I'll lay aside all controversy about cloning that would be related to this, and simply say: it would be awesome to bring back some extinct animals.

If it can be done safely to the animal and the people doing it, it would be a great opportunity to explore some of the older creatures and how they really looked and acted, and may help give us some insight into the animal kingdom of long ago.

I don't think many of them should be re-introduced into nature, because, as many have said, they are gone for a reason. Whether you believe that reason is natural selection or divine intervention, I think it's best we respect what has happened.

Other animals, the one humans have killed off recently, I think would be great to have back into the wild. Though I think all the money spent cloning and re-introducing them might go to waste: if humans have killed them all of once, they can do it again.

Besides the fact that it may not be possible lets just think about it at a practical what if point of view.

What if Scientist did bring back extinct animals?

Well first of all would they be in zoos and exhibits where people would be able to watch them interact with a man made environment? Or would they be put back into the environment?

If they were put back into the environment it would not end well. From what I can see either one of two points (or both actually) would happen.
1) The ecosystems would be completely disrupted causing a total collapse and the extinction of at least one major species which would then have deadlier effects in humans in the long run.

2) The extinct animal would not be able to adapt to the new environment and just become extinct again.

I mean after all as Light knight said they're extinct for a purpose. What would be the point in bringing them back unless they're just for show? But even that cant be healthy and there are still some limits as to what you could actually observe. I doubt anyone no matter how good of a scientist can perfectly recreate any time in the past. They can come close don't get me wrong I'm sure they can come close but as to perfectly matching it to every single detail it would be impossible.

I think that it might be interesting if extinct animals were brought back to life, but maybe not the best idea. The reason those animals are extinct is because they couldn't survive in the wild, so they would probably end up just being put in zoos and examined in labs.

Most certainly not! They went extinct for a reason! Bringing them to the modern world would cause imbalance in the food chain and many other things. To cut a long story short - chaos.

Seems impossible. I don't think humans can bring back extinct animal like wolly mammoth or platypus.

Only one. I think that they should do this so that they can study them, but they need to be careful and not let it get out or let anyone else get the DNA.

Bringing back extinct animals is an amazing feat that should definitely be done by scientists. There's all sorts of animals that human activity has driven extinct and if we even have a chance at bringing a few back then we should do so. The sooner scientists perfect the technology necessary to bring back extinct animals, the easier it will be to repopulate animals that are near extinction from hunting and other human activities.

I have a Biology degree so here is my take on this. It is possible they could do that Yes. But I do not think that should. Bringing them back could  mess up the ecosystem that they were once in. I also think it is playing God and if they can bring that back what will be next. Instead of trying to bring back extinct creatures we should be focusing on our attention on preventing extinctions. Another animal that needs to be saving is the Tiger. Right now they are under 5000 Tigers in the world and if we do not do something to save them. I hate to say it but the Tiger could be our next animal to go extinct. We can prevent this and that should be our focus is saving the present animals from extinction.

That... wouldn't really work. In current conditions, they couldn't possibly survive. it's possible, but not worth it. Also, if they do manage to survive, there would be widespread panic among the human population.

mariowin13 :  Just so you know the platypus is not extinct or even endangered or threatened.

As for the thread I think it would be freakin awesome to see some extinct species, as to whether we should or not?  I think there would be a lot of unforeseen repercussions that might make it too dangerous.

Honestly no... I don't think they should bring back these animals. You need to think about thinks like the climate and evoloution. Things have changed a lot and all those animals became extinct for a reason. It would also be cruel to bring back animals that would eventually die out again anyways seeing as most of these animals became extinct for a reason. I really think it will  be a bad idea if scientists decide to give this a go around it could cause a major disaster or the dna can easily get into the wrong hands if not careful.

Even though it can be quite cool, I think it's a bad idea. I mean, they could destroy the whole world or something. Plus they don't have much DNA for it. So I think it's a bad idea.

No, they should not bring back these animals because they would need to adapt and if one got loose it could effect the food chain greatly.
