Final fantasy 7 was the first final fantasy game that got in the 3d world of gaming ( final fantasy 6 is still a 2d game for people i saw who called the main protagonist of that game a 3d character) and was also the game that innovated the rpg genre. But to be completely honest, i think this game to be very overrated. I mean sure it brought a innovation to the rpg genre and it probably has a huge nostalgia factor to rpg and especially final fantasy fans, but (its said before and i say it again) innovation and nostalgia are not everything for what a good game should have. But does the fact that i think a game to be overrated say i hate a game? Of course not, but do i like this game? I promised in my last review that i would review this game, and i will do that now.
graphics: 6 the graphics for the characters seem kind of lazy (at least in my opinion). Sure this game was made in the late 90's when 3d graphics where still rare, but that does not excuse how blocky the characters are (especially during the game play). The characters are more blocky than in the first n64 game (Mario 64), and i accuarly hate that game. The main reason i still give the graphics a higher rating than a 5 is because the backgrounds still look pretty nice and the cut scenes are very well made for the time. But that's about it
sound: 6 the sound in this game is decent, but still far from perfect. The music is quite un memorable to me and not really a gem to listen either. The only music track i really care for in this game being the enemy encounter theme. And the sound is just meh. Lets just move on.
addictiveness: 8 in the game play category i see why people really like this game. Hack, i even saw some people on you tube saying they still enjoyed this game, even thought they really hated both cloud (the main protagonist) and sephiroth (the main antagonist for a part). However the battles are pretty fun to play through and some bosses are pretty fun as well. It is not really to me like what a sonic game is (believe me when i say that pretty much no game feels like that to me), but i still see why people love it. I know exactly what you are thinking right now, if you see why people love the game play so much then why are you rating this game only an 8 out of 10? Well first of i said i understand the love behind it, and not that i feel the same way. And secondly, the only reason why i would play the game again a lot is to beat the story. Plus i am more of a platformer gamer than a rpg gamer (even thought i still hate Mario) so that is why.
story: 6 what!? Only a 6 out of 10 for the story?! Are you crazy or something?! The story of this game is amazing?! (mad fan boy / girl reaction). Well the point is that i think the story to be quite confusing and i don't know what's happening most of the time. For example: remember the infamous villain switch in the subspace emissary from super smash bros brawl? Well this game is quite similar with that. In the beginning of the game, the main villain is the president of shinra inc, later on they change their minds and decide to go with sephiroth, then they decide to go with jenova, and eventually they decide to go with sephiroth again. I mean wtf, its like they referenced this in brawl or something. Overall the story is very confusing in my opinion and is really weird at times.
depth: 5 yeah there is not much to do in this game other than completing the story just like in final fantasy 5 (which is the only other game in the series i've played). Maybe there are a view extras, but its still on the shallow side.
difficulty: 7 this game is not very hard. Hack, some battles are even impossible to lose such as the monster battle with cloud and sephiroth, and the battle between sephiroth and cloud only (like the autarch said). I was originally going to rate this lower in difficulty, but there are still some annoying bosses which forced me to rate it higher such as the elevator boss.
overall i think this game to be pretty enjoyable, but i feel its a bit overrated. Hack, the lowest rating given to this game by an other reviewer on this site is an 8,4. But i give it an 7,1 : its a decent game that gets too much attention
