I got 1.7.4 on the Mac and it runs gba games just fine for the most part. The only thing is it WILL NOT use cheats and WILL NOT play gbc games. I have watched several youtube videos and followed step for step and even redownloaded the program a few times. Still no gbc. Any advice?

That is strange... well if you can't get it working one option would be to get VMWare Fusion which basically is an application where you can run windows programs on a Mac. I'm not sure what the problem is, if you saw other people on youtube using it on a mac then I'm sure they know the exact problem.

I did a CRC comparison on the dmg file and it's exactly the same as the one on http://www.get-your-rom.com/ just inside an archive.

So it's not our file that's the problem. You know, I dont see anything on VBAs site about this 1.7.4 Mac emulator, only their 1.7.2 one, which leads me to think this one was a beta?

So does that mean I need 1.7.2? I found that when I have my video at 1 or 2x it will play gbc games but they are cut off at half and have a very dark purple hue.

I'm having the exact same problem with my Fire Red game on my Macbook!
I posted my own thread regarding my exact problem though....
Basically I am trying to use a cheat that enables me to capture any pokemon (or rather make whatever pokemon I want to appear) and NOTHING WORKS. I have tried EVERY frigging combination of cheats and methods of entering them that I know how. For the love of all that is holy and good is there any hope for us mac users?!
