Full disclosure: I'm American and I know very little about UK politics.

Simply from what I've read online the past 2 weeks, I think Scotland feels kind of like the American south did in the late 19th century, the only difference being that (most of) Scotland wants to secede peacefully, where as the American south decided to start a war. Scottish opinions differ greatly from the opinions coming out of London.

But the question at hand is whether or not Scotland could survive on its own as a nation. They have profitable resources and a sustainable population. They have a stable government. I think it's worth a shot for sure. How would the UK suffer from losing Scotland, though? What would the diplomatic ties between the two nations be like, had the vote passed for a separation?

This is all moot, of course, because the vote failed to pass and the next one won't be for a very long time...
