So the idea of this thread came along when I had this awesome brainwave. You know people say that it has scientifically been proved that if you dream you fall of the edge of the cliff and you see yourself hit the bottom - you instantly die in real life, what if you were being unplugged and you didn't know it! What if that was you being randomly released out of the pods... 

When it comes to understanding the nature of our universe, we really don't know. It's often compared to a fish in a fishbowl being driven around in a car. Say the fish was brilliant and understood the science and math of the universe around it. Would it know that the objects past the fish bowl were real? The implication is that our concept of reality is subjectively based on our observation and reason.

Also, we could all be in the Matrix and not know it. But would the knowledge of living in the Matrix change anything about our lives? I argue that it wouldn't. We ignore these types of hypotheses in day to day science because they're inconsequential and it's impossible to obtain evidence for/against them. There's simply no reason to overcomplicate our current knowledge of the universe by debating over this possibility.

So, basically (in other words) it's possible, which may be scary to think about. But at the same the knowledge of it being reality wouldn't affect our lives in any meaningful way, and there's no way to prove or disprove that this is the case, so it's best just to go with the simplest answer, that we're not in the Matrix.

Could not be any less scientific. Utter hogwash. Never ever at any point in time has that even been remotely been believed by the scientific community.

I am at this moment (of typing) watching an episode of Doctor Who during which The Doctor lay down and had an apparatus attached to his head which transported his mind to a computer generated simulated virtual reality called "The Matrix" while other time-lords looked after his physical body in the real world
While The Doctor is in The Matrix, things seem very real to him and hurt him
Also, if he should die in The Matrix, then he would die in the real world too
Advanced and experienced users of The Matrix are able to bend and sometimes break the laws of reality within the virtual reality of The Matrix

That would be really scarey if that was the case. I'm glad that I don't die in any of my nightmares or at least that's what I think.

I feel the matrix is more a metaphor for life. People who feel they are in control but in reality, are ants in a great chain.
Equally the question of are we even here, where is here, what's our purpose.
Or the idea that in the end, man's greatest achievement is our greatest mistake (creating A.I.).
These are all questions and issues that are all too alive today.
In that respect, sure, we are in the matrix.
Ignorance is bliss.

There is no way the Matrix is real. I don't see a bunch of being changing into people with suits trying to kill me.
