Ah, when I was A kid, Only few things ever mattered to me, And these things were Saturday morning cartoons, and a big bowl of cereal. Both those 2 things combined. And My favorite cartoon to watch on mornings was Wacky races, a cartoon where a bunch of different racers race each other through various parts of the world. The show was so popular, It even got a Nintendo game! But one question, will this game be a hit, or will It be a flat tire? Let's see.
Story-7/10 The main plot behind this game is that The show's main villain has sent His sidekick on 3 a mission to travel around the world and prevent all of the racers from succeeding, So his sidekick's name is muttley, He is some sort of dog with an unknown breed. But anyways, It is up to you to help Muttley and Dick dastardly succeed in their plan.
Gameplay-7/10 Like usual, Wacky races for the NES is a platformer, You control muttley through more then 4 big levels in an attempt to stop the other racers and obey His master's commands, now please be aware, Despite the name of this game being Wacky races, It is not a racing game, Instead It is a platform game like I said. But anyways, muttley is armed with a bunch of moves at his disposal, such as a power bite, explosive bombs, etc. Along the way, you will be fighting off a bunch of enemies, they are all area-specific though, for example, The garden level will have you fighting off bunnies, and flowers with shades, The castle level will have you fighting off knights, and so on. The controls are simple enough, Control pad lets you move, A is jump, B is attack, And Select is cycle through powers.
Graphics-8/10 I will be honest, this is a licensed game, And I think the developers of this game (Atlus) did a very nice job bringing the Wacky races universe into the 8-bit world! As expected, The graphics are big, colorful, and bursting with atmosphere, It is everything that you would expect from a cartoon game like this! As for the characters, they are easily recognizable and I think they look exactly like their TV counterparts. The HUD is pretty self explanatory, It shows your lives, your amount of health, and everything else.
Sound-7/10 The soundtrack in this game is believe it or not, really good! Except for one thing, they completely forgot the Wacky races theme song that has been in our heads for years and years to come! But besides that, The actual soundtrack is pretty good, all of the songs you'll be listening to seem to fit the moods of the levels very nicely, mostly the garden level and the castle level. As for the sound effects, They are your typical stuff, You have your booms, pows, bangs, etc. Anyways that is pretty much it for the sound!
Addictiveness-6/10 Is this a game that I am ever going to play again? Of course! It was really fun and I have also beaten It multiple times as a little kid. I do not see any reason to hate the game besides the fact that It can get flipping hard at certain points, but other then that, There is nothing else to complain about.
Depth-5/10 Ok, here is one of the game's weak points, the replay value, once you finally get done with this game, There is really not that much to do after you beat it. Well actually, the game is about 5-10 levels long, so It will most likely take you about an hour to finish this whole game.
Difficulty-7/10 This is one of the game's high points, the difficulty level, well actually, I'm kidding about that! The game is not really that hard but It can still give you alot of trouble at certain points, like...THE SLAG BROTHERS, I hated them! But I managed to get through the end of the game with about 26 extra lives left, so now worries.
Overall-7.7/10 So in general, If you want a good licensed game for the NES, look no further then this one, It's fun, challenging, and offers alot for you to do! I gave this game a 7.7 because of those reasons. Now this has been RedHotToddy, And I am signing off! See you guys in my next review! If there is one.
