Batter up people major league baseball is back in this game. In this review I will be critiquing MLB 2001 for the Sony Play Station.

Story: 5
Like most sports game MLB 2001 does not have a solid plot like action style games. On the other hand, the plot in this game is to build a championship team and win the world series with them. The main goal is to build the championship team via trades or creating players. But there is no villains to stop in this game like Mega Man or Mario games. That is why I do not give the plot a solid score. The goal being to build a championship team counts for something, which is why I did not give the story a low score. It is really hard for me to rate the plot on this game simply because it is a sports game. At the end of the day I give the plot a middle rating of 5.

Graphics & Controls: 9
The graphics in MLB 2001 are very good. The graphics are better than its precursor MLB 2000. The stadiums look how they are supposed to look in real life. The people in the stands look like real people. The previous MLB Game they looked a little fuzzy, so I was glad to see that cleaned up in this game. I really like how the graphics reflect the new stadiums that were featured in this game. Some of the new Stadiums were Safeco Field, Minute Maid Park, and AT&T park.  Also, what was a nice touch was the clouds and sky color in this game. It reminded me of seeing ballgames on TV and watching clouds move in.

The controls in this game were very good as well. The batters' swings as nicely done in this game. The pitchers' sprites are real good in this game as well. The only thing in this game is some of the bulky ball players in this game seem to lag when they are running the bases. I want to think the makers of this game had them appear sluggish because that is how they are in real life. On the other hand, part of me thinks they did not pay attention to the fact other players are slower. So that kind of bumps the rating down slightly. I still think the graphics & controls in this game are very solid as a result I give it a 9/10.

Sound: 10
The sound in this game was awesome! The commentary of legendary Vin Scully sounds like him in real life. The other person doing commentary is former ESPN analysis Dave Campbell. Both sound like they do in real life. The sound in this game that really bumps up the road is the cracking sound when a home run is hit. The cracking sound, sounds like a real life home run being hit. It lets the player know they have hit a home run. MLB 2000, I do not remember having that clear sound to it. The background sounds are a nice touch as well. Another thing is the announcer in this game, makes announcements you would expect to hear in a real stadium. I think the makers of this game did a real good job with the sounds in this game. Now there are some funny sounds in this game as well. One of the more funny sounds in this game is when players collide, it literally sounds like they are moaning. Also when batters strike out it sounds like they are saying arrrgggh. Overall the sound in this game was very well done as a result I give it a perfect score of 10/10.

Addictiveness & Depth: 9
The replay value in this game is very high. It is fun to play in the new stadiums that were in this game. It is also fun to try to win with different teams, especially if you have more than one favorite team. What I also like is there are more side games in this game than there was in the last MLB game. I really enjoy playing this game, it is a fun game and has a lot to offer.

This game really improved over its precursor concerning depth. There are more side games to play in MLB 2001. First of all, the players can play a regular 162 game season. Players can also play spring training games as well. In addition, there are other things in this game. Players can do an actual draft to try to get players to build a team with. Something that was added to this game and was a staple in future games in this series was the franchise mode. The franchise mode allows players to build a franchise from the scratch by selecting a team and then adding players. I really like how they added more stuff in this game compared to the previous MLB games. It is a sports game so there are no items to collect like you would see in a Mega Man game. At the end of the day I give the replay and depth in this game a soldi 9/10.

Difficulty: 6
Okay, I had a hard time rating this game's difficulty for a few reasons. First, as I mentioned there are no enemies in this game, so enemy placement is not a factor. Second, there are no stages to complete in this game nor is there fortress stages or anything like that. Third, there is no final boss battle in this game. But this is a sports game so it is not supposed to have these things in it. However, the difficulty in this game depends on what team the player picks and what game the players chose.

Certain teams are harder to win with due to this being based on season stats. If a player chooses a team that did not have good stats than that teams players are harder to win with. Also the franchise and draft type games are hard to master because you are going against the computer in the draft as well as picking players. If you chose the franchise or draft mode you have to wait till it is your round to make your pick. Another thing, that can make this game somewhat difficulty is you have to get used to the controls. The CPU in this game will try to strike you out, get your batters to strike out, so it takes some time to learn the tricks in this game. Moreover, errors in this game are random and the game just loves to have your team commit errors at the worst time. Thus, this game does have some difficulty in it, but it is not like a Mega Man or Mario game. I give the difficulty in this game a moderate score of 6/10.

Overall: 9.2
MLB 2001 came out in 2000 I believe, so the stats were based on the 1999 season. This game rocked it came out when the play station was about to peak. MLB 2001 was such a huge improvement from earlier MLB games. The graphics, sound, and depth all improved in this game. I will be honest, this was my favorite play station sports game till MLB 2002 and 2003 came out. Still, I enjoy playing this game there is a lot to offer in this game. I remember getting this game and I was so excited to get it. I could not wait to get home from school, do my homework so I could play this game. That is how awesome I thought this game was. So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. I give it a 9.2 overall.

Yes, this is a very nice review. Actually, one of the bests ones I have seen. I really like how you went into detail about each thing, and also your wording is impeccable. I don't really play sport games, but with this review I am actually wanting to play this game.
