I don't think Final Fantasy is overrated. It has been one of the most groundbreaking series in video game history. It's definitely one of the longest-running, and its universe has to be one of the largest. The stories are always epic, and the gameplay is very in-depth. With each new game, Final Fantasy revolutionizes the RPG formula is some way. One standout example of this is Final Fantasy VII. It may not have been as good as everyone claims it to be, but it did establish a new kind of battle system. The series definitely has its flaws, and I'd have to agree with Ver-go-a-go-go that it lost some of its quality after FFVII, but it still deserves its current fame and praise.

Really its annoying

I think it is kinda overrated and I rather play halo then FF

but I world still play it and give it a 6-7 out of 10 (its ture rating)

and I never said the wii was the greatest. (I said it was the best out of the xbox 360 and PS3)

I played the games and they are quite well made (but not best RPG ever ) .

honestly in my opinion all the newer FF games are over rated. I miss the days when it was just SquareSoft, since they became Square-Enix most of their games have been going down hill. Just from my point of view of course

I agree with otaconmajere, ever since square merged with enix the quality of the games has gone down, and it's been more about the money and marketing.

FFXIII has been advertised to death, or at least where I live, and the few people I've talked to who own it say it isn't even that good, and they're final fantasy fanatics.

I've never played FFXI, but from what I hear it was a total money grab, with too many charges on every little thing you did, and you had to buy all kinds of adapters to be able to play it.

Starting at FFX, the games started to not feel like Final Fantasy to me anymore. FFX sort of kept the feel, but FFXII didn't feel like Final Fantasy at all to me. It was a great game, very enjoyable, but it just didn't feel like I was playing Final Fantasy.

Seven has certainly gotten a lot of hype over the years, and yes, it's sort of brought the others down as a result.

My personal favorite has got to be X though, hands down. Even going back to it a few years later, I still think that storyline is masterfully done.

Also, I still laugh a little bit that they added sooo much awkwardness to cutscenes by never saying Tidus' name. I understand customising the names was something of a tradition, and that they didn't want to get rid of that, but I vastly prefferred XII's approach. You're playing a story, so the names are set.

In any case, yes, a teensy bit overrated, but only because the only series I can even think of to have such longevity as an out and out RPG is Dragon Warrior, and that isn't nearly as popular out west as it is in Japan. Final Fantasy deserves top slots for now, if only because it has managed to consistantly create compelling stories.

The switch to 3-D, while some see it as the downfall, was a needed step. Isometric games have been hanging on, like Disgaea, FF Tactics (though that hardly counts), and the like, but true 2-D games just don't cut it these days, and FF did what it had to do. I'm not keen on getting a PS3/Xbox360 to play 13, but I still look forward to seeing how it does.

That is to general of a question to answer effectively. Just like in other threads, people have responded that most FFs are different, some wildly different. But I do think that most the the Final Fantasies are worth the game play and time involved. Not to say every one is at all perfect, but most are far above average.

It became overrated with 7 and up. Not that they're not good. But I agree with the people that say Square went down hill after merging with Enix. Especially 13. It was good, but didn't deserve all the credit gaming sites and magazines give. It deserved a 6 or 7 out of 10. It lacked what basically made FF great. Maybe they'll get back on track with 15 seeing how 14 is gonna be a stupid mmo!

Anyway, I still prefer RPGS that are not too serious like "Paper Mario" or (my favorite) the Mother (Earthbound) series (but I will not play Earthbound (Mother 2) until I am older because of the end boss).

I played FF3 and didn't WANT to get far, I will just come back and update once I PUSH MYSELF to go far.

I voted no because in all the series itself isn't overrated. But FFVII is, very much so, overrated because of the obsessive fans that think 'it's the greatest FF ever because it was the first one I played'. I don't believe it to be anywhere near the best, it's good but certainly not the best.

Something else makes it seem underrated in a way, in my eyes at least, and that's when the fans themselves expect the new ones to be 'absolutely amazing' and when they come out they aren't what the fan was expecting and they automatically assume it's a horrible game. That kind of thinking will get you no satisfaction out of any game ever, just disappointment.

I'm so sick of ever few years hearing "OH MY GOD! YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE NEW FF GAME!" I stopped caring a while ago.. and as an attempt to at least give people the benefit of he doubt I have even tried them all.. and after.. meh.. X its pretty down hill.. Though I think the peak was V.

I Think Some Of Them Are Overratted Like 6 And 7,But There Are Some Like 10,10-2,3,And The Tactic Ones Are Underratted.

Also Many People Make It Seem Better Then It Is(Sephiroth And Cloud Fans)Because There Are Games Just As Good If Not Better Like The Mother (Earthbound) Series,Dragon Warrior,Mario,Zelda,And Kingdom Hearts.Also Final Fantasy 10 Is The Best Live On Tidus And Rikku.

Okay, just because someone says your favorite game is overrated doesn't mean it sucks. It means it gets more credit than it should. In a way, most of the FF games are put in the shadow of the overrated PS1 game known as Final Fantasy 7. I mean, the game needs to keep its fans under control. Is that so hard, PS1 game?

That game aside, much of the series is so unexplored in most cases due to... obsessive fans who even scare the life out of you with their antics. It makes Metallica fanboys look rational, actually. The fans of Final Fantasy VIII have this victim complex often times. I used to be one of those FF8 fans, but I grew out of it.

Final Fantasy is a mixed bag. One game makes you hate the game because of the fanbase in some cases, and the other side of the fanbase is either fans or finding gray hair on their SNES. By that I mean they think 3D is so bad and are like the elderly who complain all the time.

I personally think it's the best series ever and 90% of them have the rating they should have.
