Well, there's no real reason not to use grass pokemon. In my mind they're a little weak though, takes me longer to win with them than with fire or water.

nope, chikorita's just a little harder to win with. the first gym is a guy that uses flying types so it's hard to get past that part for one thing.

Yeah I can see what you mean. Hoppips only good attack is Mega Drain and it doesn't learn that attack until like Lv 40. The only good grass pokemon in the game is the starter Chikorita.

I think you have a point there. a lot of the grass types in crystal are from red and blue and some of them are good though.
