The hardest game I've ever played, I would say Beowolf, for the Xbox360, because its maps were confusing at times and very hard to navigate threw and because the controls(during boss battles) were very complex and hard to execute the maneuvers necessary to beat the bosses.

I have to go with "Night Shade" for the N.E.S.
Without the Save States in this place? That game will drive anyone over the edge. Check out "JonTron" if you want a good scoop of info on that.
For Genisis? "Contra Hard corps".
For S.N.E.S? "Flash Back" Springs to mind. (Been years. only rented it once from Blockbuster.)
Most of the games for "S.N.E.S." can be played and completed with a little brain juice and a little extra time.

There are many games that are harder but I do not include incomplete messes that are amped up and have cheap difficulty to make up for lack of content. I hate to say it but if after the an hour passes in any point and zero progress is made? I start to reconsider the game and move on.
I made it to the Stair Climb in "GhostBusters for the N.E.S." about 10 or twenty times, Died, Walked away, never looked back, and was forever happy with the phrase "made it to the stair climb".
Similar thing for "Back to the Future for N.E.S." Only I made it to "the Car Driving Section" once. Got Killed or Failed, returned the game to the rental store, and never looked back.

For those Cases I recommend only getting involved with it for a pure challenge and Bragging rights over the former generations. Or To Preview what made a gamer back in the day.
The ones that could be completed from those generations without too much trouble were the Arcade Coin-ops. Course you hit continue like a dozen times. Even with the best skill in some cases. (Till Street Fighter 2 Came out.)

Another that is Really difficult to Complete is "the First Gauntlet Game". 255 Levels.
Look em up. I am not kidding. Loads of fun though.
Good luck.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

The hardest game I think is Crime Fighters for Mame. All the bosses are very hard to me. And then I think at the end of the game you face all the bosses at the same time. Good Grief.

The hardest game(s) I've ever played are easily Dracula's Curse (as mentioned above) and Super C. Both are on the NES. Although the Famicom version of Dracula's Curse is significantly easier to me.

The hardest game I have ever played was Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. I tried getting past Pump Works for a month and couldn't do it so I gave up and I haven't gone back to playing it since.

For me the hardest game I ever played was Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I tried it when I was 8 and just plain sucked at it. I haven't even attempted to play it sense then.

The hardest game I ever played was Final Fantasy 13-2, mostly because I hit a dead end and didn't know what to do and after hours of running around I gave up. I still haven't finished it.

the hardest game I have ever played was
street fighter 2 the world warriors,
I was 12 and I kept getting my ass handed
to me, it was that hard however I kept playing
until I've beaten the game with all the characters,
the computer in this game is so cheep especially
sagot, one of the hardest characters to beat.

Well some of the hardest games I've played to date.

Computer Game - 'I want to be the Guy I believe its called. Its a simple little side scroller game that is near impossible, I never even got close and after a couple weeks I had to throw up my hands in despair and resignation....

NES - The original Wizardry on NES.  Loved that game, died instantly every time I played it.

SNES - This is a tough one, as someone had said before most SNES games had strayed from the path of being overly difficult. However if I had to choose one it would probably be Super R-Type (I've never been good at side scrolling space shooters) or Turn and Burn No fly Zone.

Genesis - I didn't play too many Genesis games, I always felt the controls for it were a little clunky but one of the hardest ones there for me anyway was Golden Axe, again I loved the game but no matter what I always got my backside handed to me on a platter.

Intellivision - Remember this one?  My most favorite game, also the one that frustrated me the most was 'B-17 Bomber'  I played it for hours and got precisely nowhere.

Those are the ones that come to mind right off the top of my head though I'm sure there are more once I sit down and think it through a bit more.  oh yes one more....

PSOne - Kings Field 2,  that game....  Awesome game, hours of fun... got nowhere and died a lot.

Ok there I think I'm good now, for the time being anyway.  Nice thread I like it.

SuperCrash64 : The hardest game I've played? Kaizo Mario. Hardest hack ever. It's a hack of Super Mario Wrodl, and I'll say this; I'd like to see someone beat it without save states.

To be fairly honest, Mario Kart 64 was a close second. It has slippery controls, a bad drifting mechanism, and Yoshi Valley on 100 Cc is only reserved for the best Mario Kart players. The AI just LOVES to cheat.
