me the impression that it all happened on the moon.

I was shocked to find out Russia is in fact an earth country.
Tell me if you find bugs in this layout.
