Date and Time (2014 5/30 20:25) ~ We all know sonic the hedgehog by now he's been an Internet sensation for a while though his new games have lost some old fans...(2006 10/15) ~ It seems like some of our fanbase has died after this game with the title glitch fest has been made by Sega and released earlier this year...(2001) ~ Sega has really put the "Sega" name to it's golden magazine because their recent adventure games have been a hit sensation and we love them both dearly unfortunately rumor of our beloved Dreamcast may die off....(1996 2/10) ~ Our blue blur attitude is brighter than ever after only just 2 year of having 4 amazing genesis games I'm looking forward to this year's Sonic X-Treme coming out for the Sega Saturn! They say it'll compete with the upcoming title Super Mario 64  so I'm excited (1991 1/1) So have you heard this company called Sega is thinking of creating a new video game character to bring to the market, they say it'll be a hedgehog but they're not quite sure on the name yet hopefully it'll be amazing! *Spin dashes out of 91' back into 2014* Phew that was quite a trip "!" oh you guys are here finally I was just looking back at my hedgehog's past and what went on during then why not join me as I talked about this game which put me into this recollection phase c'mon don't be a slow-mo if you're good I'll give you and Tails a chili dog, so let's speed keed

                                                                 *Jumps back into 1990*

Watching gaming's past progress through quality!
    --------------------------------------------------------------

In case you are expecting this to be a more so present timeline of sonic (A.k.A ~ Sonic Heroes/Shadow The Hedgehog) then sorry but you'll need to look elsewhere as this is a place where your inner childhood comes out to play with the older sonic the hedgehog classics strafing from his very first appearance all the way to Sonic & Knuckles. So therefore the graphics nor the rest of this review shall follow gamecube standards but more so collection standards so instead of  -3 points we'll only take away 1 point. Going into things though this shall be an interesting game to review for graphics standards as the graphics of the games in chronological order are actually getting progressively nicer...for instance: you take a look at Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, we can easily see that the graphics are of course better since one came out in 94' and the other came out in 92' which means Sonic 3 is superior however; we can also take a look on the flipside and say Sonic & Knuckles looks better than the original Sonic the Hedgehog therefore the graphics should go down due to quality.

Basically as I'll describe briefly: Sonic 1 ~ while it looks great and the level design for 1991 is impressive sonic's color
scheme does seem a little to dark blue almost making him look pale in comparison to his peach colored body, the levels themselves were very innovative though and could be called eye-candy to some players.

Sonic 2 ~ Someone looked that the last game and agreed that this hedgehog looked a little pale blue so this time they plastered him with bright blue paint and took it a little overboard even with tails he appeared a little to bright for the surrounding lands color, again the level design was very unique and nicely crafted this time involving more interactive background effects a good upgrade on Sega's part.

Sonic 3 ~ This time it seems they got the look of both the hedgehog hero down to a plate and got him into the perfect ocean blue color of fur and the level design made very impressively appealing with more twist and turns than the entrance to Knothole Village.

So that's the main and really the only part where I'll separate the games out, either way as well can see the games depending on how you can play them either get better or worse so the graphics for a "recollection" gamecube game certainly look good so I'm willing to allow 8 out of 10 points here for it's looks!

Bringing our ears, back into a child's past
     -----------------------------------------------------

I'm sure there are plenty of others whom grew up around the lovely Mega Drives soundchip and has let it become a part of their gaming core. But that's not all you'll be feeling as there are also new themes made for this game but sort of presented in the same 16-bit style you would come to expect from the games found here, and as such it draws us fans even closer towards to game until our face inevitably gets stuck to our television screen to which I'll go and describe some of my favorite themes/songs found inside this game.

     ~Intro~

Ok I'll be honest here if my intro didn't hook you into the game, then the actual game intro should hook you into either watching it completely or at least tempt you even if just to the slightest degree into pressing the start button to being your adventure as you see gameplay images of the old sonic games you'll be playing in only a few moments with such a nice and somber tone at the beginning before ultimately picking it up with a strong electronic beat which continues for most of the song as the beat continues to change throughout!

     ~Extras Menu~

At times when you just need to relax sometimes you put on certain ambiance type themes like Jolly Roger Bay or even Song of Healing wherein your heart and mind just get put as ease at you look at something, then this also won't fail to impress you either and who knows it may become one of your most favorite songs for the particular situation above. As inside this menu you can take a look at the SEGA Sonic character bio's or look at the Archie comic book covers, either way you'll leave this menu always wanting to come back again some other time (though for some people it may sound sad so who knows for sure).

      ~Games~

Moving onto the games themselves if you're a fan of retro music or just an older Sega fan then you'll definitely enjoy the wide array of soundtrack to be found in this game, form the frolicky filled lands of Green Hill Zone in Sonic 1 to the downtone and serious steel of Metropolis Zone of Sonic 2, to even the highlighting but also frantic feeling of Sky Sanctuary..I'm sure there will be at least a couple or more that you'll fall in love with even if you're not a fan of this series!

Gamers or Non-gamers alike I think we can all agree that this music is definitely of acceptable quality and personally in my opinion I prefer it over "most" gamecube games so I can't help but feel this deserves nothing less than a 9 out of 10!

Reminiscent Graphics, Tear pulling music, but same fun for new audiences
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're a fan of the old genesis style games and missed hearing/playing them over the years or have just wanted to get that actual experience again straight from your gaming household *Looks at GenesisJunkie* then Mega collection will definitely 100% on my light speed dash oath, you'll enjoy this game and it'll be worth the money that you pay for it! There are several reasons as to why I find this game to be a hedgehog's gaming favorite to which I'll explain some in detail and others in short because I want to save it for the depth section as well, just so I can spread things out evenly...so if you're ready let's go past the signpost and enter the next stage of explanation!

      ~ Playable games ~

Right when you enter the games menu you have quite a collection of games to play each from the famous and renowned Genesis/Mega Drive, with the games ranging from the normal Sonic The Hedgehog games and their sequels but then the game throws a burrowbot your way and gives you other classics such as Sonic Spinball to even Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. There are also a few hidden secret games which I'll mention later on so there are many things to do inside this game just like the previously reviewed Gems Collection, just like before though you can easily unlock the games by playing certain other ones a certain amount of times or by having a certain game memory located on your memory card. Either way there are many classics to await you within this disc!

As we can see here this game will bring you back to your favorite childhood memories or just some fascinating nostalgic games from the 2 decades before us, therefore I can only deduce from my super sonic knowledge is that the addictiveness deserves a 9 out of 10!

Older stories from the past, still fulfilling in the future!
      ----------------------------------------------------------------

*Running around South Island* ....? *looks and see's viewers & stops in tracks* Sorry fellow Mobian readers I didn't notice you there, I'm just going for my daily routine of running and I figured why not run around the past adventures I went through such as the shores of South Island and Emerald Hill Zone remembering all the times I spent on these stages alongside all the dastardly plans I had to face from that vile Dr Robotnik. Between the time when he stole all the animals in Green Hill Zone and forced them to work in robotic machines and I had to face him off in the depths of Robotropolis to even the time after defeating not only his newest monster Mecha Sonic and his mechanical fortress the Death Egg but then miraculously having it land on Angel Island.
There are also a few other games on here with different stories as well at least 2 of them don't even deal with me so for instance two games I can name without handing out everything about this game are as follow: Sonic Spinball ~ A new spin on my tales wherein I invade yet another one of Robotniks fortresses known as the Veg-O-Fortress and I'm forced to fight my way up on a pinball table in order to reach that mad doctor, yeah...me a hedgehog becoming a pinball...I know I can curl up into one but who thought of that bright idea!
Ristar ~ This game takes place believe it or not on several different planets that help keep the solar system in place, unfortunately this place seems to have just as bad of luck as the Flicky filled paradise of Mobius since this place is being attacked by an dark evil creature known as...Greedy...no I swear on my chili dogs that I didn't make that up. He sends attack forces to these planets in order to take them over and put the solar planets in peril in order to keep this plan possible he attacks and kidnaps the king, his son Ristar soon finds out about this and heads off to save the planets and defeat this horrid parasite.

These memories are what you'll be experiencing when you play this collection with the fastest blue hedgehog on the planet, so if my gut is telling me to give this a score of 10 out of 10 for the stories!

Bringing justice to the meaning of the word Mega Collection!
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hooo call my a slow mo or strap some robuttnik power ok my slick kicks, because this game certainly will take many hours and who knows depending on the player even years of their favorite memories into this one game as their is so much to be found here, in my opinion it overwhelms Gems Collection with the variety and is more so like I said for older genesis fans which means that mostly things from 94' and below are to be found here, including the following:

       ~Extras~

If the events that have already transpired in this review haven't taken you back, then this mode surely will do that in a super
sonic second! In this section we can take a look back at older sonic comic cover like I mentioned before but you can also look at character bio's where it gives a short note about them and their older model color sheet, alongside videos that you can watch of sonic's history or video game previews. The most memorable thing about this mode at least for myself is that they allow you to read the very first couple of sonic books made by Archie Comics back in the early 1990's, mixed in with the Extras menu music that I described below this is a really amazing feel to read the book while having that soothing music in the foreground.

      ~ Games ~

For those fans that enjoyed the game mentioned at the beginning of this section, then hot hedgehog onion rings you'll enjoy this collection since it has just about the same amount of games (well except that this one has one more additional game so 12 games) now for those of you lucky enough to live in Japan and maybe Europe not 100% but you could get yet ANOTHER 2 games and these 2 for the most part are highly popular or underrated: Comix Zone and The Ooze! So if you're in a mood for some classic 90's Sega games or are looking to buy this game then you're in for a collectional treat!

I need to end this very lengthy section here as I feel I'm going into too much hehe "Depth!" haha ok the blue blur's awful humor is getting to me, so this time for real I'll end this section of with a 10 out of 10 score for depth.

Huge amount of enjoyment and fun, and same difficult from before!
       -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking back on my previous review *pulls out chili dog* woops that's not it *Pulls out rings* I don't need speed here! *pulls out memory quill* ahh here it is, I stated that you could use similar saves to save states found on this site which made things pretty easy for about half to 3/4th's of all the games on the collection therefore kind of making the difficulty selection pointless, this game however nullifies that effect and gives it the good clean difficulty from the past which basically makes it feel like you're playing on the Genesis (sorry no saying your name this time Junkie). All of the games mostly have the same amount of difficulty since they're almost all platformers minus 3 or 4 games *4 depending on if you count Flicky* so as such I'll take a basic Sonic the hedgehog game compared it to a second game and base the score off of that.

In my eyes the very first Sonic game on Genesis has to be the worst for difficulty as it always seems to be the hardest for me to complete as at least with Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles you could have a partner with you with you to help you out so for me the difficulty for the very first game has to be either an 8 or 9 out of 10 while the sequels and other games on the disc have to be around  a 6 or 7 out of ten since they are mostly fair this time around.

So that about covers up the difficulty, it may not have alot of detail but like I said alot of the games follow the same basic route so no need to explain it more than twice, I'll end off my score here with a nice but equally manageable 8 out of 10!

*Looking up at the river seaside*....nic......Onic.....SONIC! Huh what's that? Oh it's just you viewers again sorry just busy reminiscing again you know with how I started off here and now I've returned one last time to get another look *Looks at Power Ring* Guess I can dwell on the past forever but it's always best to appreciate what you remember at the same time, I'll never forget my hedgehog youth...uncle chuck...the freedom fighters...and most importantly of all the fans that followed me through my first adventures. Well it was nice to run in these again at the very least *puts Classic Sonic shoes away* we've walked many a miles you and I but it's time for us to say goodbye forever, I sure do have a Mega Collection of memories that will stay in this hedgehog's heart of perfection *Spin Dashes out of South Island & past Knothole*

Well it was nice to run in these again at the very least *puts Classic Sonic shoes away* we've walked many a miles you and I but it's time for us to say goodbye forever, I sure do have a Mega Collection of memories that will stay in this hedgehog's heart of perfection *Spin Dashes out of South Island & past Knothole*

mohammedroxx3 : Does this summon work?

Now for the review.

sonicthehedgehog57 : Another great review man! I like your writing style, it's unique and I think no one do it the same way. I don't know that much about Sonic sadly but your review was nice to read. Keep writing 'em!

sonicthehedgehog57 : Sheesh, another one of your really long reviews. Unfortunatly, this is one of the few gamecube games that I have not played, so I dont know much about it. I really like how you put so much effort into dividing the various categories, such as Intro Extra Menu and Games, and then other types of dividers.

You might want to put the grades for each category in larger sizes and change the color so it would be a bit easier to see the grades.

Other than that, it's a great review. It does appear that the paragrpahs are all over the place, but you did a great job with this. 1/1

I haven't finished reading your review (or really made too much of a dint) and normally don't post intill I finish but I just wanted to say, so fare so good man, as always. I really like the Sonic compilation games, it gives the best games ever made to a new generation that may not have got to experience them and I enjoy them myself. I have a TON of Sonic games but I still like to get compilation games. I am really wanting to get the Xbox version.

juuldude : yeah I enjoy the way I write my reviews as well and it seems others do too so it's a win-win for vizzed, though they may turn out long they're still entertaining which is still good in my opinion. Anyway glad you enjoyed this review as well hope I'll see you again next month.

imamonster : hahaha XD well you hear the man..erm..monster Eirinn (I know you already featured it but roll with this one).

zanderlex : Glad you enjoyed it, it is one of the few gems on the system that I really enjoy especially if you're a sonic fan. Yeah I figured since it's a compilation game that I could divide things different from a normal game, I'll make sure I put the grade in bigger text on the next review if it's a problem to read as you say. Once again thanks for tuning into the review zander

A user of this : Thanks, glad it was entertaining and x3 at least it wasn't as long as the other one right?  (Unintentionally long by the way) I'm glad you also enjoy the writing style I use I look forward to seeing you next month.

GenesisJunkie : Exactly which is why when I found this game as a child (I believe I was around 12-13) and I saw the original Genesis games I was like "hey I've always wondered about these games :3 maybe I could try it out" nevertheless it became one of my favorite Gamecube games x3 and I agree with you they do bring a new generation great games from the past and sometimes helps refresh the generation into
older games like itself again, anyway glad you enjoyed the review and hope you like the Intentional naming in there ;P

sonicthehedgehog57 :

Well, not a bad review, it did stretch enough to cover he games, my only point on advice, is that you might wish to cover the gameplay a bit more. Other than that you did well, I like how you talked about the collection itself, and the menus- something that people really do forget, but is worth speaking about, and, as you made it out, it is a very important part of the effects. I loved this game on my gamecube as well.

Ya see, most of all the games that Play were made before 2007. and my favorite console is the Gamecube, or really, Wii, why?

Gamecube has all my favorite retro collections, (Sonic Gems, Sonic Megacollection, Namco Museum, Zelda Collector's addition) Then the GC makes the graphic clear and brighter, a really neat emulator like effect. BUT, if you put in into your Wii, you 2x res or something like that, so the Wii can make Sonic the Fighters, Majora's mask, Sonic and Knuckles all look great.

First off, let's look at Sonic 1,

Sonic 1 is the very first game that I remember playing- I always died at act two. those platforms that were moving up and down were realy to much for an 8 year old on an outdated system whilst everyone else was playing the Mario Kart 64. (Or crying over Sonic R).

Sonic 1, I did actually really like these graphic, they just felt. . . .deeper, more serene, and a lot better to me than Sonic 2. Maybe that's just because I played Sonic 1 first. I dunno, but anyways, I really liked the colors used, not to bright, not to drab.

The gameplya is like most all sonic games, even the modern titles having their roots in it.

I also enjoyed the music in this game again, yes, like it more than sonic 2 for some reason, I think that it's because Soinc 2's music just became. . . . sharper, and more bouncy/ weird. I do like some of the remixed Sonic 2 themes, but not as much as Sonic 1.

Starlight Zone Is not only an example of one of my favorite zones for good level design, but is also a great example of electronic soft music. I love it.

Sonic 1 is about gameplay, kinda like Megaman 1, but Sonic 1 didn't have that much of a story, though it was an interesting setting.

Sonic 2 bumped it up, with adding that lovable Fox, named Tails! (And yes, I am so glad that we did not get the turtle named booster!) Silver Soinc, and actually neat character in the comic, and it added the Death Egg, a bit better of a plot point, and one that would be used again.

Sonic 3 is one of my favorites. They Gave Sonic that cool flash shield, and other abilities that came with pending shields, hooray for their return in Sonic Generations! Knuckles is a playable character, who has his own moves now, as is Tails, though you could play as him in Sonic 2. Tails can fly, a fun ability to use in level and try to find those giant rings.

Sonic 3, and Sonic and Knuckles greatly increased the story, introducing the master emerald, Mecha Sonic, and reusing the Death Egg, only the end of the game is a lot more epic. Knuckles has his own part to the story, which was kinda neat to see, I like how they pit him against. Mecha Sonic.

Oh, and the music! I love the Music in Sonic 3 and Knuckles! But. . . . I am out of time, and will have to finish this later!

Sword legion : Your right I probably should have talked about the gameplay more but I figured I shouldn't let this get too long and that most people know about the older games but I do see your point as stated and I'll make sure to cover that next time a do a collection game like this.

The subject about games, most of my favorite ones did come out before 2007 and afterwards is when most games started losing creativity to me (mostly for system I didn't have at the time PS3). I love the Gamecube and I like the Wii because of the backwards compatibility  with the GC so that way if your Gamecube breaks you have an alternative but even now I still miss my original Silver Gamecube, just the feeling of setting it up, it's shape and everything it felt great to play on. (Plus I love the controllers)

Yeah there are alot of collection games I enjoy as well ^-^ they had many collection series or just bundle's of games that you could buy and it really felt like you were reaching back into the past

I couldn't agree with you any more about the Sonic 1 - Knuckles games as I do enjoy the look of Sonic The Hedgehog 1 compared to the second one as like you said it had alot more depth and it seemed like their was a hidden meaning behind each level to me the first time I played it (12 years old). The second one was a little too bright for my taste but still very interesting an fun to look at and the third and 4th mixed the two of them together making for a depth filled game with a bright tone as well.

Either way glad you like the review

Yeah, It's weird, how me and certain others, just. . . don't enjoy Sonic 2 so much over little things! I guess that it's important for Game designers to understand what their fans loved about the first game if they're going to make a second!

Sonic CD, I didn't even like until I played the emulated version, and heard the JP soundtrack + the graphics where nice pixel emulated, and slightly brighter colors that go with it.

I played Vectorman the other night, so I think that means that you are doing a good job writing these reviews, I've thought about doing it myself, and probably could, it's just that I don't really have time.

I believe I left off at Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

Mushroom hill.

I love how the colors, and seasons change here, it's just such a fun and cool zone.

I only wish that I enjoyed Sandapolis zone more, and flying battery, but hey, flying battery wasn't that bad, not bad at all actually, nice music.

Sanapolis was long, and somehow felt out of place.

Lava reef was pretty neat. Nice music here as well.

Sky sanctuary was just plain awesome, in like, every aspect, fighting Mecha Sonic, chasing the Deth Egg, all those Egg robo sentries, just awesome. Love how they redid it in Sonic Generations, now, if only we had Ice cap Zone from Sonic 3 in that game.

Sonic 3D blast was pretty neat for a retro, 3D sonic game- but it get's bland, what with levels that drag out forever, with more traps than enemies, in fact, only about 15 each level I think.

Still the gold shield and the homing attack was neat. And some of the music was top notch for sonic. Diamond Dust was FANTASTIC! as was that lava area, and puppet panic- but it doesn't quite make up for all the lack of. . . well. . . action packed fast paced fun that we are used too from sonic games. In fact, although I find Super Sonic OP, and kinda unnecessary in most Sonic games, I actually would have really liked him in this one!

Overall, I find the game quite a regrettable choice on Sega's end. Still, there is a wonderful hack on this site:

https://www.vizzed.com/play/sonic-3d-no-flickies-gen-online-sega-genesis-32243-game

That fixes a LOT of problems, except, now it's a bit too easy!

Sonic spinball is one of the first games that I played, and it doesn't really come across as anything close to Sonic 1, in music, colors, graphics, anything.

Actually, I think that Sega was giving weight to the Archie comics- which explains the graphics style and just overall atmosphere to the game.

Rotor, and Princess Sally appear in one of the mini games in this weird Sonic Title. It was done in an attempt to introduce these American Characters to the Japanese audience.

But. I don't like a lot of it, in fact, the early archie comics, I only read, because they
are so bad that they're good!

Music, not really, not to bad, different, better than Sonic 2, kinda heavy, ESPECIALLY the options menu, really trying to appeal the the 90s arcader here.

Graphics - dark, and more toward the punk 90s arcader.

Atmosphere - see graphics.

And that's pretty much the whole game, the gameplay is fun, being pinball, and the game feels more involving than other pinball sonic mini games, but I think that I enjoy the Nights Pinball game found in Sonic Adventure. Still, this wasn't bad, but not really my taste. Oh yeah, can't forget Rexxon. XD

And that leaves. . . .

These stranger games.

Mean Bean machine, is for sonikku, not me as much, I did have fun with this game, but the Dr. Robotnik used here, is much to similar to Archie's Julian Robotnik, of whom's design I also dislike- still very funny though. I did enjoy this game enough to try it a few times, I guess, that like tetris, though I don't like to think of myself as enjoying such a game, I actually did! Didn't get addicted to it, but it was fairly fun.

Flicky is just plain fun, I love the game for it's simple formula, the attacking and running, as well as going for an awesome high score!

I actually played this game quite a bit!

Ristar. . .

Now, this, like Vectorman, was an amazing genesis title got didn't really get the series that it deserved.

The environments are one of the the major factors of this game. Each planet is done pretty well. I love the scene that has has Ristar traveling through space from one planet through space to the next. The story is MUCH more interesting in the japanese version for a few reasons:

1 Ristar's dad doesn't exist, instead, there is a character known as the star queen, who grants people wishes. When the planet Flora falls under attack, the elder sends up a prayer before getting brainwashed, and Ristar's mom sends down one of her stars to grant the wish of saving the galaxy!

2 At the end of the game, rather than seeing Ristar and his dad reunite, instead we see Greedy looking of into place as if he is planning what he will do next!

Certainly leaving room for a sequal!

The developer of Ristar said that he even got as far as designing a rival for ristar, but that a seqaul was never made on account of factors.

Ristar also, stared out as a game called, Feel:

And it was going to be a little bit different.

But to actually talk about the game, it really did curiosate me. All kinds of detail was put in it, and it was a materpeice. The music was good and fitting, though not 100% what I would listen too all the time. My favorite song being from level one. This game really does yell 90s, but that's not too bad.

Also, I love the codes that you can use, it made the game more fun for me because, well, like a lot of older games, you can't save, so, level select for the win.

The Japanese version had better codes though!

Sometimes though, it does feel like Sega just dropped the little guy though. . . when he should have had more. . .

But, oh well.

But Here, this is a great remix on Sonic 1 that keeps the nostalgia flowing.

Good job writing that out Sonic, I always enjoy a lenghty talk about stuff like this, I just wish that there more "gamer talk" like this on Vizzed.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

Wow. What was that. That was an amazing review for a quite good game. You're really talented with reviewing, just not with summoning. Lol
