Welcome to the New World!

The year is 1608. Sir Walter Raleigh has been charged with Treason. However, he escapes, and aims to find the one responsible for his imprisonment and clear his name...by blasting through waves of enemies on his hovercraft! Yes, Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony is a mish-mash of history and sci-fi, all blended together wonderfully as a side-scrolling space shooter for our entertainment.

As soon as you boot the game up, you’ll know you’re in for a treat. The dramatic music at the intro sets the powerful, if but ludicrous tone of the game. This is a game that in equal parts takes itself seriously and makes fun of itself. Also, there isn’t much music, but what is there keeps the game intense and fun.

The controls are simple, and are explained through a tutorial in-game: You move around with the keyboard, mouse, or analog stick of a gamepad. Also, there is one button for normal attacks, another for special, and another for the vaunt command. I will discuss this in further detail later.

The levels are beautifully detailed, and feature backgrounds filled with action. Sometimes even enemies will pop out of the background or soldiers will fire to assist you. Every bit of the game is gorgeous to look at. Explosions and the like are rendered in marvelous detail, and really hype up the action of the game.

The game is narrated by Raleigh himself, although you can play as one of four characters, each of which have their own unique ship, with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Beam: Sir Walter Raleigh’s craft. Allows for two types of shots: a weaker, faster spread shot, and a much more powerful beam that causes the ship to move much more slowly. Good for beginners to the space shooter genre. Recommended controller: Gamepad, mouse.

Gunner: John Smith’s craft. Fires a fast basic shot forwards as well as a “cutter” shot in the direction you move while special is held. When special is released, the cutter shot will continue in the same direction it was moving before special is released. Good for those familiar with the genre and want to dive into the game. Recommended controller: Mouse.

Charge: Virginia Dare’s craft. The basic shot is the same as that of the Gunner’s, but the special is different. Instead of cutter shots, this craft charges big balls of energy that are quite powerful when released with the special button. Good for those seeking to rack up lots of points and know their way around the levels. Recommended controller: Gamepad.

Bomber: Joachin Gaunz’s craft. Fires out a medium-speed stream of bullets straight from the craft. These shots can be detonated with the special button to destroy enemies near the blasts. Good for very advanced players skilled with the vaunt command. Recommended controller: Gamepad.

These unique mechanics alone set the game among the great side-scrolling space shooters, but what really sets the game in a class all its own the most is the vaunt command. The game features a gauge for this command: After it is filled all the way by collecting “gears” that drop down the screen from enemies, it can be activated. Activating the vaunt command gives you temporary invulnerability to bullets by creating a circular shield around your craft. It also increases the points you receive and “banks” a certain amount of points. This will continue even after the shield vanishes, but only until the vaunt gauge goes to zero (it drops gradually), or until banked manually into your score by pressing the vaunt button again. If banked manually, then the vaunt gauge cannot be filled again for a brief moment. Also, the time required for the vaunt gauge to drop to zero can be extended by collecting more gears dropped from enemies.

This mechanic must be exploited to get a high score, but it is also essential merely to survive on the higher difficulties. As bullets rain down upon you, knowing when to activate vaunt and when to bank points could keep you alive.

There are five difficulties:

Normal, Difficult, Legendary, Divine, and Judgement, each one so much harder than the last. The final two levels even remove the option of certain difficulties: The first removes Normal, and the last removes Normal and Difficult. In each difficulty, you are given 3 lives, and two continues of 3 lives each, for a total of 9 lives. However, lives work differently in multiplayer.

Three friends can join in the action! In multiplayer, there is a certain revival system in place instead of lives, but the two continues are retained. In this system, when one player dies, he/she has to wait a certain number of seconds or for another player to get an “R” token to respawn, and if all players die before respawning, a continue will have to be used. The “R” tokens are found by defeating enemies, and cause one or all fallen players to respawn automatically. The number of seconds required to respawn, however; goes up as the difficulty is increased.

Also, new things can be bought in the “Shoppe” from gears you’ve collected, including Gauntlet Mode, Hardcore Mode, Story-Farce, the Judgement difficulty, and four unlockable challenge packs that test your mettle.

Gauntlet Mode challenges the player to complete all the levels back to back, with the exclusion of the the final one or two levels, depending on the difficulty set. It must be bought after the game is completed.

Hardcore Mode changes the game in multiplayer. When Hardcore Mode is set, players no longer auto-respawn after a certain number of seconds. Instead, “R” tokens must be collected, or the player must wait until the others die to play again upon a new continue.

Story-Farce is as it states: It’s a new form of the story, this time in the form of a farce or joke. It really helps to lighten the brooding, dark mood of the game. It also must be bought after the game is completed.

The Judgement difficulty is the hardest difficulty, and must be unlocked by beating every level on Divine difficulty.

Lastly, the challenge packs add flavor to a game that already felt complete without them. The first challenge pack is already unlocked, and the remaining four must be bought after completing a certain number of challenges. They are fun and fairly diverse, and help to pad the game with more content.

Basically, Jamestown is hardcore. It is short, but is padded with plenty of fun content, and is quite replayable. And it is definitely one of the greatest space shooters ever made.

Presentation: 9.5/10
Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 8/10
Gameplay: 10/10
Lasting Appeal: 10/10

Overall: 9.3/10

Note: There is DLC available for this game, entitled Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot, which adds 3 new ships to the game. I haven’t tried it, but considering the quality of the rest of the game, and its low price, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to those who love the game.

Also, this might be my last review for a while. I've been pretty burned out lately, and don't know when I'll be able to write a good review.

supernerd117 : This is another good review of yet another game that I have not played.
As for this one, I have never even heard of this game before, but it sounds like it could be somewhat interesting, but not the kind of game that I would like to play for a long time. I might check out a few videos if I get a chance, you did a great job on this review.
