The best way to win the game is to try and take the turns on the inner part of the track, and if you get an item that's OP (say star) you cannot wait until  you get up ahead to use it (Except for lightning) because it will count your track position and make it last shorter, but it will NOT make it last longer if you lose spots. You mainly want to keep that one green shell because if you get attacked at the end of a race all of the other shells can AND WILL catch up to you making you lose the race (unless if your in 50 CC).

fireork12 : Very good basic summary, but for beginners only. Once people get used to the basics, the next step is required: the Powerslide technique is a MUST to stay ahead a lot of times on curves, assuming you don't have any weapon or don't want to use it yet, at 100 and 150 cc.
