Something like this was the first thing we had which stayed long enough that it can still be found in the "grannys closet".

First game I recall playing was either Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario Kart on the SNES. Though I grew up mainly with Sega Genesis (still have fond memories of playing the Sonic the Hedgehog games with my brothers). My favorite childhood game however is Mega Man X; it was such a good game that I ended up playing through the rest of the Mega Man X series years later via emulators (the only ones I played growing up were X and X4); I stopped at X6 though because once the series ventured into the 3D realm I lost interest.

I'm no longer the game enthusiast I was when I was a kid - in fact I no longer own a console at all; I do all of my gaming on a lower-end PC (mainly early 2000s PC games like Command & Conquer Generals - another one which has a lot of nostalgic value to me and which I've wasted countless fun hours on over the years; it still has an active online community via Gameranger).

Every now and then I get an urge to relive some classic games from my childhood, which is why I'm here. I was also hoping to find an active online multiplayer community here just to get a break from playing C&C.

cigsvon :

My boys are just shy of three years old now.  I've been trying to get them started with some of the old NES stuff and a couple of old Gameboys, but I don't think they're quite ready to start playing things right (They tend to just hit the select or start buttons just because those things change the picture on the screen, its pretty hit and miss to get them to do more than that.  I'm hopeful that they start to get a little better soon.  I'm looking forwards to handing them each an xbox 360 controller and playing Minecraft with them once they stop being such a hindrance to play.

Oh, my goodness. Asking me to into the way back machine.

My very first system was the NES (we had a Genesis at the time, too, but I didn't really get into that business until muuuch later), and I believe at least one of my first games was Super Mario Bros. We didn't have much for it at the time, and it was so long ago, so I can't accurately say.

I got my first NES when I was about 6. It was totally random in that it was not for Christmas or my birthday or anyone elses birthday. My parents just bought it. It had Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt and that track game with that pad that hardly ever worked. I loved playing Duck Hunt on there with that fake plastic gun, lol! Mom and I watched each other play Super Mario together.

Talk about going way back into the past. I used to do a lot of table top ( pen and paper gaming ) back in the day. You know playing stuff like Dungeons & Dragons, Rift, Shadowrun, Battletech, and some others. I got introduced to gaming by a friend of mine in the groups I gamed with. He had a couple of text based dungeon crawlers that I got into and played often when we were done with our sessions. After that I got pong when it first came out on console. Then the Atari 2600 ( with games like : Dragonstomper, Swordquest, Crypts of Chaos, etc ... ) and just kept going up from there. I have owned a majority of the game systems that have come out and still do own quite a few ( meaning they still work ). Like Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis ( CD & 32X also ), my first PC with a lot of DOS games ( had windows 95 I think on it ), also have PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP. All my systems I bought except for the 2 Atari's I have ( both of those were gifts from my family ). Lot of games I could list as I progressed that just fueled the flames for my gaming addiction but I keep it to the main few that really hooked me : Final Fantasy series, Wizardry series, Dragon Warrior series, Ultima series, Mechwarrior series, Myst series, Zork, and the point and click Monkey Island games.

So, yeah. Time to tell you other Geezers about my introduction to video games.

Between June 13 1992 and December 31 1993, my 3yr/4yr old self held an NES controller and played Super Mario Bros. 3 for the first time.
Basically I was a (very) young newcomer to video games.
When I first played Super Mario Bros. 3, I got a "TIME UP!" on World 1-1. After that, I got more and more video games, and got better with age.
Man, this thread is like looking into the past, and I'm glad that I participated in it!

GateKeeper_A : I first started playing video games back in 1982 when I was 12 years old on a vic20 computer that my parents had bought the first game I played was a car racing game called road race using a keyboard then a year later I received an ATARI 2600 as a CHRISTMAS gift it had 2 joysticks and 6 games they were yar,s revenge battlezone combat seaquest stampede and freeway then in 1986 I received a NINTENDO with 2 game controllers zapper gun and 1 game it was hogan,s alley. I have been a video game collector since 1982 although I had to sell my ATARI about 25 years ago before it was sold I managed to build my ATARI game collection up to 127 games which I bought from garage sales flea markets and various stores. in 1986 I had 3 paper routes and used to buy a new NINTENDO game every 2 weeks with my paper route money. I still have my vic20 although my original one was stolen back in 1988 I managed to replace it a couple of years later. I have 60 games for it both on cartridges and cassettes one cartridge is a 2 in one that is still in it,s original box with the instructions. along with my vic20 games I also have a 8k ram expansion cartridge and 2 program books. I also have a saga game gear with 19 games and 121 games for my NINTENDO that I have collected since 1986 including a 15 in one cartridge in it,s original case with the instruction book as well as a 31 in one cartridge most of my NINTENDO games are complete and are in their original boxes as well as I also have a game genie with the code book that is also like new. and I have 2 sets of games that I sometimes play off line that run on emulators one has 326 NINTENDO 64 games on six disks and the other is one disk with 327 ATARI games both of them I received from my cousin . and I also own 4 tabletop games 3 are in their original boxes and the other just has the original instruction book.

The first video game I ever saw was a Space Invaders arcade cabinet. I played it then, got hooked on games and apparently doomed my life lol.  The first system I owned was a NES. I was a small little guy when the ATARI heyday was around, but I lived in the boonies and there was no such gadgetry there. I played the crap out of that NES, beating rough games like Battletoads. I miss the two player games, no internet needed. Fun times.

Although I played games on my father's old computer - Tetris!! - what got me into gaming was Super Mario 3. The graphics were much clearer than in Super Mario 1 and the music was completely addicting. I could literally sit down and watch others play so I could enjoy the music.
